Peter Pan Q: When I was a kid I was enchanted by Peter Pan. Needless to say, I begged and finally got the 1950 original cast album on the Broadway production of “Peter Pan,” in addition to a wristwatch and a coloring book, both issued about the time the movie opened in theaters. What do you think they are worth? -- Doris, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: I consulted several price guides and think your original cast album is valued in the $25 to $30 range, assuming it is in excellent condition. The coloring book, if it was issued by Whitman in 1952, is worth about $20, and the wristwatch approximately $35. ••• Q: A distant relative attended the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, and I have several of his souvenirs, including a pocket knife showing the cascade fountains, a plate with a design of the observation wheel and several silver-plated spoons. -- Gerald, Divide, Colo. A: One of the better price guides is 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair Mementos and Memorabilia by the late Robert L. Hendershott, and privately published in 1994. Both your knife and plate are referenced and listed in the $100 to $200 range. Considering that this excellent guide is now 15 years old, I would add about 30 percent to allow for appreciation. Most silver-plated spoons from the fair seem to sell in the $15 to $25 range. This was, without a doubt, one of this country’s most popular fairs, and items from it are both plentiful and popular with collectors. ••• Q: While on vacation several years ago, my late husband purchased a Royal Doulton figurine called “Fortune Teller” for me. I would like to know its approximate value for insurance purposes. -- Betty, Sun City, Ariz. A: Your figurine was introduced in 1955, and production continued until it was retired in 1967. Ac cording to Royal Doulton Price Guide, edited by Kyle Husfloen and published by Krause, your figurine would retail for about $550. ••• Q: I have a set of International Silver flatware in the Enchanted Rose pattern. When was it made? -- Art, Portsmouth, Va. A: It was introduced in 1954. ••• Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Psoriasis Sometimes More Than Skin Deep DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Your article on arthritis was very interesting, but you did not explain about the arthritis that comes with psoriasis. I have it, and I know of two other people who have it. We don't understand it at all. Please explain. -- B.E. ANSWER: Autoimmunity is the explanation for many illnesses, including both skin and joint psoriasis. "Autoimmunity" indicates that the immune system -- our protection against germ invasion and other harmful attacks -- for reasons not yet understood, turns against our own bodies; in this case, it's the skin and joints. The immune system targets joints in as many as 7 percent of those who suffer from skin psoriasis. That's a considerable number of people when you consider that as many as 3 percent of the entire population suffers from skin psoriasis. Skin psoriasis precedes joint psoriasis most of the time, but there are instances when both occur simultaneously or when joint involvement appears before any skin manifestations. The fact that skin and joint psoriasis run in some families also points to a gene influence on these conditions. Any joint can be affected. The topmost finger joint, the one below the fingernail, is frequently targeted. Back, neck, knees, you name it -- psoriasis can strike it. Like all arthritic joints, psoriatic arthritic joints are swollen, red, tender and stiff. The severity of joint involvement doesn't always mirror skin involvement, but it does correspond to nail changes. Nails have small pits, become loosened from their attachment to underlying skin, often

Better Times Ahead at Petty Motorsports Petty Enterprises won 10 championships in what is now known as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, a total matched only by modern dynamo Hendrick Motorsports. But all 10 of the Petty Enterprises titles came with men named Petty behind the wheel. Richard Petty won seven championships, while his father, Lee, won three. Richard Petty's last championship occurred in 1979. The team currently known as Richard Petty Motorsports is descended from Petty Enterprises but is no longer wholly owned by the family. The current team, recently reconfigured once again in terms of ownership, has roots in Petty Enterprises (268 Cup victories), Robert Yates Racing (57) and Gillett Evernham Motorsports (15). Kasey Kahne won twice in 2009 while employed at the team, but he has moved on to Team Red Bull this year and is headed for Hendrick Motorsports in 2012. A year ago, Richard Petty Motorsports entered four Fords in each Cup race: Kahne, A.J. Allmendinger, Paul Menard and Elliott Sadler. Menard has since moved to Richard Childress Racing, and Sadler is scheduled to compete in the Camping World Truck Series. Allmendinger, who finished 19th in the 2010 Sprint Cup standings, is back, along with newcomer Marcos Ambrose, who was 26th. The team, no longer associated with previous principal owner George Gillett, will field only two Fords this year. Petty regained control of the team and managed to acquire new investors. The decline of Gillett's business empire created hardships, particularly during the latter half of the 2010 season. Allmendinger hopes, and believes, that smaller will be better. "This team has had a lot of good resources, but it was just spread too thin," he said. "Obviously we went through a rough time at the end of last year that we fought through, and hopefully we are better because of that. We are more funded now, and more money helps." Ambrose, the Australian driver previously at JTG/Daugherty Motorsports, said, "We need to win, no doubt about it. We expect to

The so-called St. Valentine's Day Massacre motivated federal authorities to redouble their efforts to find evidence incriminating enough to take Capone off the streets. • On Feb. 16, 1878, the Bland-Allison Act -which provided for a return to the minting of silver coins -- becomes the law of the land. Pet Ownership

February is Responsible Pet Owners' Month. It's an interesting designation, really, as I'm not entirely clear as to whether we're supposed to be celebrating Responsible Pet Owners, or making pet owners feel guilty about not being as respon-

sible as they should be. On one hand, I'm getting plenty of notices to remind my readers to take their pets in for checkups (if they haven't done so already), get their vaccinations up to date and basically work harder at keeping pets healthy and happy. On the other hand, I'm getting plenty of press releases about scads (that's right, scads) of products that apparently are absolute must-haves in order to be a truly responsible pet owner. To me, it's all a bit weird. Isn't responsible pet ownership a year-round activity? Has it suddenly become OK to just condense our responsibility to our pets into the shortest month of the year? Is responsible pet ownership really being promoted, or is this just another way for marketers to convince pet owners that they have to have the latest, most expensive tooth-brushing devices to keep their dogs' teeth from just falling out? Not that there aren't good products being touted. Safety harnesses to keep your pet in place while traveling in the car -- good idea. Better, safer chew toys for dogs -- another good idea. What I'm getting at is this: Designating a month

for responsible pet ownership is a well-intentioned move, but truly responsible pet owners consider it a year-round occupation. Why not celebrate responsible pet owners for who they truly are -compassionate people who see their pets as part of the family and make sure they get the care and love they deserve, all the time?
