Casino Ashtrays

answers on page 17

Q: I have several ashtrays from Las Vegas casinos that no longer exist. I especially like one from the old Flamingo. Keep or toss? -- Fred, Howell, Mich. A: Ashtrays have become popular with collectors in recent years. The ones you have sound especially interesting, and my bet is that they are valued in the $10 to $35 range, depending on rarity and condition. There are two price guides that you should find helpful: “Collector’s Guide to Ashtrays, Identification & Values” by Nancy Wanvig, and “Collecting Ashtrays” by Jan Lindenberger. Both are available at amazon.com. ••• Q: I have a pile of sheet music that I took to an antiques dealer. He only offered me about a dollar a sheet. What do you think? -- Beatrice, Sun City, Ariz. A: Wayland Bunnell is an expert and collector of sheet music. I contacted him about your collection, and he said that unless you have something extraordinary, a dollar a sheet is probably a fair price. Of course, there always are exceptions to every rule. For example, if most of your pieces are fairly common, a dollar sounds reasonable. If, on the other hand, your pieces feature personalities such

as Shirley Temple or early Ragtime compositions, the values could be much higher. Bunnell is willing to advise you. Contact is wtarrytown@ aol.com. ••• Q: I purchased a tea set consisting of a teapot, sugar bowl and creamer, four cups, four saucers and a serving platter. The pieces are marked Clifton Art Potteries and have a matte glaze in a rose color. I paid $65 for the set and hope I made a good buy. -- Roberta, Maple Valley, Wash. A: I found your tea set referenced in “The Antique Trader Teapots Price Guide” edited by Kyle Husfloen (Krause Books). According to Husfloen, your tea set was made between 1920 and about 1940. It would retail for about $150 if in exceptional condition. ••• Q: I have a 1977 Lincoln penny with an image of JFK facing Lincoln. It is in excellent condition. -- Mary, Deland, Fla. A: Your coin was, no doubt, a souvenir, and only a coin dealer can tell you if it has value. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. • It was physicist Albert Einstein who made the following sage observation: “Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from that of their social environment.” • Unlike humans, birds see everything in focus all the time. • You might be surprised to learn that the bagpipe did not originate in Scotland. This ancient instrument existed in Asia in the pre-Christian era. Those who study such things say that the Emperor Nero was a bagpiper, even performing publicly at Roman athletic events. • Sharks have existed for 50 million years longer than trees. • From ancient times in China up until the 19th century, the upper classes considered very long fingernails to be beautiful and a mark of distinction, indicating that one with such long nails never had to perform manual labor. Cracking was a problem with these long nails, though, as they sometimes were grown in excess of 2 inches long. To combat the problem, the ruling classes would wear special gold and silver covers on their nails. • Even cows have best friends, and they will spend most of their time together. • In a single year, your heart circulates about a million gallons of blood. • You almost certainly have a Social Security number, but did you ever wonder what the numbers mean? The first three numbers indicate what part of the country you were in when you applied (or when your parents applied for you), the next two numbers are a code indicating the year of your application, and the last four numbers are considered to be your citizen’s number. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Paget’s Disease: Bone Building Gone Wild DEAR DR. ROACH: For several years, when I have had blood drawn it has shown an elevation in the alkaline phosphatase. It has been as high as 377 in recent tests. I have had the test to see if it was from the liver, but it was all right. I recently had a bone scan, and the doctor suspects Paget’s disease and is referring me to a bone oncologist. Do you have any comments in regard to this? -- D.C.A. ANSWER: Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme that, when found in the blood, usually comes from the liver. Conditions such as gallstones or others that affect bile flow are the most likely to increase the level in the blood. However, alkaline phosphatase also may come from the bone, and in this case, Paget’s disease is the most likely cause. Your doctor may have determined where the alkaline phosphatase is coming from by ordering a special isoenzyme blood test. The bone scan is usually diagnostic for Paget’s. Paget’s disease is thought to result from abnormal osteoclasts, the cells that normally remodel bone. The osteoclasts break down bone, and osteoblasts build it back up again. Bone needs to be replaced over time to repair any microscopic cracks that have formed. Without continued oN next page...

April 17 - 23, 2014 normal bone turnover, the bones become brittle. In Paget’s disease, the bone remodeling in one or more particular areas is excessive, causing bone buildup. The most common sites are the skull, spine, pelvis and leg bones. Paget’s disease is very effectively treated with medications such as zoledronic acid (Reclast or Zometa). Not all people with Paget’s need treatment; however, a high alkaline phosphatase level usually is a reason to treat. ••• DEAR DR. ROACH: I have two grandchildren who spike fevers and get sick a lot. How valuable are natural wellness formulas to build up their system and get them stronger? Their doctor has told them it will not help, but he isn’t giving them anything to help their immune system get stronger. Any suggestions? -- K.L. ANSWER: The immune system gets stronger as kids age. The key to a healthy immune system remains a good diet, good exercise and sleep, and avoiding too much stress. Good hand hygiene is necessary for reducing exposure to bacteria and viruses. I am skeptical of the ability for supplements to improve the immune system.

Tidbits of Casper - For Advertising call 307-473-8661 • 161 South Fenway, Casper, WY That being said, there are vitamins and trace minerals that are essential for the immune system to function at peak level. Most of us can get adequate amounts from a healthy diet. The supplements sold to “boost the immune system” generally are multivitamins with some additional unproven ingredients. ••• DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 70-year-old man in good health. I exercise daily and eat wholesome foods. I now realize that my sexual activity is better in the mornings. On occasion, I get up, take Viagra and go for a brisk walk, have breakfast and go back to bed. Is the testosterone level higher in the mornings? -- Anon. ANSWER: Yes, testosterone levels are higher for both men and women in the mornings. Even younger men often notice this. Also, Viagra works

Understanding Oil By Craig W. Armstrong

You regularly get your car’s oil changed, but do you ever wonder why? Sometimes referred to as a car’s “lifeblood,” oil keeps the engine clean and lubricates its parts at

the same time. Oil also transfers heat away from the combustion cycle. Sound complicated? It’s really not. A car’s engine is full of metal surfaces that move at extremely high speeds. If these parts didn’t have oil between them, they would rub together and the friction would tear them apart. At the same time the oil is keeping the surfaces apart, it is also transferring heat away. OK, so that makes sense, but how can something as dirty as oil keep a car’s engine clean. It’s actually pretty cool. An engine operates by combustion. In the simplest terms, a tiny explosion occurs, causing a piston to go up and down. This part of the process and many others produce many by-products. These by-products include silicon oxide and acids, which can be harmful to the engine’s parts. This is where the answers on page 9

cleaning part comes in. Oil holds these contaminates in suspension and keeps them from forming on the engine. You hear the term viscosity associated with oil. Viscosity is defined as the property of a fluid that resists the force to cause the fluid to flow. Basically that means how much pressure can it withstand before it moves. When you see a container of oil marked SAE 10W40, what does it mean? First, the SAE stands for The Society of Automotive Engineers. The numbers tell you about the oil’s viscosity. The higher the number, the more resistant to flow; the lower the number, the easier it flows. Oil marked 10W40 means that it can flow at a 10 viscosity grade when it’s cold and a 40 viscosity grade when it’s hot, with the W meaning winter. Keep this in mind; oil gets thicker when it’s cold and thinner when it’s hot. When it’s cold (which makes oil thicker), it must remain thin enough to flow (10); when it’s hot (which makes oil thinner), it must able to remain thick enough to do its job (40). In essence, you’re getting oil that can work all year around. With this in mind, let’s say that you live where it gets really cold in the winter and stays mild in the summer. Then an SAE 5W30 oil might be the best for your car...make sense? As for how often to get your oil changed...the debate rages on. The safest bet is to go by what the owner’s manual says.

Bird-Watching 101

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: With a couple of family members already heavily into it, I’m interested in becoming a bird-watcher too -- if only to have something interesting to talk about at holiday dinners. I thought it would be easy, but even just birdwatching in my backyard, I haven’t seen much more than sparrows. Any tips? -- Bart L., Portland, Ore. DEAR BART: As a new bird-watcher myself, I’ll fall back on the experts on this one. That’s because starting out in the hobby (or is it a sport?) can be surprisingly difficult in some respects, such as finding birds that are more interesting than your common backyard species. The “10,000 Birds” blog has a very nice post that

Sales Consultant

Cell: 307-259-5010 jaysdeebar@aol.com

lays out some key tips for new bird-watchers. First, the time of year is key to spotting certain types of birds; but more importantly, find experienced birdwatchers, and pay attention to what they tell you. It’s not as easy as grabbing a good pair of binoculars and striding forth into nature; you need to know where certain birds are likely to nest or hunt, and the best areas from which to spot them. The Internet is a great resource, and particularly group meet-up sites like Meetup.com, on which you can locate bird-watching groups in your area. If you can’t find one that suits your schedule or that looks “right” for you, contact your local Audubon chapter to find out about other groups, chapter meetings or educational seminars or classes. Even if they’re not strictly bird-watching classes, you may meet other enthusiasts who can point you in the right direction. 307.237.3283 159 N. Wolcott Suite 135 Casper, WY • Yard sale, tag sale, garage sale ... whatever you call it, if you do it right, you can walk away with a decluttered home and a nifty bit of cash, too. Here’s my tip: Advertise, advertise, advertise -- on local message boards and websites, as well as using signs. The more people you drive to your sale, the more you are likely to sell. -- JoAnn • “When you put jewelry out at a garage sale, display it for better results. Use a window screen for paired earrings, or maybe a tie rack for necklaces. I sell a lot of costume stuff in my sales. Kids especially like it.” -- R.G. in Mississippi • One way to organize a tag sale is to group items in bins by price. Or have a dollar table. If you have lots of clothes, you might price it by the piece and have good price breaks for people who buy lots of pieces. • “Put well-marked sports equipment in a

place that can be viewed by passersby. Make attractive displays of toys and tools as well. People are always looking for these.” -- M.H. in Alabama Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. HOLLYWOOD -- While late-night viewers were stunned by David Letterman’s announcement that he’s retiring next year, insiders say, like Jay Leno, it was time for him to step aside. The days of talk shows where they just talk are at an end. Jimmy Fallon’s success is telling networks that late-night shows need to be variety shows that use social mediums to keep viewers’ attention. Letterman had a good run, but didn’t change with the times. ••• Are Arnold Schwarzenegger fans giving up on him? Last year “The Last Stand” cost $30 million to make and earned $48 million, which might have been due to his Oscar-winning co-star Forest Whitaker. “Escape Plan” cost $50 million to film and took in $137 million, which could have been because of his co-star, Sylvester Stallone. His most recent effort, “Sabotage,” cost $35 million but only pulled in $6.5 million despite “Avatar ’s” Sam Worthington, Oscar-nominee Terrance Howard, “Magic Mike’s” Joe Manganiello, and “Lost” and “Intelligence” star Josh Holloway on board. The true test will be the $10 million zombie film “Maggie.” with just Abigail Breslin and Joely Richardson. Hopefully, it will come out after Aug. 15, when “Expendables 3” hits theaters with Jason Stratham, Jet Li, Dolph Lungren, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Kellen Lutz and Kelsey Grammer. The Governator’s autobiography, “Total Recall,” crashed and burned ... could be the public hasn’t forgiven Arnold for his “Maidgate” yet! ••• The tireless Johnny Depp hits theaters this month with the $100

million “Transcendence.” Then he has a cameo in Billy Bob Thornton’s film “London Fields,” with fiance Amber Heard and “Divergent” star Theo James, followed by a role as The Wolf in the $40 million musical “Into the Woods” with Meryl Streep (out Dec. 25). He’s already finished “Mortdecai” with Ewan McGregor, Olivia Munn and Gwyneth Paltrow, and currently is shooting “Black Mass” with Guy Pearce and Dakota Johnson (star of “50 Shades of Grey”), both for 2015. Depp’s original “Alice in Wonderland” grossed over $1 billion, and he’s set for the sequel, as well as “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” which starts shooting at the end of the year. Both are for 2016 release. Chris Pine has “Horrible Bosses 2” (out Nov. 26), “Into the Woods” (out Dec. 25) and the sci-fi film “Z for Zachariah” (currently filming in New Zealand) upcoming, but he must be wondering what became of the March 21 opening of “Stretch” with Patrick Wilson, Brooklyn Decker, Ed Helms and Jessica Alba. Apparently, Universal Pictures wasn’t happy and let the producer shop it around to other studios, but no one wanted it. Maybe calling it an action-comedythriller was “Stretch”ing the point too far! © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Drywall Repair

Q: I know you’ve covered this many times before, but my two sons were chasing each other and one of them crashed into his bedroom wall and left a big dent and crack in the wallboard! He’s OK, but how do I deal with such a big damaged area? -- Sara in Des Moines A: A large area of damage can be a bit daunting, but you can probably replace that section yourself. You’ll need to buy a piece of wallboard that is a few inches bigger on all sides than the damaged area. You’ll also need a utility knife (box cutter), a wallboard saw, a sturdy scrap of plywood or a 1-by-1 board, wood

screws, drywall screws, an electric drill, drywall tape, drywall putty (or joint compound) and a putty knife, and fine-grit sandpaper. The wallboard caved in when your son charged into it, meaning the impact probably occurred between two studs. You’ll find this out when you begin to remove the damaged section. Use a pencil and straight ruler to mark a cutting line along the top, sides and, if needed, bottom of the damaged area. Make the area as perfect a square or rectangle as possible, which will make the repair much easier. Using the utility knife, slice along the lines, then follow with the drywall saw to cut all the way through. Be very careful sawing next to the studs, as electrical and plumbing lines sometimes run along these boards. Use the utility knife or angle the saw to slice drywall that’s flush against a stud. Carefully pull away the damaged wallboard. If part of the damaged area is attached to the stud, tug gently on the attached wallboard to reveal the screw, and then either remove the screw or carefully knock out the drywall from underneath it. Measure the new, square hole, and cut the replacement wallboard to those dimensions. Make sure the new drywall fits -- it doesn’t have to be perfectly snug, but should be pretty close. Now, even if part of the new wallboard will be secured to a stud, you’ll still need to add a backing to the unsecured side (or sides) of the patch, especially if it’s a really big hole. The 1-by-1 scrap wood comes into play here. Measure Continued on page 21

April 17 - 23, 2014

and cut the wood so that it extends an inch or so past the top and bottom of the hole. Place it behind the hole, located about the center of the biggest gap between the studs, and use your electric drill to secure it with a wood screw, top and bottom. With the backing in place, put the new wallboard up with a helper holding it steady. Use

drywall or wood screws to attach the wallboard to the backing boards and to the stud (near the original screw location but not at it). Now to cover it up: Place drywall tape along the edges of the new patch. Using a wide putty knife, apply drywall putty or joint compound over the tape, feathering the edges out to better blend

Page 21

with the surrounding wall. Let the compound dry for at least recommended time, then sand the compound smooth. Additional drying time may be needed before you paint over the repair area, and I recommend priming the area first. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com.
