By Samantha Weaver

• It was Pulitzer Prize-winning American author John Steinbeck, best known for “The Grapes of Wrath” and “Of Mice and Men,” who made the following sage observation: “The writer must believe that what he is doing is the most important thing in the world. And he must hold to this illusion even when he knows it is not true.” • If you’re planning a summer trip to Maine, you won’t want to miss the stunning tourist attraction to be found on Peaks Island. There you’ll find an entire museum devoted to housing a rather extensive collection of umbrella covers. • In the United States, January is the least popular month for weddings. • If you’ve never heard of the quagga, don’t blame yourself. The creature, once found on the plains of Africa, has been extinct since 1883. An odd-looking creature, this subspecies of zebra was once thought to be halfzebra, half horse. Though the front part of its body had the zebra’s stripes, those stripes faded out mid-body and the rest of the equine looked remarkably like a common horse. • It’s been claimed that 19thcentury English naturalist Charles Darwin devoted eight years to studying the lowly barnacle. • We all know that the day after Thanksgiving is commonly known as Black Friday, thanks to all the crowds seeking out deals on Christmas gifts, but have you ever wondered how it got that name? It seems that the moniker originated back in 1965 when the Philadelphia police department came up with the name after having to deal with the traffic jams and shopping crowds. © 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Dog Life Vests, Safety Belts Several years ago, a frightening incident inspired automotive safety specialist Christina Selter to found BarkBuckleUP, a program that promotes pet safety. “We had a near-accident with our dogs in the car. (We were) only traveling about 2 mph from a stop sign, when a car ran a red light and our little Betty fell off the seat. (She) wasn’t hurt, but didn’t want to be on the seat or in the car. It took some time to get her confident again.” Selter, who has an SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) certification, created BarkBuckleUP to remind owners to restrain their pets properly in the car, using safety belts specially designed for pets. She travels the U.S. throughout the year, promoting the message and working with police and fire departments to support the safety program. BarkBuckleUP also focuses on other safety issues, and Selter wants pet owners to stay aware. May is National Water Safety Month, and she reminds owners to keep a close eye on their pets while playing near or in the water.

While explaining that most dogs love water, she warns, “Dogs get tired just like us. They need to take breaks.” Dogs also should wear a pet life vest when on the water with owners — in a boat or other watercraft, for example. To keep dogs healthy, wash them off after they’ve finished their swim. “A few years ago in California at a pet event, there was a huge breakout of hot spots (on dogs) after going into the ocean,” Selter says. “Clean their fur thoroughly and their feet. Clean them off every time.” The BarkBuckleUP website (www.BarkBuckleUP.com) features safety products for pets, including restraints for dogs and for pet carriers, life vests, first-aid kits, and more. © 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Kasey Kahne to Detour on Way to Hendrick FORT WORTH, Texas — Kasey Kahne is headed to Hendrick Motorsports, but it’s kind of complicated. Kahne, 30, has already driven for three teams in the Sprint Cup Series — without ever moving. He began with Evernham Motorsports, which became Gillett Evernham, which became Richard Petty Motorsports. All along, Kahne drove No. 9, but he started in a Dodge and this year changed to a Ford. Considered one of the sport’s more talented drivers, it’s no surprise that Kahne is moving to H e n d r i c k Motorsports once his contract at RPM expires at the end of the season, but he’s Kasey Kahne announced that he will head not moving there dito Hendrick Motorsports in 2012, complicating a team roster that includes Jeff Gorrectly, or at least, that’s the current spin. Next year Kahne will drive for a team not yet announced — Stewart Haas Racing, a Hendrick satellite of sorts, is most often mentioned — while Mark Martin completes his contractual commitment at Hendrick. Kahne will not actually join Hendrick proper until 2012. Or so it is currently assumed. Kahne is willing to wait a year, apparently, in order to join the team that produced the top three finishers — Jimmie Johnson, Martin and Jeff Gordon — in last year’s Chase. “To be in the position I’m in now and know where I’m going to be in 2012, to have the opportunity with Rick Hendrick and everybody at Hendrick Motorsports, to me, it’s an unbelievable opportunity. I can’t wait to get that started.” Beyond the announcement of Kahne joining Hendrick Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer of the year by the National Motorsports Press Association in 2008. His blog NASCAR This Week (http:// nascar.rbma.com) features all of his reporting on racing, roots music and life on the road. in 2012, little is known. Martin has declared he isn’t retiring. Tony Stewart has said he has made no arrangements to have Kahne join him and Ryan Newman, and other scenarios (JR Motorsports, also Hendrick aligned, moving up from Nationwide to Cup being one) are similarly denied or, at least, played down. No one knows whether or not Kahne will take his crew chief, Kenny Francis, along with him — wherever that is.

Q: I have a question about the stars of the TV series “JAG.” I know Catherine Bell is in “Army Wives,” but what about David James Elliott? Where can I see him? — Mare, via e-mail A: David James Elliott, 49, has been keeping very busy with TV miniseries and movies, his most recent being the Hallmark Channel original movie “Dad’s Home.” David stars as a dad who loses his job and has to stay at home. When the former workaholic is suddenly thrust into the lives of his children, whom he doesn’t really know at all, it’s just in time to heal the family bonds he has been breaking. Sharon Case (“The Young and the Restless”) co-stars. The movie premieres on Saturday, June 19, just in time for Fathers’ Day. ••• Q: I have always been a big fan of Emeril Lagasse and always watched his cooking show, “Emeril Live.” I read that he has a new show coming out soon. What is it, and where can I watch it? — Doris J., Atlanta A: The good-natured chef is back on TV with a new Emeril Lagasse variety/talk show, “The Emeril Lagasse Show.” As Emeril himself told me, his goal is to have fun and entertain his fans, as well as his guests: “We had Sammy Hagar on, which was a great show. He’s a great musician, but Sammy just didn’t come to play. He came to not only play a song, but he came to actually play and be a part of the show.” You can catch “The Emeril Lagasse Show” on the ION network Sunday nights at 8 p.m. ••• Q: I was watching a rerun of “The Office,” and I could swear that the actor who plays the pizza delivery boy that Michael and Dwight take hostage is Artie from “Glee.”— Genie J., via e-mail A: You are correct, Genie. I spoke recently with Kevin McHale, the talented young actor who plays Artie on the megahit “Glee,” and he told me what a thrill it was to work on that show. “They were

really, really nice. They’re all geniuses. I remember the very first take we shot was the first scene that I’m in with Steve Carell. He starts improvising, and I had to hide my face behind the pizza boxes, ‘cause I’m like, ‘This is ridiculous.’ Every time I start frowning — the same thing on ‘Glee’ — if you see me frown, it’s because I’m about to laugh.” © 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Here’s a great, decorative way to absorb excess odor in damp spaces (like bathrooms or basements). Wrap a plastic container with pretty shelf paper and add charcoal briquettes or kitty litter to the box. Place a lid on top with holes poked in it. It will absorb the moisture. Check it periodically and replace the contents. • “To keep deer from eating plants, slip remnants of bar soap into pieces of pantyhose and hang on plants. The deer can’t stand the smell.” — M.R. in California

• “To get rid of the smell of burned food in the microwave, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to 4 cups of water in a microwave-safe glass bowl. I use a measuring cup. Microwave on high until boiling, about four minutes. Let it set in the microwave for a few minutes and then remove carefully. You also can boil the mixture on the stove, and it will make the room smell fresh.” — R.F. in Indiana • “Window blinds can be dusted by wiping each blade with a dryer sheet. It discourages dust from settling, and I find that I have to dust them less often.” — C.S. in Delaware • “Use pencil shavings (most are made of cedar wood) around the base of plants that attract pesky bugs. They don’t like the smell of cedar.” — A Reader, via e-mail • Filling up that cooler for a day at the park

We can eat beautifully, we can exercise all we want, but if our body’s chemistry is not working well, then achieving a meaningful weight loss may prove a difficult or frustrating endeavor. Nadia, RN and health coach for Unlimited Potential Center teaches that the body has three sources of energy: Carbohydrates, which are always burned first, Protein, and Lipids (fats). Once the body has depleted its carbohydrate reserves, it will simultaneously draw on its protein and fat reserves for energy. In order to loose weight effectively, your body must work efficiently. “That means staying away from carbohydrates, fats, and sugars and concentrating on just the right amount of pure protein and essential vitamins and minerals”. The Ideal Protein diet pushes your body into ketosis, a fat burning stage until you reach 90% of your desired weight loss. Once there, you learn how to reintroduce these

foods in a healthy manner.” Karen, RRT and health care coach for Unlimited Potential says that “the Ideal Protein protocol is not a hyper-protein diet, it’s based on consuming the minimum requirement of protein for proper ketosis, for vitality, and for life-force energy. There is pure protein in each Ideal Protein packet along with nine (9) amino acids. Karen goes on to say “If I eat a little packet of my protein and it’s juice, it’s the same to my body chemically as if I were to eat a piece of fish, turkey or chicken because it has all the amino acids and it’s a complete protein.” If you want to learn more about this exciting weight loss program, come meet the Ideal Protein National Development Coordinator, Jay Sykes on Tuesday, May 4th at 6:30 at 6600 E. 2nd Street in Casper, (Mountain View Clinic Lobby). You will hear how to achieve weight loss without sacrificing muscle mass as well as gain an understanding of how food is utilized by, and affects the body, including what causes fat storage. Every weight loss program requires a lot of commitment and support. If you are ready to take that journey, we will take it with

you! Convenient Consultation hours are available to fit your busy schedule. For more information, Call Karen at 268-8430.

Coloring Book Q: I have a Donald Duck coloring book with boxed watercolors and crayons that originally belonged to my dad. It was never used. It was manufactured by Whitman in 1937. I almost put it out in a garage sale, but thought I would get your opinion first. My husband thinks it might be worth as much as $50. — Susan, Covington County, Miss. A: I found your coloring book and accessories in the Official Price Guide to Disney Collectibles by Ted Hake (House of Collectibles, $29.95). Hake, who buys and sells memorabilia through his auction house, believes the 96-page coloring book and crayons, watercolors, water dish in the original box and in mint condition is worth about $1,250. You can contact Hake c/o Hake’s Americana, 1966 Greenspring Drive, Suite 400, Timonium, MD 21093; www.hakes.com; and 866- 404-9800. ••• Q: I have several old comic books, including “Richie Rich,” “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court,” “Rip Van Winkle,” “Archie’s Christmas Stocking,” “Archie and Me” and “Jughead.” I also have “The Amazing Spider-Man” collectible series, volumes 3-23. How can I find out how much these are worth? — Irene, Coventry, R.I. A: There are several excellent comic-book price guides. My favorite is The Comic Book Checklist & Price Guide, compiled by Maggie Thompson, Brent Frankenhoff and Peter Bickford. This massive book references 125,000 comics and is updated periodically so that prices listed accurately reflect the marketplace. It is published by Krause and is a bargain at $19.99. It can be ordered directly from the publisher at www.krausebooks.com and 888-457-2873. ••• Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Straight Talk About Debt Anytime somebody talks about having a “strategy” to get out of debt, it pays to be leery. There are scams galore, including those that promise (for a fee) to take your payments and make arrangements with lenders to accept a smaller amount each month. (Unless you send the check yourself, you really don’t know where it’s going.) However, there’s a new book out that talks about strategy, and it’s one you can trust: “Debt-Free Forever (Take Control of Your Money and Your Life)” by Gail Vaz-Oxlade (Collins, $14.95). There’s a lot of no-nonsense tough love in VazOxlade’s plans, and there should be if a strategy to reduce debt is going to succeed. After all, the average consumer has $16,000 in credit-card debt. But under the humor (yes, there’s that, too) is a sound plan. She tells you upfront that it’s going to be hard work, right in the first line of Chapter One, then moves quickly into the all-important first step: Find out where your money’s going (spreadsheets are provided in the book). Step two, facing your debt, is where Vaz-Oxlade takes things beyond the typical “get out of debt” book. Not only are debts written down and categorized, they’re critiqued and analyzed for what they really cost. There is plenty of hands-on help. Focus on longterm goals. Decide what you really want, because with debt control, it matters. Write down your core values, prioritize and set a goal. Find friends who are compatible with that goal (spending less to have fun). Swap bad habits for good ones. “Debt-Free Forever” explains how to get a handle on disappearing money (what happens when the pocket monster eats all the change when you break a $20), 401(k) plans, insurance, credit cards and more. There are worksheets, guidelines, instructions on how to make a budget — everything you need to become debt free, except for a pencil, piece of paper and a calculator. Vaz-Oxlade has a television show called “Til Debt Do Us Part” (about couples in debt) on CNBC and has written 11 books on finances. As she says on her blog: “Money is only a tool. You can use it to your advantage or you can misuse it to your detriment. You decide.” David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible.
