• It was Swiss journalist and commentator Esther Dyson who made the following sage observation: “The Internet is like alcohol in some sense. It accentuates what you would do anyway. If you want to be a loner, you can be more alone. If you want to connect, it makes it easier to connect.” • The world’s largest colony of ants reaches all the way from northern Italy to Spain’s Atlantic coast. • The first U.S. patent was issued in 1790 for a soapmaking formula developed by Samuel Hopkins. • In May of this year, Canadian chef Ted Reader attempted to break the Guinness record for the world’s largest hamburger. The patty alone weighed more than 300 pounds, and the bun was 105 pounds. Once the burger was decked out with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, red onions, pickles and barbecue sauce, the grand total was a whopping 590 pounds. Guinness has not yet certified the giant hamburger, but it seems a shoe-in to beat the current record holder, which is a measly 158.8 pounds. • Hasbro’s Easy-Bake oven was so popular when in was released in 1963 that it sold a half million of the toys within the first year. © 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Stradivarius Violin Q: Can you direct me to a source where I can get a bona fide appraisal of a violin that I own that is more than 200 years old. Appraisals that I’ve gotten so far are so ludicrous, they defy any comment. The inscription on the violin reads “Nadi Antonius Stradivarius Cremona 1736 gebant Deutfche Arbelt.” -- Desmond, Apopka, Fla. A: Born in Cremonia, Italy in 1644, Antonio Stradivarius perfected the making of violins that are considered to be at the peak of excellence. He made approximately 1,000 violins and violoncellos between 1666 and his death in 1737. Of these thousand instruments, about 650 exist and have been accounted for. The chance of your violin being a genuine Stradivarius is about the same as the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot. Throughout the early years of the past century, countless violins were manufactured in both the United States and Europe, all marked as being made by Stradivarius. It was a sales gimmick that continues to generate questions after more than a century of the fakery. After reading my answer, if you’re still convinced your instrument is genuine, you can contact an expert in this field, Andrew Dipper, Givens Violins, 1004 Marquette Ave., Suite 205, Minneapolis, MN 02904, and http://www.givensviolins.com. This shop specializes in the restoration and appraisal of older string instruments. © 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Truex Likes New Ride With Waltrip Racing Martin Truex Jr., once known for his friendship and affiliation with Dale Earnhardt Jr., is now making a name for himself in the No. 56 Toyota of Michael Waltrip Racing. After winning the Busch (now Nationwide) Series championships in 2004 and '05, Truex made the step up to Sprint Cup and spent four seasons at Dale Earnhardt Inc., which eventually became Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. He made the Chase for the Sprint Cup in 2007, the year he won his only Cup race, to date, at Dover International Speedway. This year Truex has moved into Chase contention in his first season at MWR, where he has been paired with veteran crew chief Pat Tryson. "We've just been steady as a race team, doing all the things we need to do to get points and finish races," said Truex. "There have been a few races where we've had really good cars, and a few races where we were off but still managed to get good finishes, and that's why we're sitting here (in Chase contention). "Pat (Tryson) and all the guys on the (sponsor) NAPA team have done an awesome job. I feel like the last month, month and a half, we're starting to gel and figure out our race cars, find some speed and know where to go to get that speed when we need it. I've been very happy with that and still continue to work on our stuff to try to get better." Before making the move to MWR and Toyota, Truex had a close relationship with his previous crew chief, Kevin "Bono" Manion, who now works with Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray. He compared Tryson with Manion. "They're different in a lot of ways, but I wouldn't say they're like night and day," said Truex. "Their personalities are a little bit different. 'Bono' is more quiet and kind of strict. If you do something wrong, he'll probably yell at you. Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer of the year by the National Motorsports Press Association in 2008. His blog NASCAR This Week (http://nascar.rbma.com) features all of his reporting on racing, roots music and life on the road. E-mail Monte at nascar_thisweek@yahoo.com. © 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

"Pat is a little more laid back, kind of likes to have fun. Both of them do a great job, obviously, and they're both good at calling races and they both understand the race cars well. They're different, but at the end of the day, they are both out there doing the same job, and both do it well."

from Great Britain and its king. The declaration came 442 days after the first volleys of the American Revolution were fired at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. The American War for Independence would last for five more years.

• On June 29, 1613, the Globe Theater, where most of Shakespeare's plays debuted, burns down. The Globe was built in 1599 from the timbers of London's very first permanent theater, Burbage's Theater, built in 1576. • On July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, the Continental Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims the independence of the United States of America

• On June 28, 1928, 26-year-old Louis Armstrong walked into a Chicago recording studio and recorded "West End Blues." Armstrong's 15second trumpet intro to "West End Blues" and his eight-bar solo near the end make it one of the most influential pieces of recorded music in history. • On July 3, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs the Rivers and Harbors Flood Control Bill, which allocates funds to improve flood-control and water-storage systems across the country. The bill was introduced in the wake of disastrous hurricanes that hit the northeastern United States in August 1955. • On June 30, 1962, Sandy Koufax strikes out 13 batters and walks five to lead the Brooklyn Dodgers to victory over the New York Mets 5-0 with his first career no-hitter. • On July 1, 1979, the Sony Walkman goes on sale for the very first time. The initial production run of

30,000 units looked to be too ambitious after one month of lackluster sales (only 3,000 were sold in the first month), but after a massive advertising campaign, available stocks sold out before the end of August. • On July 2, 1992, the one-millionth Corvette, a white LT1 roadster with a red interior and a black roof -- the same colors as the original 1953 model -- rolls off the assembly line in Bowling Green, Ky. The Corvette went into production in June 1953 with a base sticker price of $3,760 (around $30,000 in today's dollars). © 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

One Dog Gets the Bed, the Other the Floor DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I should buy stock in the aluminum foil industry? My 6-year-old boxer/hound mix, Shera, will not stay off the furniture. My bed and living-room furniture are lined with aluminum foil to stop her from climbing them. I have a 14-year-old dog, Bubba, who sleeps with me at night, but never occupies the bed or furniture by day. Shera is kennel trained and sleeps in her kennel at night with the door fastened. Bubba is getting near the end, and I don't want to take on another dog until I solve this problem with Shera. Would it be best to wait until Bubba is not sleeping with me to correct this territorial issue? -- Susan W., via email DEAR SUSAN: I don't think this is a territorial issue so much as an issue of Shera figuring out how far to push her boundaries. Naturally, she will want to get up on the couch or the bed just like Bubba. But you don't have to wait until Bubba is gone to start addressing Shera's behavior. You can choose to wait -- especially if taking care of Bubba is stressful right now and you just don't want to deal with a new challenge. Shera's behavior probably will not change during this period. But if you have the time and energy, start training Shera to stay off the furniture. It's a matter of you being the leader of the family, and what you say goes. That means if Bubba gets to sleep on the bed and Shera doesn't, too tough for Shera. As far as how: I'd recommend spending more time with Shera, playing or doing basic obedience training on the leash, next to the furniture she likes to jump on. When she wants to get on the couch, tug her away, have her face you and command "sit" or "lie down" and "stay." Basically, retrain her way of thinking about the purpose of those rooms. Nourishment For The Soil By Tresa Erickson

No matter how well you tend to your lawn and garden, the soil will lose nutrients over time. To give it a boost, you may need to make some amendments.

Water Lettuce Hyacinth Parrot Feather Umbrella Palm Giant Marsh Marigold Large Assortment of Hardy Lilies Sweet Flag Varigated Dropwort Blue Water Forget Me Not Zebra Rush Pickerel Weed Water Cala Bloody Dock Cardinal Flower Golden Sedge

One of the easier ways to boost the nutrients in soil is to fertilize it. You will find a number of fertilizers on the market, one of which is sure to suit your needs. If you are looking for a greener, more organic option, you might want to try compost. Making compost is easy. Build or set up a compost bin and fill it with yard waste, table scraps and the like. Turn it each time you add new material and try to keep the green and brown material equal.

Easy Pro & Tetra Filters & Pumps

If you would rather not mess with compost, you have other options. You may use dead leaves, farm manure or composted cotton burrs. You may use peat moss or mushroom compost. You may also mix organic materials like greensand and bone meal.

“Speedy Grow” Grew World Record Plants

Whatever amendments you choose, you may add them to your lawn and garden in a number of ways. You may spread one to three inches of the amendment on top of the soil and let nature take its course. You may work the amendment into the top six inches of soil, which may also improve drainage in areas with sandy or heavy clay soil. You may place the amendment around plants or in holes you intend to fill with plants. You may apply the amendment to the lawn with a spreader. You may amend your soil at any time, but the fall is ideal simply because plants need it then after a long summer of growth. The conROCKY MOUNTAIN sistent rainfall at 1540 East 2nd Street that time will also help work the ROCKY MOUNTAIN nutrients into the plant roots.

Summer Art Fun for the Kids Are the kids bored yet? Are they glued to the television or video games? There are quite a few things you can do with them over the summer without spending a lot of money. Make the rest of the summer about art, and plan to hold an art show before school starts. There are many art-themed projects you can do with the kids, and some of them even involve a little learning. Visit Goodwill or the Salvation Army (or ask on

FreeCycle.org) and collect as many types of art supplies as you can find. Look for crayons, colored chalks, paper, paint, brushes and poster board. For those who want to do collages, hunt for fabric scraps and old magazines. Search out face paint, too, and partially filled cans of textured faux-finish interior paint. Save your glass jars. Here are some more ideas: • The kids might enjoy writing their own books and comic books, complete with art and decorated covers. Start with large sheets of paper that can be folded and stitched up the crease. • Let the kids use face paint to make the funniest/scariest faces they can, and have your budding photographer take photos to frame. • Take a walk in a local park and collect leaves, fallen acorns and grasses for collages and mobiles. Let the kids experiment with drawing or painting or taking digital

photos of nature. If you’re near a beach, collect jars of sand to make sand candles or colored sand in jars. • Go to the library once a week. Pick out ageappropriate books on artists and let the kids practice imitating that artist’s work. Use the faux finish paint and thick cardboard to make frames. • By the end of the summer the kids will have a whole collection of artwork and projects for their art show. • For the show itself, string a line across the porch or between trees to hang the artwork. Let the kids design and make invitations to hand out to their friends. Invite the press, too, and use invitations designed by the kids. • With a little bit of planning and not much cash, you can foster some good habits in the kids as you teach them to use their ingenuity to create fun instead of heading directly for the television. © 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
