HOLLYWOOD -- I walked down the hill from my home to find a swarm of press. Prince Frederic Von Anhalt, husband of Zsa Zsa Gabor, the star of such classic films as John Huston’s “Moulin Rouge” (‘52), “Lili” (‘53) and the camp classic sci-fi film “The Queen of Outer Space” (‘58), invited the press to see his anniversary gift for Zsa Zsa. Prince Frederic was best friends with Princess Marie-Auguste of Anhalt’s only son, who was killed in a car crash. She was so grief stricken that she asked Frederic if she could adopt

him, and she gave him the name Prince Frederic von Anhalt, Duke of Saxony. Zsa Zsa married Prince Frederic 25 years ago. It was her ninth marriage (though one was annulled). “Silver is traditional for the 25th,” Prince explained, “but my wife already has everything she wants. I decided to give her the biggest greeting card in the world, right on the Sunset Strip, in Hollywood.” Diamonds are forever, but this billboard will appear for only one month. The Prince added, “I knew that Zsa Zsa [who had a leg amputated recently] would enjoy being in the spotlight again. When she saw the billboard on the evening news, it brought a huge smile to her face, and that’s why I did it!” The Prince will be seen in Ben Affleck’s new film “Argo,” which,

August 11 - 17, 2011

coincidentally, is shooting in the Von Anhalt/Gabor house. He’s also planned a big star-studded gala on Aug. 14 to celebrate their anniversary. The Prince added, “The billboard cost only $68,000, my life with Zsa Zsa is priceless!” ••• Now we’ll have the next film in “The Bourne” saga without Matt Damon. In fact, Jason Bourne will be replaced by another assassin who trained in the same program, being played by Jeremy Renner. Trying to keep the “Bourne” flavor going, they’ve cast both Joan Allen and Albert Finney, who were in previous “Bourne” films. Maybe it’s just me, but doing a “Bourne” film without Matt Damon is like making an omelet without eggs! Train Set Q: I have an American Flyer train set manufactured during the 1945-1969 period. I bought this set new and only used it a few times. I would like to find a collector so I can sell it. -- John, Springfield, Pa. A: There are several excellent price guides that document the values of prewar and postwar Lionel, American Flyer, Buddy "L," Marx, Ives, Kusan and AMT model trains. One of the better references is "O'Brien's Collecting Toy Trains: Identification and Price Guide" edited by David Doyle and published by Krause. This book features more than 1,200 photos in full color and more than 6,000 listings and up-to-date prices. This should help you determine the values of your train set. The American Flyer Collectors Club also might be helpful. The address is P.O. Box 13269, Pittsburgh, PA 15243. ••• Q: I have a broadsheet of "Abraham Lincoln's Saloon License," which has been in my family for a number of years. I am enclosing a picture of it and wonder what it might be worth. -- Linda, Flagler Beach, Fla. A: Your poster was a premium, published and distributed by the Minnesota Beer Wholesalers Association, probably during the 1930s or '40s. Although it is interesting, it is, of course, a reprint and not an original, but nevertheless a beer collectible. I suggest you contact Ritchie Dubreuil at the Florida chapter of the Beer Collectors Club of America, 5550 Vanderipe Road, Sarasota, FL 34241. ••• Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Agent Orange Payments Shift into High Gear All across the country, Veterans Benefits Administration claims personnel are working to process the mountain of paperwork as a result of the Nehmer case. The upshot of Nehmer v. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is that the VA must re-adjudicate claims it denied in the past for the three newest presumptive illnesses for Agent Orange exposure. They are Ischemic Heart Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and certain leukemias. This covers claims filed or denied from Sept. 25, 1985 to Aug, 31, 2010, which is the date the service connection was established. Now that the VA is under a court-ordered gun, the process must be completed by Oct. 1, 2011.

Here are some of the differences between a standard claim and one falling under this new ruling, taken from the training manual for new staff: Current: Goes by the claim date. Nehmer: No new claim need be filed if a presumptive illness appeared or was denied. Staff is to find the illness in your records and use that date. Current: Benefits do not go to the estate of a deceased veteran. Nehmer: Benefits survive the entitled member’s estate. Marriage license and birth certificates may be required. Current: Payments are made when possible. Nehmer: Payments must be made within 21 days of verification of entitlement. To learn more about the specifics, go to www.nvlsp.org, which is the national Veterans Legal Services Program. Search for “Nehmer Training Guide,” which includes a letter and the manual. You’ll find dates and locations in the manual, as well as a list of vessels documented to have been at the shore or inland. You’ll also find a list of documents that can be used as evidence, such as TDY orders, shore-leave orders in writing and other documentation that shows the veteran “physically set foot” in the country.

To Crate or Not to Crate? Q: What's your view of kennel cages? My wife hates the idea of using one to train our dog Sandy, but I disagree. What do you say? -- Jerry in Las Cruces, N.M. A: I'm personally OK with the concept of crating (or "kennel cages"). It's an effective way to housetrain a puppy (who won't soil a sleeping or living area) and teaches it to stay comfortable and relaxed

in a similar container, the travel crate, which is essential to traveling with your dog. However, I do see frequent instances where the crate is misused, with negative consequences for dog and owner alike. The crate also serves as a home or den for your dog. So it always has to be seen by Sandy as a safe place to be, perhaps the safest place in the house for her. If you use the crate to punish Sandy, such as shutting her up in it when she's being hyperactive or disobedient, she could associate it with negative feelings and avoid going into it. I recommend you learn as much as you can about using the crate to train Sandy. The American Dog Trainers Network has a list of tips on furnishing the crate, getting her to accept it and using it as a positive training tool. Find the list here: http: //www.inch.com/~dogs/cratetraining.html. It also includes important safety tips, such as always removing Sandy's collar before putting her into the crate, and making sure she's not left in an environment that's too hot or freezing cold. Menard Dismisses His Critics

He has those jaunty sideburns that make him look a bit, you know, colorful. Menard has been criticized because his father is wealthy and has supported his son's racing efforts. Just who out there would pass that up? In truth, Menard is quite modest, as reflected in the fact that he is quite terse. His answers to questions are seldom expansive, and he often speaks in sentences that aren't complete. Examples from his press conference after winning Sunday's Brickyard 400: "Can't change people's opinions. ... Can't control it. ... Definitely for him (his dad). ... Sitting up in a suite for the inaugural one (Brickyard 400 in 1994). ... Saw Rick Mast win the pole. ... Passed a couple cars. ... Just started trying to maintain some kind of lap time being easy on the throttle, easy off, earlier than normal, easy on." You get the point. But anyone who thinks Paul Menard is some international playboy, jetting around on his daddy's money, has got it wrong. John Menard was able to make sure his son got the best equipment, but it was Paul who proved he could do the job. Some find Indy boring. Others complain about how hard it is to see. No one doubts it takes considerable ability to win here. Richard Childress didn't put Menard in his No. 27 Chevy just because of sponsorship from the Menard's chain of home-improvement warehouses. It didn't hurt, though. "I caught a lot of flak back early last year when we decided to go with four teams," said Childress. "I've been watching Paul ever since he won the Nationwide race (Milwaukee, 2006). He doesn't wear equipment out. He's consistent. He's really good. Got a cool head on him in all situations. "I knew if the right situation came along, we'd win. To get 'Slugger' (Labbe, Menard's crew chief) to come over, John Menard support us ... that was a big jump going in on a fourth team."

The reception takes place after the wedding, and guests are often given five almond pieces, each piece symbolizing one of the sacred wedding wishes: health, happiness, wealth, longevity and fertility. Seven days after the wedding is the final celebratory event, known as sabaa, which is for women only and is analogous to the wedding shower we have in the West.

• Many people believe that the Gutenberg Bible, which came from the presses of Johannes Gutenberg in the 1450s, is the first example of a printed book, but that’s not true; it’s the first book printed using movable type. The oldest known printed book is actually the “Diamond Sutra,” which was printed in China more than 550 years before the Gutenberg Bible. • In many Middle Eastern cultures, it is traditional to celebrate a wedding with five events. The first is the engagement party, during which the bride-to-be changes clothes several times. When the bride and groom sign the marriage contract there is another party, again with numerous changes of clothing by the bride. Q: I am really digging the new TNT show, “Franklin and Bash.” Do you know if it’ll be back for a second season? -- Hank F., Baltimore A: Well, Hank, if you’ve got a hankering for a second season of “Franklin and Bash,” then I’ve got good news for you: TNT has picked up the hit legal drama for another season. Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer will return as the titular characters to cause more waves at their button-down agency. No word yet on many episodes will be in the new season or when it will premiere, but we’ll assume it’s summer 2012. The show also stars Malcolm McDowell, Dana Davis, Kumail Nanjiani, Reed Diamond and Garcelle Beauvais. ••• Q: While I am excited to see that Maria Bello is starring in the new, American version of “Prime Suspect,” it got me to thinking about the original British series. Can you tell me where I can see those episodes? -- Kathy D., via e-mail A: You’re in luck! On Aug. Maria Bello 23, Acorn Media will be releasing the first series of the policeprocedural television drama (go to acornonline.com for more details). This series -- which aired in the 1990s and 2000s on Britain’s ITV network, for a total of 14 episodes -- garnered rave reviews and numerous accolades. Aside from starring the fabulous Helen Mirren,

it also had big-name guest stars like Ralph Fiennes, Tom Wilkinson and David Thewlis. Director Tom Hooper, who won the Academy Award last year for “The King’s Speech,” also directed series six. Those are some mighty big shoes to fill for NBC -- which will air the U.S. version beginning Sept. 22-- but I have my fingers crossed for Maria Bello and crew to make “Prime Suspect” their own. ••• Q: I am a huge fan of “White Collar” and have season one on DVD. When will seasons two and three be out? -- Rita S., Port Charlotte, Fla. A: The USA network show about a con man working with an FBI agent to catch criminals (as part of his work-release program from prison) recently returned for its third season in June, so you’ll have to wait a bit for those DVDs. However, you can now find season two at your favorite local and online retailers. The

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D

Acupuncture for Pain Relief DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have never seen you address acupuncture. I have had a bad back for three months, have seen two doctors and have followed their instructions. I have taken medicines that ease the pain. My back isn’t as sore as it once was, but it still bothers me. Acupuncture has been suggested. What are your views on it? -- M.L. ANSWER: I have no misgivings about trying acupuncture for pain relief. The Chinese have used it for centuries. Any treatment that lasts that long must have some value. Fine needles are inserted into the skin at specific points and are left in place for 15 to 30 minutes. From time to time, the acupuncturist stimulates the needles. The American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society endorse acupuncture. A recent review article in the New England Journal of Medicine, a premier medical journal, also endorsed it. Who am I not to follow suit? Back pain strikes almost everyone at some point in life. The booklet on it discusses its causes and treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 303W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ••• DEAR DR. DONOHUE: It’s that time of year again -- the no-see-um season. I can feel a sharp sting when bitten. It goes away and then returns as a large swelling with incessant itching. What can I do to prevent this reaction? Others don’t react this bad. I also use DEET to deter these diabolical pests. Should I wash it off as soon as I get indoors? -- C.R. ANSWERS: No-see-ums got that name because they’re barely visible, only 1/16th of an inch. Dawn

and dusk are their busiest hours. Avoidance is the best protection. The red welt you describe arises about 12 or more hours after the bite and can be as large as an inch in diameter. It does itch. DEET is the best repellent, but it’s not a 100 percent barrier for all users. Have you tried a higher concentration? Are you following label directions regarding when to reapply it? When you get back home, wash treated skin with soap and water. Also, you can spray your clothes with permethrin. It will give you additional protection. Wear long slacks tucked into your socks and long-sleeved tops. As for the itch, antihistamines are suggested. I admit they don’t work for everyone. ••• DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I think I may have the illness them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request where a person pulls out clumps of hair. I’m not sure of the an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, name. I find I do this after I have caffeine. I have been off FL 32853-6475. caffeine for years, and I do not pull my hair out. I thought © 2011 North America Synd., Inc. this might be helpful to others. -- K.H. All Rights Reserved ANSWER: The name of the condition is trichotillomania (TRICK-oh-TILLuh-MAY-knee-uh). Between 4 million and 11 million Americans have Jason Strand it. It’s called an M.D. impulse disorder. I hadn’t heard about a caffeine connection. If this holds 2241 Farnum St., Ste. 102 true for others, they will deeply appreciate your advice. •••
