REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2018–2019

ONE CONNECTION AT A TIME The mission of Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital is to improve the health and wellbeing of our community. We value partnership, kindness, and service to our patients and we believe the path to achieving our mission lies in making one personal connection at a time.

Dear Friends, APD is getting very good at managing change. This past year saw significant integration occur with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health (D-HH). Most notably, we now share an electronic health record with DartmouthHitchcock Medical Center and Cheshire Medical Center, giving patients a unified record with secure access to health management tools. We have also integrated many administrative functions with the D-HH system. At the same time, APD retains its personal touch and remains nimble in embracing opportunities. Thanks to philanthropic supporters like you, we were able to invest in new medical equipment both in the hospital and Multi-Specialty Clinic.

We were also able to upgrade our physical campus and thus improve the experience of our patients. We are also working more closely with APD Lifecare and its senior-living facilities, The Woodlands and Harvest Hill, to improve the quality of life for our residents. As we all know, the opioid crisis has deeply affected New Hampshire and northern New England. Philanthropic support has made it possible for APD to make important changes in how we deliver primary care to our patients who struggle with substance use disorder. You will also read about how initiatives like our Nurse Residency Program help APD attract a high-quality nursing staff which increasingly is a challenge for hospitals in our area. Ultimately what makes APD special can be attributed to you, our donors and volunteers listed in this report. Our fundraising efforts posted healthy results this past year—a 17% increase over the previous year—and we extend our heartfelt thanks to you for making it happen. Change can be invigorating. On behalf of APD, please accept my appreciation for all you’ve done to support us this past year. With appreciation,

Susan E. Mooney, MD, MS, FACOG President and Chief Executive Officer 3

Investing in Technology to Serve Our Patients eD-H: Our desire to deliver a unified electronic health record to patients was realized in May of 2019. eD-H gives patients online access to free and secure health management tools and digital communication with their care team. MRI: APD installed the technologically advanced Aera 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) unit in a newly constructed Hospital suite. The MRI delivers increased comfort to our patients and diagnostic confidence to referring providers. TIMS: APD now has a state of the art TIMS unit that records intricate details of chewing and swallowing. We are one of only three hospitals in the U.S. with a TIMS unit. It records the entire barium swallow study at 30 images per second for immediate review, shedding light on what actually happens and what could be causing difficulty for patients. MAMMOGRAPHY: APD invested in the Hologic Genius™ 3D Mammography™ SmartCurve™ to ensure fewer callbacks, increased comfort, and more precise mammograms. 7

Nurse Residency Programs Are Transformational A nursing career is a calling. At APD, the nurse residency program (NRP) helps recent graduates transition into clinical practice. It serves as an opportunity to hone critical-thinking and evidence-based decision making skills. The NRP complements an orientation program by: • advancing communication skills and reinforcing organizational policies, • creating professional connectivity among nurses to ensure that culture and values are shared, • fostering exploration of what it means to be a nurse through case review. Nurse education addresses the high demand in the Upper Valley region for qualified nurses, and APD’s robust nursing program is strengthened by your support.

Addressing Substance Use Disorder In response to the growing opioid crisis, APD deepened its commitment to fighting the problem on several fronts this past year. One common treatment for substance use disorder is medication-assisted treatment (MAT), which combines the use of medications with counseling. APD expanded its MAT program to all Primary Care providers in late 2017. In addition, two social workers joined the MAT team, and a new position at APD was created to help coordinate the hospital’s response to this complex crisis. Equally important, APD expanded its collaboration with Headrest, a local nonprofit that provides addiction-recovery services. To help support and evaluate the expansion of services, APD received a $150,000 grant from the Foundation for Healthy Communities.

LIFECARE Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health

$500,000 Gift for Solar Panels at The Woodlands The Woodlands will soon become much greener. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor to Lifecare this past year, The Woodlands will be receiving an array of solar panels, which will be installed in the coming months. The gift accomplishes the dual goals of making The Woodlands more environmentally friendly and cutting monthly utility costs. “This gift is absolutely transformational,” said APD Lifecare Executive Director Cindy Jerome. “It will certainly help us save money, but more importantly this gift will instill a sense of pride in our community for leading the way toward a greener future.”

Our Donors Charitable giving directly touches every area of APD. Individuals, businesses, and foundations continue to select APD as a beneficiary of their giving. This past year, 301 donors contributed $556,357 to the Hospital’s annual and capital funds—marking a 17% increase over the previous year. We are gratified by this strong gesture of support and the vote of confidence in APD that it represents. denotes 3+ years consecutive giving.

Giving is in Their Nature As if our Medical Staff doesn’t already give enough, they came through with flying colors in support of the APD Annual Fund. Their giving total tripled this past year –from $6,733 in 2018 to $20,220 in 2019. Thanks go especially to the triumvirate of John Houde, MD; Erin McNeely, MD; and Phil Collins, MD who led the fundraising effort.
