Todd Bodine Keeps on Trucking

Todd Bodine is the reigning champion of the Camping World Truck Series. In the past six seasons, he has won two championships and never finished lower than fourth in the season standings. Though he is coming off a third-place finish at Darlington Raceway on March 12, Bodine faces challenges in defending his 2010 championship. It remains a struggle to secure enough sponsorship for his Germain Racing Toyota. "We're not even close to set," said Bodine. "Tire Kingdom ... I think they're going to do four more (races). Valvoline's going to do a couple, and now we have one with Georgia Boot. We've still got a lot of races that we need to get sponsorship for. "It's going to get better. I keep saying that since the end of last year, but it's going to get better. I think, by the end of the season, you're going to see a lot of things happening with sponsors, and a lot of these corporations are going to start cutting loose with some of their marketing money and swinging it our way." Bodine, 47, is the youngest of three racing brothers. Unlike Geoff and Brett, Todd has never won at the Sprint Cup level, though he has finished in the top five seven times. With 21 career Truck victories, Bodine ranks fifth all-time. "So far, our luck has just been horrible," said Bodine of the current season to date. "Our philosophy is to go every week, do the best we can and what happens, happens. You can't control everything. We're pleased with our performance.

Puzzle Answers

"The state of the series is pretty obvious. We've got probably the best field of trucks that we've ever seen in the history of the series, and we have a lot of younger kids coming in. The experience level may be down a little bit, but we've got a lot of kids who have a lot of talent and a lot of future and a lot of promise. The state of the he hasn't won at the Sprint Cup level, 47-year-old Todd series is strong ... really Though Bodine has mastered the Camping World Truck Series. (John Clark/ strong." NASCAR This Week photo) The winners of the season's first three races -- Michael Waltrip, Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne -do not compete for the championship. Bodine takes little consolation in that. "We're here to win, not to finish second," he said. •••

Mitral Valve Prolapse Rarely a Health Threat DEAR DR. DONOHUE: About 40 years ago, when I was in my 30s, I was examined by a famous heart doctor who went over me with great care and concluded I had mitral valve prolapse. He put me on medicine, which I have taken to this day. He also insisted I take antibiotics before dental work. That doctor died, and my new doctor, quite young, says I don’t have mitral valve prolapse and that I don’t need medicine or antibiotics before dental work. He saw that I doubted him, so he had me get an echocardiogram. It showed no mitral valve problem. I still wonder about this. I can’t accept that my former doctor was wrong. -- J.P. ANSWER: The mitral valve regulates blood flow from the upper left heart chamber -- the left atrium -- to the lower left heart chamber, the ventricle. When the ventricle contracts, it pumps blood out of the heart. Simultaneously the mitral

valve closes to prevent backflow of blood into the left atrium. Mitral valve prolapse means that the mitral valve balloons upward into the left atrium during heart pumping and might leak blood. In the 1960s, around the time you were diagnosed with this condition, mitral valve prolapse was first described and became a very popular diagnosis. Many of those who were then given a diagnosis of it really didn’t have it. The condition was written about in newspapers and magazines, and dire consequences were ascribed to it. Now, with new knowledge of how this valve works and with new equipment such as echocardiograms (sound-wave pictures of the heart), a clearer picture of the mitral valve is obtainable. Most people who have a ballooning valve are not considered to have a serious medical condition. In only a handful of these people does a significant leak of blood occur. Those are the people who require treatment, and those are the people who take antibiotics before certain dental procedures. Your doctor wasn’t wrong. He was a victim of the inadequate knowledge of that era. Heart-valve disease is quite common. The booklet on it describes the more prevalent varieties. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 105W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ••• DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What is your opinion of prolotherapy? I have quite severe osteoarthritis in both thumbs and have been receiving cortisone injections for it. I was told that prolotherapy would be more effective than cortisone and that the relief would be longer-lasting. -- B.N. ANSWER: Prolotherapy involves the injection of

March 24 - 30, 2011

various substances around damaged ligaments and tendon attachments. It triggers inflammation. The inflammation, in turn, promotes healing by stimulating collagen formation. Often the material injected is dextrose (sugar) mixed with lidocaine (an anesthetic). Some reports say that it is quite successful in things like tennis and golf elbow, where the pain comes from ligament tears. Other reports question its efficacy. It won’t hurt you. I find it hard to believe it is more effective than cortisone for the inflammation of arthritis. ••• Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. © 2011 North America Synd., Inc. ll Rights Reserved

Cat Washes Paws in Water Bowl DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I have an 11-year-old black cat, "Andie," who uses her litter box and then right afterward goes over to her water bowl and puts her paws into it. I scold her when she does it, but it doesn't help. I

have to change her water several times a day. How can I get her to stop doing this? -- Betty, via e-mail DEAR BETTY: Scolding won't help, unfortunately, because Andie either finds this act to be pleasurable or a relief from discomfort. First, there are a few breeds of cat that actually like (or at least tolerate) being around and in water -- including swimming. Andie might have this trait, or she might not. She may just like doing it and has developed a habit of standing in the water bowl immediately after litter box use. If this is the case, you can try placing a tray or bowl of water near the litter box and guide Andie over to that after her toilet, then empty the water until the next time. Or, as soon as Andie gets into her drinking bowl, gently lift her out -- no scolding -- and take the

bowl away for a while. From there on, pick up Andie just before she gets into the bowl, put her down gently, and feed her a treat. Do this enough times and she just may "get it." Another issue that's just as likely is that Andie's paws are uncomfortable after litter box use. Check her paws, especially between the pads; are there nicks or irritated areas? Is litter embedded between the pads? Whether you see any problems or not, try a couple of different litter brands to see if it makes a difference. Also, talk to Andie's vet about her behavior.
