What some of our people say… After I got into the industry as an 18 year old trainee, I spent time in every branch position from yard through to Branch Manager. I have also worked in a regional and national sales role travelling from Scotland to Exeter and have managed the London regional sales office. In every role I feel the key factor to me being successful was strong customer service skills, listening to the customer and building our offer around what they needed, this helped build long term relationships. I still get a buzz from meeting customers, discussing their projects and taking orders. John Wallace, Area Director London I joined the industry when I was 17 as a Yard Assistant. I absolutely loved interaction with customers, was good at it and this helped me to move on. When I worked as a Sales representative, I enjoyed the feeling that people buy product because they trusted me and believed in what I am selling.  Now as a manager I use the same philosophy - it’s all about trust and people relationships. I love developing other people - sharing my knowledge with my team and helping them to progress. Jamie Griffin, Branch Manager Fulham I started as a yard labourer, but I was fortunate to meet a person who changed my life and ignited my passion for selling and great customer service (note: not just good customer service – everyone does that). Sales is not only about chasing and price battling, but it is all about listening: the real skill is understanding your customer, providing solutions and adding value. It’s a common sense industry where you can start from the bottom, but with good work ethic and right attitude you can get to the top. Mick Feleppa, Sales Director for London Region

What some of our people say… I joined the industry as a Management Trainee with Jewson’s parent company at the age of 18. During this time I gained experience of many of the various group companies but decided to make my career with Jewson. I started with Jewson as an Internal Sales person. I then spent some time out on the road, followed by a spell as Assistant Branch Manager but my goal was always to run my own branch and I was given the opportunity to do this at the age of 24 on a green field site in Haringey. From my experience as a Branch Manager I would highlight the importance of being able to develop a team of staff who are loyal to you as well as the Company as a whole. Any Manager is only as good as their team and I’ve been fortunate over the years to work with some excellent staff - watching these team members progress and develop their own careers is one of the many rewards of running a branch for Jewson. Of equal importance is the ability to understand the role of your Branch as a business within the local community and look at everything from your customers’ point of view - after all your customers are your business. Sam Williamson, Branch Manager Watford As a university graduate entering straight into the Builders merchant industry, I couldn’t have felt more of a stranger. I knew absolutely nothing. However, my ambition, commitment and hunger to succeed helped me continually develop within Jewson. My adventure started as a management trainee in a small branch, followed by a promotion to ABM after 18 months and handed my first branch manager role 18 months later. A day In Jewson is never the same, so there’s no fear of boredom. As I say to my staff, give everything a 100% and strive to be the best. What more can anyone ask for? Burhan Orhan, Branch Manager Acton I started in the industry as a credit control temp in 1998 moving up through telesales, ABM and then becoming BM in 2005 with an independent merchant. I was lucky that I was pushed and my potential spotted enabling me to progress quickly within the industry. Working for Jewson is providing me with even more opportunities for training and progression. I really enjoy the interaction with customers and staff and the fact that the job is so varied with no two days being the same. It’s not a desk bound job which, coupled with the daily challenges, keeps me on my toes. Another great thing about Jewson and Saint-Gobain is that in such a large company there’s a huge network of people for support when required. Donna Porter, Branch Manager Twickenham
