• Those who study such things say that Italians drink, on average, 26 gallons of wine every year.

By Samantha Weaver

• It was multi-talented Sir Francis Bacon -- he was a statesman, lawyer, scientist, philosopher and author -- who made the following sage observation: “If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts; but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties.” • One of the most highly praised actresses of our time, Meryl Streep, holds the record for Academy Award nominations; she’s been awarded the Oscar twice, but has been nominated an impressive 16 times. • The highest known life insurance payout occurred in 1970, when the widow of a cattle rancher was awarded $18 million in benefits.

• It’s just common sense that people tend to behave better when they’re being watched, but it may come as a surprise that it doesn’t seem to matter whether or not the watcher is real. Researchers made this discovery in an experiment conducted at the University of Newcastle in Australia. In a coffee lounge where paying for the beverage was optional, a picture of a pair of eyes was placed next to the price list at some times, and at other times a picture of flowers accompanied the list. On days when the eyes were posted, more than three times as much money was donated than on days when the flowers were in the same spot. • People magazine reportedly paid $6 million for photos of Jennifer Lopez’s twin babies, Emme and Max. • Between 1960 and 2006, the average American’s production of solid waste -- including everything from paper packaging to lawn clippings -- increased by 150 percent to 4.5 pounds every day. © 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

A record 200 victories do not account completely for Richard Petty’s legacy. His personality is central to the sport. One other man equaled The King’s record seven championships, but no one is going to eclipse the 200 victories, or, for that matter, the 27 races he won in a single season (1967). No race driver was ever tougher than Dale Earnhardt. No one was ever better at closing a deal or doing what it took to win. The presence of Earnhardt’s No. 3 was enough to make most drivers make mistakes, hence the apt nickname The Intimidator. Like Petty, he won seven titles. Junior Johnson is a living, breathing embodiment of NASCAR’s history. He migrated from the highways, where he “ran moonshine,” to the dirt tracks and then the superspeedways. He was among the greatest as driver, mechanic and owner. ••• Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer of the year by the National Motorsports Press Association in 2008. • On June 15, 1877, Henry Ossian Flipper, born a slave in Thomasville, Ga., in 1856, is the first black cadet to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Flipper was appointed a second lieutenant in the all-black 10th Cavalry at Fort Sill in the Indian Territory. • On June 19, 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrives in New York Harbor as a symbol of Franco-American friendship. Nine years late in arriving, the 300-foot statue was a gift from the people of France as a celebration of the Declaration of Independence centenary in 1876. • On June 14, 1909, folksinger and Academy Award-winning actor Burl Ives is born near Hunt City, Ill. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Metabolic Syndrome Simplified What is Metabolic Syndrome? The Metabolic Syndrome is best defined as a clustering of closely related medical conditions which increase the risk of developing heart disease and diabetes. The following features comprise metabolic syndrome that increases risk of future adult diabetes and future heart disease: • Increase blood triglyceride ( a form of fat) levels • Decreased “good” cholesterol levels (HDL cholesterol) • Overweight particularly around the abdomen • Increased blood pressure

• Increased blood glucose level If a person has been diagnosed with three of the above features they have a metabolic syndrome. This is called clustering of closely related medical conditions, by the medical field. Why is Metabolic Syndrome potentially harmful to your health? Metabolic Syndrome increases the risk of diabetes five (5) fold and heart disease by approximately three (3) fold. The metabolic syndrome is present in approximately 20% of adult populations in developed countries and in approximately 80% of people with type 2 diabetes. The level of obesity is increasing in population across the world. The occurrence of metabolic syndrome is likely to increase with the rising levels of obesity and will contribute to the epidemic of

diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is likely to have a marked impact on the prevalence of heart disease and type 2 diabetes worldwide in the next two decades. Other medical conditions such as fatty liver disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, gallstones, sleep apnea and certain cancers will also increase worldwide with the increased level of obesity. The biggest impact the metabolic syndrome has on health is the increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. Obesity has been on the increase of the last few decades during which time most people have been exposed to an energy dense food supply and decreasing levels of physical activity. The metabolic syndrome is strongly associated with obesity particularly if fat is stored around the abdomen. High triglyceride levels have been found to be contributing factor of the metabolic syndrome (calories that are consumed and not burnt are converted into triglycerides and transported by the blood to the fat cells for storage). The influence of obesity on the incidence of the metabolic syndrome has also been observed in children over recent years and obesity is now an important cause of type 2 diabetes occurring in children. Some ethnic groups have a higher predisposition of central obesity than others, for example, the amount of central obesity is greater among South Asians than Europeans and is greater among Europeans than AfricanCaribbeans. Low birth weight may also increase the risk of metabolic syndrome when it is linked with obesity in adulthood.

Q: I was channel-surfing the other day and came across and old episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” I was sure one of the actresses on the show that episode was Ashley Judd. Was it her? If so, what year was that? -- J.W., via e-mail A: That was indeed the “Someone Like You” star, who guest-starred on two episodes of “The Next Generation” back in 1991. That was Ashley’s first role in Hollywood, where she came after college and studied with renowned acting teacher Robert Carnegie at Playhouse West. ••• Q: I was happy to read in your column about David James Elliott’s David James Elliott new Hallmark Channel movie “Dad’s Home.” It got me to thinking that I’d love to see him in another series so I can watch him on a regular basis. Does he have any plans to come back to television in a new series? -- Kim T., St. Louis A: You’re in luck. David co-stars in the summer series “Scoundrels,” which airs Sunday nights on ABC. He plays Wolf West, the incarcerated patriarch of a family of small-time criminals. His wife (Virginia Madsen) must try to make ends meet as the family tries to go straight. David is thrilled to try on this new role, telling me: “This guy, he has a lot of me in him, and he’s got a lot of people that I know in him. It’s just a great opportunity that came along, and I’m just happy to be a part of it. He’s completely different from Harmon Rabb (his character on “JAG”), and that’s dynamite.” ••• Q: I know Alec Baldwin is very politically vocal, but is it true he is going to run for office? -- Paul T., Altoona, Pa. A: According to Alec’s spokesman, Matthew Hiltzick, this rumor is false. He told the New York Daily news that Alec has no current plans to run for office,

but “who knows what may happen in the future?” ••• Q: My mother and I are having a disagreement. We both can remember this series of Polaroid commercials from the early 1980s that featured Mariette Hartley and another actor, and they played a cute, bickering husband-and-wife team. My mother insists the actor was Rock Hudson, but I say no. However, I can’t remember who it was. Can you help? -- Genie W., via e-mail A: I can, Genie, I can. But I also see this as a perfect opportunity to have another contest. Readers, here’s your chance to win an autographed copy of Mariette Hartley’s autobiography, “Breaking the Silence.” Can you tell Genie who that actor was who co-starred with

Hot Cars Are Death Trap for Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I was walking through the parking lot toward the supermarket today when I noticed a little dog barking inside a car that had all its windows shut. Even though the breeze was cool, the sun was still hot and I knew that dog had to be suffering. I ran inside the store and asked the customer service person to announce across the store asking the dog’s owner to please go back to their car. I saw that the owner did run right out and take care of her dog. Can you please remind people that with summer almost here, not to leave their pets inside a hot car, even for a few minutes? -Sherry in Cleveland DEAR SHERRY: Thanks for remind-

ing my readers, and for doing a great job being proactive about that dog. If the owner hadn’t responded, the next step would have been to contact emergency services -- fire or police -- to come and rescue the dog, before temperatures inside the car became too much for the pet to handle. In fact, a closed car, even on a mild day, can become lifethreateningly hot, especially for dogs. United Animal Nations, an animal protection organization

“Free Lunch” Scams Aimed at Seniors

A few years ago, seniors began receiving invitations in the mail to attend a free lunch at a nice location and hear about investment information. Experts would be in attendance to answer any questions. It wasn’t all on the level, however. The Securities and Exchange Commission got involved when it turned out that seniors were facing high-pressure sales tactics -- being pushed to sign documents they didn’t understand and being forced into investments that really didn’t exist. The SEC issued a report after doing a study that showed just how widespread the problem was. Things have changed. The newest incarnation of the “free lunch” scam is a bit more dangerous, as shown in an updated version of the study. Here’s how it works: You still get the same invitation in the mail. But now, when you arrive at the seminar, you’re pressured to divulge personal financial information. The scammers also want your contact information and will try to follow up by meeting you at your home to sell you financial products that might not even be appropriate for you. The study said that 6 million seniors past the age of 55 have attended these free lunches just in the past three years. That’s 6 million opportunities to take our money, not to mention what could be done with our personal information. The AARP has started a Free Lunch Monitor program to help us stay on top of these scams. It even has a “What to Listen for Checklist” to take with you if you decide to go to one of these seminars. Fill out the checklist and send it to the AARP afterward -- it will add to its information base about how these scammers are operating. Additionally, if you’ve received an invitation in the mail, the AARP wants to see it. For more information, you can check the website at: www.aarp.org/nofreelunch. Send Checklists or invitations to: AARP Free Lunch Monitor Program, PO Box 93028, Long Beach, Calif. 90809 Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Out Of Sight By Tresa Erickson

You love to garden and have a menagerie of tools and equipment to prove it. You name it, and you probably have it. While you store

much of your tools in your garden shed, it is starting to get full. You need some additional storage space and a second shed is out of the question. Your spouse would have a fit. It’s time you got creative and came up with some alternative storage solutions. There are many places around your lawn and garden where you can store your tools. Trees, bushes, planting beds, woodpiles and fences all provide excellent coverage. Just stash your large tools and equipment behind the areas and retrieve them as needed. For the storage of smaller tools and equipment, consider purchasing some sort of plastic bin. Several are available, some of which may serve a dual purpose. Some bins may serve as benches with storage inside, while others may be constructed to resemble boulders and the like and serve as landscaping features. You can place these bins almost anywhere, in the yard or on a deck. You can get creative and make your own storage solutions from wood. You may build a bench running the length of your deck with storage inside or add doors all the way around underneath for a unique storage area. You may construct a low platform and fence it in for the storage of your garbage cans. The choice is yours. You don’t have to extend your garage or add another garden shed to house all of your tools and equipments. You just have to get creative and look for areas where you can tuck things out of sight. When possible, store items close to where they will be used. You will make more efficient use of your time that way. Imagine having your pruning shears tucked away in a bench under your big oak tree rather than 25 feet up the hill in your garage. How much easier they would be to retrieve and use.

Auto Insurance Myths Having vehicle insurance gives a feeling of security. After all, if something goes wrong, the insurance company will take care of things, right? Maybe. Understanding what isn’t covered in your policy is just as important as what is covered -- or maybe more important if an accident catches you unawares. Myth: Whatever dollar amount the state requires for bodily and property damage liability coverage is plenty. Not necessarily. It depends on your assets. If you have an accident that includes bodily injury to others and you are sued, you could lose all your assets. It’s the same with property-damage liability. If you hit someone else’s vehicle, your insurer will take care of the costs, but only up to the limits of your policy. You might not be covered for the complete expense if the other person owns an expensive vehicle. Opt for umbrella liability coverage for damage costs that run over the limits of your policy. If a liability case goes to court, verdicts of $1 million or more could be handed down against you. Buy liability insurance with a deductible that starts where your regular policy stops.

Myth: If your vehicle is totaled in an accident, the insurance company will pay off. They’ll probably pay something, but the amount likely won’t be what you expect, and it might not even be enough to pay off what you still owe on the car. They’ll pay based on the cash value of the car, a wholesale amount. Opt for gap insurance to cover the difference between what your insurer will pay for your totaled vehicle and what you still owe on it. Myth: If someone hits your car, the other guy’s insurance will pay for the damage. Maybe, if the other driver has insurance. Buy uninsured motorist coverage, in case another driver hits you and has no insurance. This insurance is a cheap but valuable addition to your policy. Check the exclusions on your policy to be sure what it won’t cover. Look for “Acts of God” such as flooding or hail, accessories you’ve added to the car such as an expensive stereo, coverage while driving someone else’s vehicle or someone is driving yours, and break-ins where expensive items like cell phones or laptops are stolen from your vehicle.
