Two on tour TENNIS Warren Thomson TWO of Central Australia’s young talented tennis players will be out to improve their ranking by playing in interstate tournaments. Jake Johan begins his campaign today in the Gosford Junior Open while Tom Zaleski will be playing for some early success in the new year when he plays in the Albury Grass Court Challenge as well as a few tournaments in Wodonga. Tennis Alice Springs manager Matt Roberts said: ‘‘It’s great that these kids are touring to try and improve their national rankings. ‘‘We should have a lot more players touring

around this time next year. ‘‘Tom did really well at the Albury Grass Courts Tournament and he will be out to protect his ranking when he plays.’’ Alice Springs-based professional George Shepheard got a pay day and a boost to his career best national ranking after making the quarter finals of the singles and doubles of the Gosford AMT Silver #4. Tom Clements in action

TOM Clements, and his NT Strike teammates, are on their way to compete in the Australian Country Cricket Championships being held in Geelong. It’s Clements’ first NT representative duties since the 28-year-old was part of the NT under-17 and under-19 national carnival teams. and he is looking forward to every aspect of the event. He said: ‘‘I’m looking forward to playing on different grounds and some that are a bit more batsman-friendly. ‘‘Some of the fields will be smaller and the wickets will be hard and fast and I look forward to playing against some quality opposition. ‘‘I’m also looking forward to the twoday games as they are a bit more up my alley than twenty20 cricket.’’ Most players usually can’t wait for the first game of a tournament and Clements is no exception as he gets to meet a mate who will be his opponent on the day. He said; ‘‘In our first game we get to play against East Asia Pacific that has players from Vanuatu, Fiji and Samoa and I’m looking forward to it because I get to play against a former colleague I worked with when I was at the Vanuatu Cricket Association.’’ Clements has been in good touch so far this season, scoring 410 runs with an average of 82 and taking 18 wickets, and hopes his good form with bat and ball continues throughout the tournament. He said: ‘‘My batting form has been better than last season as well as my bowling. It’s been good that we get many players come to Federal cricket training. It has gone really well and helped improve us all individually. ‘‘Our (Strike) coach David King indicated I would be picked as a bowler and bat between five and eight.’’ Clements is the only Central Australian in the final 13-man team. NT Strike’s first game is on Sunday.
