THE HISTORY OF FASHION WEEK “In 1943, the first New York Fashion Week was held, with one main purpose: to distract attention from French fashion during World War II, when workers in the fashion industry were unable to travel to Paris.” A fashion week is a fashion industry event, lasting approximately one week, which allows fashion designers, brands or “houses” to display their latest collections in runway shows and buyers and the media to take a look at the latest trends. Most importantly, these events let the industry know what’s “in” and what’s “out” for the season. The most prominent fashion weeks are held in the four fashion capitals of the world: Milan, Paris, New York, and London. Some other important fashion weeks in the world are held in Amsterdam, Bangalore, Barcelona, Mexico City, Boston, Buenos Aires, Cleveland, Copenhagen, Dubai, Jakarta, Los Angeles, Lisbon Madrid, Manila, Rome, São Paulo, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Sydney, Tbilisi, Seoul, Tokyo, Toronto and Hong Kong. In 1943, the first New York Fashion Week was held, with one main purpose: to distract attention from French fashion during World War II, when workers in the fashion industry were unable to travel to Paris. This was an opportune moment, as for centuries designers in America had been thought to be reliant on the French for inspiration. The fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert organized an event she called ‘Press Week’ to showcase American designers for fashion journalists, who had previously ignored their works. The Press Week was a success, and, as a result, magazines like Vogue (which were normally filled with French designs) began to feature more and more American innovations. Until 1994, shows were held in different locations, such as hotels, or lofts. Eventually, after a structural accident at a Michael Kors show, the event moved to Bryant Park, behind the
New York Public Library, where it remained until 2010, when the shows relocated to Lincoln Center. However, long before Lambert, there were fashion shows throughout America. In 1903, a New York City shop called Ehrich Brothers put on what is thought to have been the country’s first fashion show to lure middle-class females into the store. By 1910, many big department stores were holding shows of their own. It is likely that American retailers saw that they were called ‘fashion parades’ in Paris couture salons and decided to use the idea. These parades were an effective way to promote stores, and improved their status. By the 1920s, the fashion show had been used by retailers up and down the country. They were staged, and often held in the shop’s restaurant during lunch or teatime. These shows were usually more theatrical than those of today, heavily based upon a single theme, and accompanied with a narrative commentary. The shows were hugely popular, enticing crowds in their thousands – crowds so large, that stores in New York in the fifties had to obtain a license to have live models.

HISTORY F OF FASHION WEEK Fashion week happens twice a year in the major fashion capitals of the world: Milan, Paris, New York and London.
MAMi Magazine 16
ashion week happens twice a year in the major fashion capitals of the world: Milan, Paris, New York and London. Fashion weeks are held several months in advance of the season to allow the press and buyers a chance to preview fashion designs for the following season. From January through April designers showcase their autumn and winter collections. Fashion week for spring and summer is held from September through November. This is also to allow time for retailers to arrange to purchase or incorporate the designers into their retail marketing. The latest innovations in dress designs are showcased by renowned fashion designers during these fashion weeks, and all these latest collections are covered in magazines such as Vogue.
There are two major seasons per year - Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer. For womenswear, the Autumn/Winter shows always start in New York in February and end in Paris in March. Spring/Summer shows start in New York in September and end in Paris in October. Menswear Autumn/Winter shows start in January in Milan for typically less than a week followed by another short week in Paris. Menswear Spring/Summer shows are done in June. Womenswear haute couture shows typically happen in Paris a week after the Menswear Paris shows. For the first time, womenswear haute couture was also shown in Singapore, during its haute couture Women’s Fashion Week in October 2011. This was the first time womenswear haute couture shows were held outside of Paris. More and more designers have shown inter-seasonal collections between the traditional Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer seasons. These collections are usually more commercial than the main season collections and help shorten the customer’s wait for new season clothes. The inter-seasonal collections
are Resort/Cruise (before Spring/Summer) and Pre-Fall (before Autumn/Winter). There is no fixed schedule for these shows in any of the major fashion capitals but they typically happen three months after the main season shows. Some designers show their inter-seasonal collections outside their home city. For example, Karl Lagerfeld has shown his Resort and Pre-Fall collections for Chanel in cities such as Moscow, Los Angeles and Monte Carlo instead of Paris. Many designers also put on presentations as opposed to traditional shows during Resort and Pre-Fall either to cut down costs or because they feel the clothes can be better understood in this medium. Some fashion weeks can be genre-specific, such as a Miami Fashion Week (swimwear), Rio Summer (swimwear), Prêt-a-Porter (ready-to-wear) Fashion Week, Couture (one-of-a-kind designer original) Fashion Week and Bridal Fashion Week, while Portland (Oregon, USA) Fashion Week shows some eco-friendly designers.
MAMi Magazine 17
Milan, Paris, New York and London each host a fashion week twice a year with New York beginning each season and the other cities following in the aforementioned order.

DRINKIN THIS SPRING? HOPE NOT.. BUT JUST IN CASE. Do us all a favor (including yourself ) and party smart. Be responsible. Pace yourself if you choose to drink, and avoid hard alcohol or other drinks that are powerful and have fast effects. (And remember that drunks = easy targets.) Also be aware of alcohol poisoning. According to a University of Wisconsin study, 75 percent of college males and 43 percent of females reported being intoxicated on a daily basis during spring break. If you do decide to drink, know the liquor laws of wherever you’ll be vacationing. Drinking & driving is always a dangerous situation, so avoid this by having your safe mode of transportation home planned before you go out.

PLIGHT OF THE BISON photography by Teri Garrison
Americans overwhelmingly love bison as an iconic image of the West, a national survey out this week says they are largely clueless over the ecological plight these animals face.
t the turn of the 20th century there were just 100 wild bison left on the continent, down from 60 million. A concentrated conservation effort helped rebuild the animal’s numbers. One of the heroes of the animal’s rebound was Kalispell’s own Charles E. Conrad, who purchased 50 bison from a man in Pablo in 1900. The animals were brought to Wild Horse Island and then later moved north in the Flathead Valley, where they grazed at Smith Hill and just north of downtown Kalispell, where today’s Buffalo Hill Golf Course sits. After Conrad died in 1902, his wife kept the herd together and in 1908 she offered 37 buffalo to start the National Bison Range in Moiese. Today, there are more than 200,000 bison in domesticated private and commercial herds in the U.S. There are another 17,000 bison in mostly public herds, according to Bailey, but even those are falling victim to mixed genes and domestication. According to the Buffalo Field Campaign, a group working to protect wild buffalo, there are just 4,500 wild bison left.
Running Hard An orbiting helicopter and riders atop ATVs and on horseback provided quite the circus Thursday as they hazed buffalo that had sought greener pastures outside Yellowstone National Park to graze and birth calves on public and private land outside West Yellowstone, Mont. “They’re running hard,” NRDC Wildlife Advocate Matt Skoglund said, clutching the steering wheel. “They’ll push for miles and miles.” MAMi Magazine 36
MAMiMagazine The annual spring hazing of bison wintering in the Hebgen Lake area has been happening since 2000 under the Interagency Bison Management Plan. The plan calls for driving the bison back into Yellowstone National Park, less than 10 miles to the east, before May 15 to reduce the chance that they will transmit brucellosis to cattle. The disease causes pregnant females to abort their calves. However, to date, there never has been a documented case in the wild of a buffalo infecting a domestic cow with brucellosis.
Americans overwhelmingly love bison as an iconic image of the West, a national survey out this week says they are largely clueless over the ecological plight these animals face. While nearly three-quarters of the 2,000 people surveyed by the American Bison Society said they revere the shaggy animal and view them as an “extremely important living symbol of the American West,” less than 10 percent know how many bison remain in the country. While bison once numbered in the tens of millions and ranged all the way from Alaska to Mexico, today there are an estimated half-million bison left in the United States, according to the society. The vast majority of those live on private ranches, “with only about 9,000 plains bison considered free-ranging in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. An additional 7,000 free-ranging wood bison live in Canada.” Much like a Yellowstone buffalo jam, cars are halted on U.S. 287 as their occupants watch the show. One van is loaded with Natural Resources Defense Council staffers and a few reporters. The buffalo are chugging along parallel to the highway now. One bull huffs like a heavy smoker forced to run a marathon.

“An ultra luxurious chauffeur driven limousine evoking the glamor and sophistication of chauffeur driven cars in the past that has since been lost. “This vehicle is about being seen, but at the same time being invisible or an “Apparition” in the sense that you’re safely tucked away in its palatial and private interior.”
ROLLS ROYCE APPARITION CONCEPT T
here’s concepts, and then there’s concepts that turn into production cars. This is just a concept though and will only ever remain as one. It’s called the Rolls-Royce Apparition Concept and you are seeing correctly; the driver sits outside while passengers are enclosed in the back.
In all fairness, it is quite interesting to behold. Although there are a lot of boxy, straight-cut shapes going on throughout the entire length of the car, the overall platform is stirring. It offers loads of ‘you can’t do that’, which is what concepts are meant to be all about.
The creation was developed by Jeremy Westerlund while he was studying art, and his aim was to design something similar to how they did it in the old days; driver up front, exposed outside, while the passengers are cooped inside at the back – like a horse and carriage type arrangement.
Much of the car is based on the Rolls-Royce Phantom, in terms of initial design, carrying over a similar front end. From the windscreen things get a little different, as there is no windscreen. The bonnet just extends all the way over to the bootlid in one seamless stretch.
MAMi Magazine 42
MAMiMagazine It also features mahogany-encrusted wheels, traditional Rolls-Royce front grille and a low and long presence which would measure over seven metres in length if developed. Jeremy Westerlund recently summed up the concept, saying that it’s: “An ultra luxurious chauffeur driven limousine evoking the glamor and sophistication of chauffeur driven cars in the past that has since been lost.
“This vehicle is about being seen, but at the same time being invisible or an “Apparition” in the sense that you’re safely tucked away in its palatial and private interior.” The model seen here is just a 1:4 scale version, and as mentioned, it is unlikely it will ever be turned into anything that could be bought from your local Rolls-Royce dealer.
