• If you find brushing your teeth to be tedious, you might want to check out the Blizzident. The makers of this new product use a 3D scan of your teeth to create a custom toothbrush that looks like a mouthpiece lined with bristles. Supposedly, all you have to do is insert the Blizzident in your mouth, bite down and release 10 times, and -- voila! -- clean teeth in 6 seconds. Be prepared to pay for the convenience, though; a Blizzident of your very own will set you back $299. The toothbrush will last for a year, though, and replacement bristles are $89.

A Long Winter’s Nap By Craig W. Armstrong

Good hunters know their quarry and that includes their sleeping habits. Hibernation is something many animals do, but why do they do it and how does it work? In the simplest terms, animals hibernate at certain times of the year when their food sources are limited. Instead of starving, these creatures put themselves in a kind of suspended animation. In most cases, hibernation consists of a lowering of the heart rate and body temperature, and in some cases, the stopping of waste excretion. When most people think of hibernation, they think of bears. However, the true definition of hibernation involves a sleep so deep it takes time to recover from it. That is not the case for bears. They can be easily awakened from hibernation. Another way bears differ lies in their body temperature. The benefit of hibernation is not to catch up on sleep but to lower body temperature. Some animals lower their body temperature by more than 60 degrees. In the case of bears, their body temperature drops only slightly. While they might get credit for being the kings of hibernation, they really are not. Not all hibernation takes place in the winter and not all hibernation lasts for a long period of time. Some animals hibernate in the summer. This is known as estivation. When reptiles hibernate, it is called brumation. A short-term form of hibernation is called torpor. This can take place daily for short periods of time and occurs mainly in birds and certain types of bats. So, how is sleep different from hibernation? Sleep encompasses a mental change, resulting in changes in brain activity. Your heart rate and body temperature might drop during sleep, but only slightly. In the case of hibernation, it is believed that brain activity stays basically the same as when the animal is awake. That is why when an animal awakes from hibernation in many cases, they suffer from a sleep-deprived state and may take days to recover and truly wake up. Hibernation takes a big physiological toll. Maybe that’s why humans don’t do it. Take the chipmunk, for example. They can go from a heart rate of 200 beats a minute to five beats per minute. In some animals, breathing rates can drop by as much as 50 percent and 100 percent in others. Some reptiles stop breathing entirely during hibernation. Human hibernation has not yet been perfected, but it could prove valuable. Injured or ill people could be put in hibernation until medical assistance could be rendered. Hibernation could also be used for extended space travel. Hibernation is just one more fascinating part of the animal kingdom. Knowing why and how animals hibernate can help hunters understand their prey better and give them a greater respect for the great outdoors.

The Light's On By Tresa Erickson

You slide into your vehicle after a long day at work, eager to get home, kick off your shoes and take it easy, when you see it. One of the warning lights on your instrument panel is shining bright, indicating that all is not well with your vehicle. Ugh! The instrument panels on most vehicles consist of a variety of red and yellow lights that let drivers know when there is a problem with their vehicle. Some lights are more cause for concern than others. Here is a brief description of the warning lights you might see on your vehicle and what you should do in the event they occur. Service Engine Soon This light may also be labeled "Check Engine" and can be triggered

by any number of problems from a loose gas cap to a legitimate issue with the engine. As long as your vehicle drives fine, there is no reason for you to panic. You should have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Air Bag Readiness This light indicates there is a problem with your air bags and you need to have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Don't ignore the warning and take a chance on air bag failure in an accident. Anti-Lock or ABS This light indicates the anti-lock feature on your brakes has been disabled and you should have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Your brakes will continue to work, but if you get into a situation where you have to brake hard, the wheels could lock up. Engine Oil This light indicates the oil pressure is low and you need to have your vehicle serviced immediately. Don't ignore the warning and

October 31 - November 6, 2013 continue to drive your vehicle, or you could risk extensive damage to the engine. Low Engine Coolant This light indicates the engine coolant is low and you should address the problem right away. Shut off your vehicle, wait for the engine to cool and then check the coolant level. Add some if needed. The light may go off. If it doesn't, you should have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Engine Coolant Temperature This light indicates the temperature of the engine is beyond the safe maximum and you should have your vehicle serviced immediately. Don't ignore the warning and continue to drive your vehicle, or you could risk extensive damage to the engine. Battery Voltage This light indicates the battery is no longer being charged and you should address the problem right away. You have about 20 minutes of driving left before your vehicle shuts down completely, so you should turn off all unnecessary electrical accessories and have the battery checked. You may just need a new battery, or you could be experiencing some other problem with your electrical system. Warning lights can come on at any moment when you are driving. Take them seriously, and if you don't know what one means, consult your owner's manual and follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Of all of the warning lights, the ones monitoring the engine oil, engine coolant and battery are the most serious. You should take prompt action the moment these occur to prevent breaking down on the side of the road and damaging your vehicle.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Ablation Treatment for Atrial Fibrillation DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Two years ago, I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. For one year, things were fine, but the atrial fib returned. After five months of hell and reactions to meds, I agreed to have ablation. I was told it was 80 percent effective; I’m in the 20 percent. Now the doctors recommend a repeat ablation. I hesitate, because I have gotten worse since the first procedure. Would you recommend a second try? -- K.S. ANSWER: Atrial fibrillation is near the top of the list when it comes to heartbeat disturbances. It’s a rapid and erratic beat. The speed of the beat compromises heart pumping, and its irregularity sets the scene for a stroke. The upper heart chambers -- the atria -- are not contracting; they’re squirming. Blood stagnates in the atria and forms clots. Pieces of the clots can be swept into the circulation to the brain, where they cause a stroke. Sometimes, if a normal beat can’t be restored, slowing the fib restores adequate blood pumping, but the stroke threat remains. That’s the reason for putting people on the anticoagulant Coumadin. Catheter radiofrequency ablation is an attractive choice for restoration of a normal heartbeat. A thin, flexible tube -- a catheter -- is inserted into a groin blood vessel and carefully advanced to the heart’s left atrium, where the irregular beat originates. The catheter is equipped to emit high-frequency current that ablates

tissue responsible for fibrillation. “Ablationâ€? means “destruction.â€? One ablation treatment restores a normal beat 80 percent of the time. You fell into the 20 percent group. A second attempt achieves success 90 percent of the time. With those odds, I would jump at the chance of a second go with ablation. The odds are greatly in your favor. If a normal beat is restored, you can stop taking medicines, with their potential for side effects. You also can stop taking the anticoagulant, since the stroke threat will have gone. The booklet on heartbeat irregularities explains what happens in atrial fibrillation and its treatment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 107W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ••• DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have been active all my life. In high school, I played three varsity sports. I am now 60. My doctor told me I have a dropped uterus. Do you think all that physical activity caused it? -- B.A. ANSWER: At your age, many, many women have dropped pelvic organs -- uterus, bladder or rectum. It’s called pelvic prolapse. Genes (the go-to reason for just about everything), the number of vaginal deliveries, obesity and the normal diminished production of estrogen at menopause are some of the causes of pelvic prolapse. The most important factor is aging. I don’t believe your active life had a role in it. The pelvic organs are held in place by muscles and ligaments. With aging, those muscles and ligaments become lax, and organs drop. If the prolapse isn’t causing symptoms, no Eric Lawrence treatment is necessary. D.O. •••

October 31 - November 6, 2013 THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta

Older Faucet Still Can be Repaired

Q: The faucet on the utility sink in my basement is leaking. It’s one of those older faucets with a threaded spout where you can attach a hose, and a wingnut-looking handle. Can this be repaired, or is it too old? -- Clive in Pittsburgh A: If the leak is caused by a worn seal or washer, you should be able to find an adequate replacement in a universal washer kit. This inexpensive item is available at hardware and home-improvement stores and has a variety of different washers and seals to solve problems

October 31 - November 6, 2013

Volume 8, Week 44 exactly like yours. The type of faucet you described is likely a hose bib. These are pretty reliable and longlasting, but the washers can wear out just like any other faucet. You’ll need to disassemble the handle to get to the assembly inside. First, shut off water to the faucet at the nearest shutoff valve. This may be located under the sink, or further along the pipe-run since it’s a utility sink. Unscrew the small screw in the top of the faucet’s handle. Then pull the handle up and off. Just below the stem is the packing nut -- the large nut just underneath the handle. Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the packing nut. Next, carefully unscrew the spindle. It’s important to not scratch the spindle shaft or strip the ridges at the end of it. You can use pliers (channel-type) to do this, but try wrapping a soft cloth around the spindle to protect it. Remove the spindle from the faucet valve. Now you’re ready to replace the damaged washers. The assembly should have two: a packing washer, just under the packing nut; and a stem washer, near the bottom of the spindle. Remove the old washers, and locate same-size replacements from the universal kit. Reassemble the spindle using the replacement washers, reinsert into the valve and screw the packing nut back into place. Slide the handle back on and attach with the small screw. Test the faucet by turning the water back on and turning the faucet on and off. HOME TIP: Some professionals recommend coating new washers with a heatproof grease to prevent them from cracking, while others say it doesn’t matter. Use your own judgment. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. My new e-book, “101 Best Home Tips,” is available to download on Amazon Kindle!
