BUGGIN OUT

TEEN DIVORCE 'ONE TO ONE'

Teen Divorce, the Jacksonville based indie rock band, recently released their new EP: One to One. If you missed the show at Jack Rabbits, well that’s a bummer, but there is still hope for you thanks to good ‘ole technology. Stream that crap on Spotify, iTunes, or whatever else you can get your grubby little hands on. If you love it, check out Boston Marriage, Boysin, Stress Fractures, and Runner High. If you don’t

love it well then good thing you didn’t bring your crappy vibes to the show!! Also, The Bughouse is an awesome oasis of indie rock music and lots of people wearing vans so be sure to check that out on the book of faces and maybe you can score a conversation with David Kennedy, Mr. Bughouse himself (ask him about his bugs).

give me all your bugs. 12

RAIN: uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh why is it called The Bughouse? KEVIN: i make resin bug things ALI: oh nice! RAIN: dude I have a huge bee you could resin!

KEVIN: wait you have a dead bee?? RAIN: omg I collect dead bees, wait doesn’t everyone collect dead bees? KEVIN: give me all your

bugs i will put them in the resin. RAIN: whats your favorite bug? KEVIN: florida bug? RAIN: yes. KEVIN: locust are pretty fucking crazy, i watched a whole family of them grow up. ALI: OH damn… KEVIN: there was 500 of them! 3 of them made it. ALI: thats legit… lots of noise. KEVIN: you guys saw the freezer right? ALI & RAIN: no??? RAIN: why would we open your

freezer we’ve never been here! ALI: we need to continue this story another time this is getting interesting RAIN: yeah we need go, let me ask one more question. what's your favorite thing about throwing a party at your house?? KEVIN: uhhh i really

like the opportunity for people to see music they wouldn’t typically see, people make things work here, people were sick tonight and missing band mates and they still all killed it. the dedication for stuff like this is more legit. RAIN: yeah and how they kicked everyone out for talking. KEVIN: yeah that was me. RAIN: oh… that’s dedication ALI: that was me, I was talking, I’m so sorry.

faze wave

Harbor Tavern january eighteenth two thousand eighteen We met them before the show. Their setup was cool, lots of lips, and the guy was super nice and he played bass well. The drummer caught my attention, no not with his unbutton velvet shirt...but his intense mood while playing the drums. The vibe was cool but not what I expected. More poppy than punky, which their attire kind of portrayed. They are from Nashville and will tour part time with faze wave. I barely remember the second act but I know that every single member had cool hair. Finally Faze Wave came on and I got to dance!!! Charlie took the pictures during this show because the dancing became a danger to the camera...yeah...Charlie came too. Anyways, Faze Wave was fucking great. I took a video of the wrong person for Matt’s mom and I am really happy that happened except for the fact that Land Before Time wasn’t showing.

“I barely remember the second act but I know that every single member had cool hair.” It’s true, BabyBlu did have cool hair. His music can be described as “bedroom dream pop” and you should follow him on the ‘gram as well for a tumblr worthy feed at thisisbabyblu. Finally…FAZE WAVE!! The lights go out and the projection screen flickers as Space Odyssey plays over the Jacksonville-based band. Faze Wave begins their set with “Makeout” and it immediately gets the crowd dancing. Rain and I secure our spot up front next to Matt’s aunt, Apple. With 1% left, Apple waves her phone’s light on the stage making the small space flash. Faze Wave’s alt-indie surfer sound amplifies as Matt stands on the Zack’s drums. “I mistook angel baby for Maroon 5….haha just kidding”, Rain yells in my ear over the music. Jet Black Alley Cat is more pop than punk, with their style matching their sound. The drummer caught our attention, no, not with his unbuttoned velvet shirt, but his intense mood while playing the drums.

Faze Wave’s drummer, Zack, gave us some insight on what it’s like to play in the band. His favorite part about playing small venues like Harbor Tavern: Seeing everyone’s faces. The energy. How he got in with the Faze Wave group: He’s known them all since they were 15. They’ve played together for four or five years. Him and Matt, the singer, are the only original members and they write the songs together. Does he always put his hair in a bun when he plays the drums: No. Is it acceptable for the drummer to take off their shirt when it’s hot as hell: Yes. Space Odyssey or Land Before Time: Land Before Time. He likes dinosaurs. What’s his last name: Stickler, and he doesn’t like it. Which place is he most excited to play on their tour: San Diego and San Francisco and also Atlanta.

cigarettes & sweat.

rat town We were spontaneous in the decision to venture back to Harbor Tavern. T posted on instagram about the show and I knew we had to go. Ali was easy to convince, Jack not so much but the IPA’s helped my persuasion tactics. After the plan was official, Ali filled my water bottle with wine, Jack filled the other with beer and we were off. After a long drive of singing (more like yelling) we arrived, parked and paid the $5 cover to get into the smoke-filled rat town. Somehow we always show up to these things early, so I bought a beer and we stood around until The Mother Gooses started to play. And they were good, similar to Allah Las. Just what I wanted to hear. The crowd was loving the easy going, upbeat, punky sound. Everybody’s feet were moving. The switch between The Gooses and Darkhorse was smooth and hot. The room was steaming almost immediately. Darkhorse Saloon was loud and rough and drunk. The dancing escalated and next thing I know there were people on stage, people trying to crowd surf, and people pushing in all directions. The rest was a blur. I think we ended up leaving before Gov Club finished their set because the vibe was sucky.

BEN: I’m a solo band but I always try to rock with my friends. I have friends all over the country. I have friends in LA and I have a band there and then I have friends in New York and I have different band there. The drummer and the bassist just met each other. BEN: I only chill with vibing chillers. RAIN: How do you meet up and just know how to play? Do you have to teach them how to play? Like how does it happen? BEN: They are all competent musicians, plus all the songs are really easy so they can learn in like five seconds. Its like the kiss

method, ‘Don’t bore us, get to the chorus’ you know what I’m saying? RAIN: Thats not the kiss method someone else said that! God who is it!! BEN: Kiss. RAIN: Bon Jovi just said that on Colbert like two nights ago. BEN: Who do you think they got it from?!! *interview muffled by music* BEN: YA, I dropped out of Berkley college and then wrote a song about how it didn’t rock. You can’t teach rock music. Its an attitude. It a personality. There’s a saying if you graduate you didn’t make it

Winterland Presents at The Space Gallery

Winterland Presents, a music festival, which included two nights of psychedelic, punky surf tunes headlined by BOYTOY and the Jacuzzi Boys. The sumo wrestling, karaoke, fort-building, and steady flow of local craft beer created a diverse atmosphere of husbands, wives, kids, and parents. The scene was fashionable & fun. Glenn van Dyke teamed up with the Bennet’s, Lena Simon, Wyatt Parlette, Matthew Shaw, Daniel Terry, Dane Jefferys, Keith Marks, Cameron Beard, Greg and Michael Van Dyke to throw this banger. With attendance and participation from Aardwolf Brewery, Bold City Brewery, Black Rose MFG, Body And Soul, Jax is Rad, Volcom East, and Burger Records, this sealed the deal for making it the coolest event of the year. Jack Rabbits provides an intimate, albeit slightly grungy, environment to see a variety of local, and occasionally, national acts. The space is small, but that’s what allows you to get up close and personal to the band. With only a $10 cover fee, it’s a great place to check out local talent for a cheap price. The bar provides reasonably priced beer and wine, including some local brews on tap. Be sure to bring some quarters to play pool or select old school arcade games (like Pack Man!). 1528 Hendricks Ave Jacksonville, FL
