The symbol of London, The Royal Family The Queen of England is the state chef but her powers are limited by the British parliament laws. The British admire the Queen and her work that she has done for 60 years.

The monarchy is acclaimed by the British as the national symbol. According to a Guardian’s survey, 69% of the British think that the monarchy is beneficial for their country against only 22% (May 2012) The British monarchy cost 40 million of pounds each year. For most of the British, it is largely justified.

The Queen hasn’t always been very popular. At the Princess Diana death, the royal family lost fame: In comparison to Diana, the Queen was described like someone distant, detached and cold.

Diana From the moment she was engaged with Prince of Wales in 1981 until her death in 1997 due to a car accident in Paris, Diana was one of the famous women in the world. She also was a world charity emblem. In fact, she created several organizations to defend some causes, for example about AIDS problems or to eradicate the explosive mines. After her divorce, the Queen granted the title of Princess of Wales. But she is more known in France under the name of Lady Diana or under the diminutive of Lady Di.

About Music, London had and has several artists… Amy Winehouse English singer and songwriter, her music is a mix of jazz, blues and soul. She died the 23rd July 2011 in London, She enters in the 27 Club, term used to refer to popular musicians who have died at the age of 27 like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Robert Johnson and Brian Jones. In 2003, Amy Winehouse's debut album, Frank, was critically successful in the UK and in 2006, her second album “Back to Black” won 5 prizes. Amy Winehouse caught the media attention with her style, particularly her hairstyle, her tattoos and her eyeliner. She inspired several fashion designers. The singer had known depression problems; she was drug addicted and alcoholic.

He is an English rock singer-songwriter, composer and pianist, and was the Diana’s favourite singer. In 1997, to pay homage to Diana he brought out again "Candle in the Wind", The princess’ favourite song. 33 million of single were sold. It is the most sold single of the world.

The Beatles is an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960, with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. This band is the most popular one in the world! The Beatles recorded 12 albums and composed over 200 songs. The Beatles had recorded in the Abbey Road Studios in London. The title of their last album is Abbey Road (1969). The record sleeve shows the 4 members of the band walking across the zebra crossing located just outside the studio entrance. This crosswalk was given Grade II Listed Building status by English Heritage, it became a real tourist site and a popular photo-opportunity areas.

David Bowie David Robert Jones was born the 8th January 1947 in London. He is a singer, composer, album producer and a British actor. His musical career made a deep impression and he is known for his changing style for 40 years. He has stood out as the non-conformist man of the pop music, several artist were influenced by him. He sold over 140 million of album in the world.

And to be more serious, James Parkinson Born in 1755 in London and dead in 1824, he was a doctor, a geologist, palaeontologist and a British political activist. As a doctor, he left his mark on the neurology history by describing precisely, in 1817, an unacknowledged disease in « An Essay on the Shaking Palsy ». This disease that Parkinson named paralysis agitans would be later renamed by a French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot the Parkinson’s disease to pay homage to him.

Jack the Ripper is an unidentified serial killer who lived in London at the end of the XIX century. He killed at least five prostitute of Whitechapel in 1888 (The same place where I lived the two first week of my internship… Good to move!)
