Performance Notes

Set- up All three instruments should be lightly amplified. In addition, a contact microphone is attached onto the Tam-tam. Levels for this microphone may need to be adjusted during the performance, depending on the action produced on the instrument. General Quarter Tones (from lower to higher):

For reasons of practicality, only quarter-tone flats and sharps are used. Default playing mode is without vibrato.

– dynamics in quotation marks indicate the force of action in the instances where the sonic outcome does not match the action required.

Flute

– mixture of tone and breath sound.

– (used together with the closed emb. indication) breath sound with lips completely covering the embouchure, sounds a major 7th below the written pitch.

– tongue ram. sounds a major 7th below the written pitch.

– altering intonation by adjusting the embouchure, ca. quarter-tone higher or lower.

– inhale and exhale, respectively.

Violin Preparation: From measure 55 until the end, the violin is to be prepared with two cigarette filters inserted between 1st and 2nd, and 3rd and 4th strings, approximately 1 inch (~2.5 centimeters) away from the bridge. Always play in the area between the filter and the bridge, unless indicated otherwise. In the slow sustaining tones, aim for relatively stable multiphonic sounds, adjusting bow position and pressure accordingly. In the more active passages, the result will be a more unpredictable distortion of the natural timbre of the violin. Bow positions: SP – sul ponticello ASP – alto sul ponticello (almost on the bridge) ST – sul tasto AST – alto sul tasto ORD – ordinario - bow directly on the bridge, with left hand muting the strings. Arrows to and from the notehead indicate the gradual movement to or away from the indicated bow position.

– granular sound: increased bow pressure and slow bow speed, creating a scratching sound. The passage in at the end between, where the bow pressure alternates between flautando and over-pressure bowing, loosely following the graphic indications in the score.

– clef for playing behind the bridge (plucking the second string behind the bridge in this instance).

– half-harmonic: left hand pressure somewhere between the light harmonic touch and a normal stopped tone, creating a noisy and grainy mixture of both. A word about harmonics: Apart from their traditional use, ‘harmonic’ pressure is used at unusual nodes to produce complex sounds that will not correspond to a specific overtone (for example, the ‘touch major-second’ harmonics occurring in violoncello in the second measure). One can think of it as a spectrum from a stopped note, through a half-harmonic, to a full harmonic finger pressure.

Percussion List of Instruments (Everything set on a table––preferable wooden): Egg Shaker, Chinese Gong, Large Woodblock, Frame Drum, Tam-tam (with contact microphone attached), Sandpaper (on the table, unless otherwise indicated), grains (such as rice, to be poured on to various surfaces), metal chain (to be rolled off the table). List of Beaters Wooden Chopsticks, Reibestock (friction stick)

C – center E – edge

– dead stroke

– scrape

Starting in measure 56, the percussionist is asked to ‘play’ the contact microphone. With the hand, gently touch, tap, brush, or rub the microphone, loosely following the indicated part. In measures 107-108, lightly drag Reibestock on the microphone.

All other explanations are indicated in the score.
