George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s play, The Man Who Came to Dinner opened at the Music Box Theatre on October 16, 1939 and closed in 1941 after an astonishing 739 performances. Monty Woolley originated the role of the quick-witted and obnoxious, Sheridan Whiteside. However, few people know of the real-life inspiration for Whiteside.
