Opportunity Program

The Alfred State Opportunity Program has been created with your academic success and personal pride in educational achievement as its primary goals. Individual pacing of course work plus personal assistance are just two of the ways to achieve these goals. Some recent graduates are pursuing careers as nurses, bank and restaurant managers, counselors, industrial designers, and engineering technicians. Others are seeking advanced degrees.

The ASOP Program We would like to introduce you to the Alfred State Opportunity Program (ASOP). You may be eligible for ASOP if you show potential for academic success but do not meet all entrance requirements for your chosen program of study. The Alfred State Opportunity Program is an extended program which may take you up to six semesters (three years) to complete an associate's degree. Your course work will be paced to enhance your chances for success. The program allows for lighter course loads, college preparatory and developmental courses (as needed), and other support services. If you are a full‑time student, you will be scheduled for at least 12 credit hours per semester. Your first semester schedule might include:

Course

Hours per week in class and/or lab

English 3 Math 3 College & Life Skills and/or Academic Literacy** 2‑5 Social, Physical, and/or Life Science 3‑6 AND/OR Major-specific course(s) 2‑6 12‑17 Total Hours* *Students pursuing an engineering technology degree can expect to be in class/ lab for 16‑24 hours a week. **College & Life Skills course is dependent on major you are entering; academic literacy is dependent on placement results.

Personal Assistance Personal assistance is available and may include: ■ Counseling for any concern ■ Ongoing academic advising for scheduling, goal setting, and program information ■ Orientation to acquaint you with services and activities available at the College ■ Tutoring in most courses If you are notified that you need to take placement exams, early testing is strongly recommended to assure proper course placement and course availability. Orientation is also strongly recommended to acquaint you with areas of the College.

Financial Aid Many of your major college expenses may be paid by financial aid grants (awards which do not have to be repaid) and/or loans (borrowed money which must be repaid with interest). Your eligibility for funding will be determined after you: ■ File the FAFSA electronically at www.fafsa.gov. ■ List SUNY College of Technology at Alfred on the FAFSA with Federal ID code number 002854. ■ Print and keep a copy of your electronic FAFSA application. ■ If you are a NYS resident, submit the TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) electronically by going to www.tapweb.org. ■ Follow the instructions enclosed with your financial aid award letter to electronically accept or decline your aid as well as apply for federal loans.

Keep copies of completed applications and all college correspondence for your files.

Student Life You will be offered a variety of extracurricular choices to broaden your educational experiences and to make your college years memorable ones: ■ A residence hall style best suited to you (unless you commute daily from your home). ■ Intercollegiate athletics contests or intramural sports. ■ A wide selection of lectures, concerts, musical and dramatic productions. ■ Special interest clubs.
