FOREWORD Dear Partners, dear Readers, this opening 2011 newsletter number is specifically focused on the National Carlo Collodi Foundation. This organization is the promoter and leading partner of the P.IN.O.K.I.O. project. Its experience with children’s literature and culture promotion through art and communication makes it perfectly fit for such a project. The focus of the Collodi Foundation work is Pinocchio as a world-leading figure in literary imagery – and not only in the literary one. Pinocchio and its adventures are the subject of a park of art and architecture the Foundation created and manages. Since its opening in 1956, it attracted more than six million visitors in Collodi. Let us read about it in the words of prof. Vincenzo Cappelletti, the Collodi Foundation President since 1989: ”In 1950’s and 1960’s the National Carlo Collodi Foundation planned and achieved the building up of Pinocchio Park in Collodi, a village nearby Pescia, a historical town in north-western Tuscany. That village is connected to the life of Carlo Lorenzini (18261890) – a patriot, journalist and writer, who took the name of that village as his pen name, because his mother was born and raised there, while he had spent at his grandparents’ some years in his childhood. Carlo Lorenzini, aka Collodi, is the author of a global masterpiece: the Adventures of Pinocchio. The Story of a Puppet, both literary and educational value of this book have been acknowledged more and more since 1883, the year when it was first published. These values have inspired the translation of this book into innumerable languages, be them widely spread or used by numerically small minorities. Professor Rolando Anzilotti from Pisa University was the first proponent and patron of Pinocchio Park. Contributors to its creation and making were prominent figures from arts and architecture such as Emilio Greco, Venturino Venturi, Pietro Porcinai, Pietro Consagra, Marco Zanuso, Giovanni Michelucci. In the more recent decades the Collodi Foundation has been acknowledged as a cultural institution of national relevance. At the same time, it chose themes connected with the life and culture of the young in the present society as a guideline for its research activities; it broadened its horizons from Italy to the European Union, and introduced its projects and activities in Brussels, where it just opened a first contact point. The National Edition - an opera omnia publication that the Italian State officially supports and partially sponsors to point out the importance of a writer in Italian culture - of Carlo Lorenzini/Collodi, directed by the scholar Daniela Marcheschi, has also been actively forwarded by the Collodi Foundation both in cultural and material aspects. Through the creation of Pinocchio Park the National Carlo Collodi Foundation has translated a book in pictures, landscape and spaces, stones. All together they form a summary, others better said a synthesis, of the masterpiece by Carlo Lorenzini aka Collodi. It is a great merit to enable people to get nearer to a message originally conveyed by words - that is a book - through images, shapes, statues, in a word through a different way. The sculpture group that shows Pinocchio and the fairy looking at each other, the fairy herself who makes one shape with a flying bird, the sea characters, the shark in whose stomach the puppet and his father meet, they all correspond to pages from the book.

We may ask ourselves: is it always possible that a narrative in stones takes the place of a narrative in words? No: the substance only can be delivered by such different yet symmetric languages. The Pinocchio Park would not have been possible if the story Lorenzini/Collodi wrote had not been a quest for deep truths. And if Collodi’s puppet had not been suitable to be a fantastic, not real figure, that yet reminds us of the substance of our life, of the choices that make us deserve inner joy and approval from our fellows-humans.” After fifty years of activity on local, national and international level dedicated to Pinocchio, Carlo Collodi, and children’s books, the Collodi Foundation is ready to make it official that its activity can be regularly established on a European level, and its model of intervention for cultural and educational action through Pinocchio character can be used in didactics and campaigns on a wider range of topics. That is where such projects as P.IN.O.K.I.O., or the cooperation protocol to implement campaigns for sustainable lifestyles subscribed with EESC-European Economic and Social Committee, come from. A TERRITORY, A WRITER, A FOUNDATION: COLLODI WITH PINOCCHIO FROM A VILLAGE TO THE WORLD

Not everyone knows that the brilliant creator of Pinocchio and his extraordinary adventures was Carlo Lorenzini (Florence, Italy, 1826-1890), aka Carlo Collodi, a passionate protagonist as well in battles during Italian struggle and wars for independence and unity, as in the best cultural scene of his time, when he was appreciated as a master of journalism and humour narrative, a music, literature and theatre reviewer, eventually, as a children’s literature writer. This multi-faceted 19th century intellectual was born in Florence, yet his mother’s family lived in Collodi, where his grandfather was a steward for the Marquee Garzoni, whose noble mansion and monumental garden still dominate the village landscape. Most of us are likely to need some information to understand what connection exists between The Adventures of Pinocchio author Carlo Lorenzini (pen name: Collodi), Collodi the village, and the National Carlo Collodi Foundation. The best way to start giving such information is probably to talk about Pinocchio himself. Pinocchio: or rather, one of the best known literary characters in the world. There is no other figure that possess the same fantastic power to evoke the wealth and wonder of childhood. With his long and mobile nose, Pinocchio embodies the dynamic and powerful feeling of nature that drives our lives, which children can perceive in both a concrete and obscure way.

In 1883 he published The Adventures of Pinocchio. Story of a Puppet, a universally acclaimed masterpiece where he transfigured memories and images from his childhood. That is why this Tuscan village, Collodi, could not forget neither Pinocchio nor its author, nor children: the child that Carlo Collodi had been and he had so admirably refound in the literary exercise; the children he had invented his wonderful puppet/boy for. That is the reason of existence for the National Carlo Collodi Foundation. It was established thanks to the creativity and efforts of scholars, journalists, artists, literature-lovers, with the aim of enhancing and spreading knowledge about the life and work of Carlo Collodi, with special regard to The Adventures of Pinocchio, as a model for literature and children’s culture. character first made his way in contemporary art. Every visitor, young or old, Italian or not, can compare and recall its imaginative world as he goes around and admires the works of art. in this park children can move around safely and freely, adults can share their simple and genuine surprise and fun. Everyone can experience the charm of (re)discovering oneself by entering the fascinating universe of the puppet’s adventures and becoming part of them. That is how literature becomes life, and reaches out to everybody – everybody without exceptions.

mind and celebrate to Italy and to the world Carlo Collodi, author of a worldwide renowned masterpiece. Pinocchio and his adventures were considered the best mean to show children - and remind adults - of how literature is beautiful and deserves attention, so encouraging reading; Carlo Lorenzini was to be affirmed as a great writer and journalist, the importance of his work still to be discovered and popularized. These reasons were the starting point and the guidelines of the Committee and the Foundation work for about fifty years. Instruments developed: Pinocchio Park, activities in and for schools or families, collections of essays, a website, symposia for scholars, researches on the life and work of Carlo Lorenzini and later on themes connected to that. Especially thanks to Pinocchio, these connections revealed to be numerous and various ones: didactics, comparative languages and literature, journalism and communication, arts, theatre, cinema, history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology.

NATIONAL CARLO COLLODI FOUNDATION AS P.IN.O.K.I.O. PROMOTER AND LEADER The National Carlo Collodi Foundation derives from a Committee for a National Monument to Pinocchio that was established in the 1950. Then a fear hanged over scholars, pedagogues and teachers: that comics, with their simplified written language and their mainly iconic communication, could prevent children from developing and mastering a totally verbal and written language, as the latter is more abstract and difficult to achieve both for comprehension and expression, so that it would be impossible to them to appreciate literature. Besides, it was considered inappropriate that just two small stone tablets – one on the house where Lorenzini was born in Florence, the other one on the house where the writer’s mother was born in Collodi - would re-

The many “lives” of Pinocchio, his characteristic to change and yet remain the same, little by little qualified him as an archetype of our times, and a global one. As such, it can convey - under different shapes and in different contexts different messages, best of all if of educational relevance.

That is how Pinocchio in the 1990 became testimonial of a campaign against smoke addressed to early teens; later he accompanied and encouraged children aged 6 to 11 to discover interesting places of their town or their vacation places, in cooperation with the Italian Touring Club. The Collodi Foundation raised in Collodi the tallest wooden Pinocchio in the world. The sympathy that this “giant toy” inspires has been used by the Foundation to drive visitors in Collodi and on the Foundation website on the theme of children’s rights, with a signatures collection to claim the permanent inclusion of the UNO Convention on the Rights of the Child in the EU Constitutional treaty. With Pinocchio, the Collodi Foundation already went beyond the book to enter the international debate on wider topics concerning childhood, education, social life. In 2008 the Collodi Foundation joined the Anna Lindh Foundation and with its national school contest “Pinocchio and His Friends – Pinocchio’s Birthday” submitted to Italian schools the ALF campaign theme “1001 Actions for dialogue”. In the same year it ideated and implemented the primary school interregional campaign “Pinocchio fa la differenza (Pinocchio makes the difference)” to teach schoolchildren from primary schools (aged 8-9) reasons and ways of domestic waste collection, a campaign that lasted 9 months during school year 2009-2010, with 1000 pupils from 24 small towns in central Italy involved, and is now being repeated with their younger schoolfellows. In 2010 the success of this educational project (that is also partner of SEE-Sustainable Energy Europe) lead to the signature of a cooperation protocol with EESC-European Economic and Social Committee for campaigns to a carbon free society with Pinocchio as testimonial and protagonist.

That is the road that led us to imagine and shape the P.IN.O.K.I.O project, including the partnership that is implementing it in 5 EU Countries and in Switzerland. Besides being leading partner (which implies specific responsibilities in project coordination and accountancy), the Collodi Foundation with its representative Prof. Daniela Marcheschi chairs the Scientific Committee of the project. Such committee has delivered guidelines on the meaning and the uses of narrations in enhancing intercultural dialogue and the development of the key competences in pre-primary and primary schools, and edited a basic list of narrations from different European and non European countries that might be taken by teachers as basis for their work with schoolchildren.

become part of these schools programme for the school year 2010-2011. Sixteen forms (9 from pre-school, 7 from primary school), seventeen teachers (3 of them with special didactic tasks for disabled children), 300 pupils (32% of them of non-Italian origin) are taking part in it. More would have, had it not been impossible due to numerical limits for the experimentation. In-training teachers promised to share the knowledge and inputs they receive in P.IN.O.K.I.O. activities with their colleagues, and already do.

Teachers and schoolchildren from Pescia are lucky under many respects. On their territory they have a lot of opportunities to add school education with interesting and motivating experiences. Pescia is an ancient town that dates back to Roman times. Both in the centre and in the countryside many monuments from the past centuries witness the long history of this community: the Roman stone-paved road that crosses the countryside between Collodi and Pescia, Middle-Age churches, palaces or fortifications along the Via Francigena and other ancients roads, century-aged paper mills that originated both contemporary factories and a museum of paper history, the magnificent Baroque Villa and Giardino Garzoni. Culture in Pescia is not only from the past: the town public library is a rich one as for a community of about 18.000 people, thanks both to purchase policy and donations from private, family libraries. It has a children’s section that is constantly updated with new publications and is made even more attractive by the activities that the volunteer association for reading encouragement “Il Grillo Parlante (the Talking Cricket)” organizes: last but not at all least, Pinocchio and his park wait for Pescia schoolchildren just some kilometres (or some hundred metres, it depends which school you go to...) away, and offer pupils and teachers from Pescia schools free didactic visits.

Principal Giurlani says: “I try to give our teachers all possible opportunities to improve their professional quality, in order to provide children with the best educational environment. In the last decade our schools managed to take part in several projects that aim to update and improve teachers’ capability. Our teachers enthusiastically commit themselves in such activities, though they imply a lot of extra work. A limit is set by the increasing scarcity of financial means for schools. That is why institutionally supported projects such as P.IN.O.K.I.O. are vital for us”.

In Pescia schools these opportunities create a very lively environment, further stimulated in recent years by the increasing presence of children with an immigrant, non-Italian background. Their specific educational demands have started new experiences in teaching and learning. Teachers and decision-makers have been discussing and testing new models of relationship with schoolchildren’s families too. That is why the proposal from the Collodi Foundation to take part in the P.IN.O.K.I.O. project was accepted with enthusiasm: a coordinated group of pre- and primary State schools (in Italian: 2° Circolo Didattico) under the direction of principal Ms Francesca Giurlani stepped in since April, 2010. P.IN.O.K.I.O. project activities have officially

In the past years, interesting projects with intercultural outlines have been organized, based on the territory knowledge and on cultural exchange. As we are talking about children aged 3-11, narration and fairy tales were the core of many activities. A meeting for pupils, teachers and families in Pinocchio Park, with Italian and non-Italian parents performing games, tale-telling, simple cooking with and to children, has been the first of such occasion. Others followed: Il castello di Rozafa (Rozafa Castle) is an activity based on a traditional tale from Albania and leading to the discovery of castles in all countries. Pescia di mille colori (Multicoloured Pescia) is a map of the town that primary school pupils designed with highlights on what are – according to them - the most crucial (useful, interesting, or just beautiful) spots in town, and instructions or comments in 7 different languages, all of them spoken in schoolchildren’s families: Arabian, Chi-

nese, English, French, German, Polish, Rumanian. All these projects included moments when families got involved somehow. For some parents they have been the first occasion when they got in touch with their children’s scholastic environment not out of bureaucratic reasons. “Such a project as P.IN.O.K.I.O. allows children to be protagonists in the educational process – Ms Giurlani says, enhances intercultural communication between them and helps communication with families with different backgrounds. At the same time, teachers acquire instruments to face ever-changing cultural contexts and educational demands with knowledge and skills they already have and consider a standard in their teaching work (children’s narrations, basic computer competence and instruments) as starting point. Their past experience is valuable in the trainers’ and in their own eyes; on that basis, in P.IN.O.K.I.O. framework they build new didactic instruments, and guide pupils in the discovery of new means to express their creativity and communicate. The key competence scheme as defined by EU helps us to focus on specific aspects of children’s development”. Since their training (September-November 2010) teachers have started testing P.IN.O.K.I.O. methodology and instruments in their classes. Pinocchio and Pippi Longstocking are among the characters and stories that have been chosen to start testing creative narrations with blogs, movies, e-books. Some of the first results can be seen on the project website www.pinokioproject.eu. Since January, 2011 creativity labs and intercultural workshop have been taking place according to the project agenda, while the school management and the Collodi Foundation are evaluating the possibility of a closing event that might reinforce the project results and divulgate them in the local community.

In Pescia the P.IN.O.K.I.O project involves 17 teachers from 6 schools, 13 classes/sections, 314 pupils from 4 years old to 11 years old.
