• It was Benjamin Franklin who made the following sage observation: “It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.” • If you’re like 87 percent of American adults, you use the Internet. The only thing I find surprising about this statistic is that there are 13 percent of adults who don’t use it. • In a recent survey, more Americans said they would have a hard time giving up the Internet than

said they’d have a hard time giving up TV. • Those interested in maritime history (and practically everyone else, for that matter) are familiar with the story of the Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank on the night of April 15, 1912. It’s interesting to note, though, that in 1898 a book called “Futility,” by Morgan Robertson, described an almost identical scenario: The ship in the novel was called Titan, and, like the Titanic, it was trying to break a speed record for crossing the Atlantic. The Titan was declared to be unsinkable, and it didn’t have enough lifeboats for all the passengers. On its fictional voyage in the month of April, it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean and sank, resulting in the deaths of almost all the passengers.

• In Ireland, the police do not carry firearms. Their only weapons are batons and pepper spray. • In 1943, then-chairman of IBM, Thomas Watson, went on the record saying, “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.” • If you’re afraid of sharks, you might want to consider this tidbit: Every year, more people are killed by bees than by sharks. ••• Thought for the Day “In this world, you must be a bit too kind to be kind enough.” -- Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux

Interesting Facts About Weddings The phrase “tying the knot” initially came from an ancient Babylonian custom in which threads from the clothes of both the bride and bridegroom were tied in a knot to symbolize the couple’s union. She Feels at Sea Even Back on Land

DEAR DR. ROACH: My family and I took a seven-day cruise more than six weeks ago. I still am feeling like I am on the ship -- all day, it feels as though I am walking on a swinging bridge. I did not even notice the movement while on the ship, nor did I get sick. I did not take any motionsickness medicine while on the cruise. No one else in my family is having this problem. I am a 50-yearold female. Is there any treatment for this? What continued oN next page...

kind of doctor would I see? How long would you expect this to last? --T.S. ANSWER: You have the classic symptoms of disembarkment syndrome, also called mal de debarquement. Whereas most people getting off a boat or ship will have the sensation of moving for a few hours, in people with this syndrome, the symptoms may continue for months or even years. It seems to be more likely in women, and may have an association with migraine headache. Interestingly, going back on a boat can make it better in the short term, but worse later. One treatment is clonazepam, which provides some short-term relief. Standard treatments for vertigo usually do not help. Fortunately, most cases do get better after some weeks or months, but 18 percent still have symptoms even a year later. An expert in balance problems, often an ENT doctor, would be most likely to be familiar with this condition. The booklet on vertigo explains dizziness in detail and outlines its treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 801W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. •••

DEAR DR. ROACH: I look down in the toilet and see that my urine is white and foamy. What is this, what causes it, and is there anything I can do? -- A.V.R. ANSWER: Foamy urine raises concern of excess protein. High amounts of protein in the urine could result from nephrotic syndrome, an indication of a serious kidney condition. Any doctor can do a urine test for protein; if it’s positive, your doctor will have you collect all the urine you make in 24 hours to see how much protein there is. ••• DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m wondering about the commercials regarding eating ice cream. The way they sound, it’s OK to eat it without fear of fat. I’m a male in his 70s, in fine health, and I am wondering if eating it is fine, but just once in a while. Thank you. -- A.A. ANSWER: Ice cream has more saturated fat and sugar than is good for you. People who want to be super-healthy don’t eat ice cream at all. However, I am a believer that it’s OK to indulge yourself once in a while in something that might not be the healthiest for you. Just make sure it’s something closer to once a month than it is to once a day. •••

Q: I really miss “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” especially designer Tracy Hutson. What has she been doing lately? -- Pamela T., Waco, Texas A: You can still catch Tracy decorating for a cause -- this time she has teamed up with the Design Network (www.thedesignnetwork.com) to star in “Momtourage,” an original video series focused on lifting up deserving moms who have done so much for their families and their communities. Each episode will follow Tracy as she pays a surprise visit to each woman’s home, listens to her story, learns about her family life, and offers a fun and inspirational interior-design intervention -- all in the span of one Saturday. When I spoke with Tracy recently, she told me how excited she was to work with TDN to help these women: “If I have the opportunity to help people, I’m going to take it. That’s just who I am. This series just goes to show what you can do, and how important and impactful it can be on someone’s life -- especially someone who has had a rough time just getting on

her feet. It’s so fun, and it means the world to them.” ••• Q: I finally was able to watch “Hatfields and McCoys,” and I absolutely loved it. When can I see Bill Paxton in something like this again? -- Paul Tracy T., Scranton, Pa. Hutson A: Well, I can’t tell you exactly when just yet, but I can tell you what. The History Channel has ordered “an eighthour television event” called “Texas Rising,” with Bill leading an all-star cast featuring Brendan Fraser, Ray Liotta, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Olivier Martinez, Michael Rapaport and many more. The series will detail the Texas Revolution and the rise of the legendary Texas Rangers, and is set to premiere in 2015. ••• Q: My book club finished reading “The Astronaut Wives Club,” and one of the ladies said she heard

that it is being made into a TV show. Is that true? -- Danni W., via email A: ABC is indeed airing a 10-part series called “The Astronaut Wives Club,” based on the bestselling book by Lily Koppel, which tells the story of the women who were key players behind some of the biggest events in American history. The series premieres July 24 at 9/8c, and stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Odette Annable, Zoey Boyle and Azure Parsons. ••• Q: Sharon Lawrence is one of my favorite actresses. What has she been up to? ? Deanna W., via email A: The multitalented actress -- who has starred in shows like “NYPD Blue,” “Drop Dead Diva” and “Rizzoli and Isles,” to name a scant few -- can be seen in Lifetime’s “Starving in Suburbia,” a heartbreaking drama about the dark and dangerous world of eating disorders. The movie premieres Saturday, April 26, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, and you can read my full-length interview with Sharon as we discuss this important movie, as well as some other projects she has coming up, at www.celebrityextraonline.com. Hospital Patients Risk Infection Hospital stays can make you sick. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that one quarter of patients in hospitals get serious infections. The study of more than 11,000 patients, reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, looked at antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as bacterium clostridium difficile (commonly know as c. diff) and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a staph infection, being acquired in hospitals. Devices, such as catheters and ventilators, were included as the sources of infection. The study estimated that more than 700,000 infections were acquired in hospitals in one year alone. At the root of the massive numbers of antibiotic-resistant infections is the overprescription of antibiotics, which reduces their effectiveness. If you’re due for hospitalization, be bold about your own care. The CDC has a poster with these six steps to help avoid hospital infections. 1) Talk to your doctor, ideally before you go into the hospital. Ask what they’ll do to protect you against infections. If you have a catheter, will it be changed every day? How can you prepare in advance to guard against infection? 2) If no relatives or friends are around to represent you in the hospital, speak up! If you don’t see medical staff washing hands in your room before touching you, assume it wasn’t done and say something. 3) Ask if tests have been done to ensure that the right antibiotic is being used. 4) Know the signs of an infection: redness and pain at a surgical site, as well as fever. 5) If you’ve been taking antibiotics, watch out for diarrhea. Tell your doctor as it could be c. difficile, which can be deadly. 6) Get your flu shots and other vaccinations to prevent infections. Game On! By Tresa Erickson

When you‘ve been in the car for hours on end, and the kids have grown tired of watching DVDs and playing on their computer tablets and cell phones, what do you do? Do you blast some

tunes in hopes the boredom and bickering will go away? Do you toss out some snacks in hopes the complaints and whining will come to an end? Do you turn to some classic road trip games to lighten the mood and boost everyone‘s spirits? Why not try the latter! There are tons of games you can play in the car with no equipment needed. Some of these include: 20 Questions: One by one, players think of a person, place or thing and are questioned about it, up to 20 questions, to which they may respond yes or no. The first player to guess the person, place or thing wins the round. The player with the most wins when time is called wins the game. Â¥ A is for Armadillo: Starting with the letter A and continuing throughout the alphabet, players try to be the first to spot three things that start with the letter A, then the letter B and so forth. The player with the most wins when

the letter Z is reached wins the game. Geography Game: Players take turns naming places throughout the world. All places must be real and start with the letter of the previous place named. Place names cannot be repeated. Players who cannot name a place are out of the game. The player remaining wins the game. I Spy: Players take turns being spies. The first player spots an item and provides a clue about itÑfor example, Ã’I spy with my little eye something neon yellow.Ó Players then get to guess what the object might be. The player with the most correct guesses when time is called wins the game. License Plate ID: Players keep an eye out for license plates from different states and try to be the first to call them out. The player with the most when time is called wins the game. Name that Tune: Players take turns guessing the tunes playing on the radio. Using the ’seek' button will keep play fair. Players not into the radio? They may hum, whistle or sing tunes to each other instead. The player with the most correct guesses when time is called wins the game. These are just some of the classic road trip games to play in the car. There are many others, including some variants of the ones of above. Who doesn‘t remember playing Slug-a-Bug or Where‘s the Alphabet? Not enough license plates from various states? No problem. Players may look at the letters on the plates instead and try to be the first to find all of the letters of the alphabet.

Because Disney bought “The Muppetsâ€? from The Henson Family in 2004, Brian Henson, chairman of The Henson Company, is preparing sequels for “The Dark Crystal,â€? “Fraggle Rockâ€? and “Farscapeâ€? to fill the void. If you haven’t caught the new reality show “Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge,â€? you’re missing out on how they actually create all those fantastic creatures we see in movies and television. The Monkees -- Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith (who returned to fill the void left by Davy Jones passing in 2012) -- have lined up 14 live play dates, starting May 22. • On April 27, 1667, blind poet John Milton sells the copyright to his masterpiece “Paradise Lost” for a mere 10 pounds. Once printed, the poem was immediately hailed as a masterpiece of the English language. In 1671, he wrote “Paradise Regained,” followed by “Samson Agonistes.” He died in 1674. • On April 25, 1859, at Port Said, Egypt, ground is broken for the Suez Canal, an artificial waterway intended to stretch 101 miles across the isthmus of Suez and connect the Mediterranean and the

Red seas. When it opened, the Suez Canal was only 25 feet deep, 72 feet wide at the bottom, and 200 feet to 300 feet wide at the surface. Fewer than 500 ships navigated it in its first year of operation. • On April 24, 1863, the Union army issues General Order No. 100, which provided a code of conduct for Federal soldiers and officers when dealing with Confederate prisoners and civilians. It became the standard for international military law. • On April 22, 1915, German forces shock Allied soldiers along the Western front by firing more than 150 tons of lethal chlorine gas against two French colonial divisions. The Germans, perhaps as shocked as the Allies by the devastating effects of the poison gas, failed to take full advantage, and the Allies held most of their positions. • On April 23, 1961, Judy Garland plays Carnegie Hall in what has been called “the greatest night in showbiz h i s t o r y. ” T h e concert took place on the one night a week that Broadway performers have off -- Sunday night -and the audience was therefore a friendly one. • On April 26, 1977, Studio 54, the most famous nightclub in the world, opens

Give Cats the Carrot

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve owned and trained cats most of my adult life. Regarding your recent column on keeping cats off the counter: You’re right, of course, about training cats when they’re young. But felines are smart creatures, so even an old cat can learn new tricks. The key is to use their dislikes and/or their acute senses of hearing and smell. Most cats dislike getting wet. So, if the rattling pennies don’t work, a small squirt gun or water

pistol -- emphasis on “small” -- works remarkably well with training (not disciplining) felines to not jump on tables, etc. Aim for ears or neck. Avoid the eyes, of course. Cats differ from dogs in that dogs can be disciplined by the stick; cats are trained mainly by the carrot. So when your kitty cat has jumped down from the table, love him up. The same applies for various kitty cat bad habits, such as scratching the furniture, etc. One thing that doesn’t ever work with a cat is swatting them, as one might do with a rolled up newspaper for a dog. Corporal punishment only insults them. Also, for neighborhood cats prowling your garden, flowerbeds, etc., at night and yowling,

black pepper sprinkled about is most effective. -- Stephen B., Daytona Beach, Fla. DEAR STEPHEN: You’ve taught this old cat a couple of new tricks. I agree that cats don’t respond at all well to discipline, but they can be convinced to do (or not do) certain things. When there’s something more interesting to do than jump on the table -- like chase a felt mouse on a string -- cats have no problem hopping down to concentrate on that. Volume 9, Week 13

April 10 - 16, 2014 THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta

Faulty Faucet Causes Homeowner Headache Q: We self-installed a kitchen faucet last year, an expensive single-lever unit with a faucet that curves up several inches high so that there’s plenty of room for pots and pans underneath. For several weeks now, whenever I turn off the water, a thin stream of water continues trickling out of the faucet for several minutes. I make sure to push the lever all the way down when I turn it off, but that doesn’t fix it. How do we repair this? -- Joyce G., Burlington, Vt.

A: If you saved the manufacturer instructions or warranty card, dig that paper out and look for a customer service number. The most likely problem with the faucet is a faulty cartridge, and in a unit that was only purchased about a year ago, that part should be covered in the faucet’s warranty. Contacting the manufacturer through the number given on the manual or warranty card will connect you with a troubleshooting department that can walk you through additional steps to determine whether a replacement cartridge is needed. If you can’t find those documents, go to the manufacturer’s website and look up the faucet model -- a manual may be available online along with a contact number. Or, if it’s out of warranty but you have the receipt, contact the store where you bought the faucet; some homeimprovement stores have return or parts replacement policies in place for many of their items, particularly pricier ones. If the manufacturer (or the store) agrees that it’s a cartridge issue and is covered, it will send you a replacement cartridge. A new set of O-rings also should be included; if not, you’ll want to purchase the correct-size rings for your faucet model at the home-improvement store. Continued on page 21

The beauty of a cartridge faucet is that compared to older valve-type faucets, replacement is almost a breeze. You don’t have to struggle with re-seating the valve stem -praying that you haven’t ground the re-seating tool around too far. Instead, you just pop in the new cartridge and replace the faucet seals. You shouldn’t have to worry about servicing that faucet again for several years. There are a number of online videos that detail the replacement of a kitchen faucet cartridge, which should help you with the repair. HOME TIP: Purchase a set of O-rings or seals for each type of faucet in your home, and tape the bag of replacements to the side or back of each sink cabinet so you have them on hand.
