Resilient Systems and Communications Security and resiliency is a critical component of communication systems, information technology systems, and industrial control systems. As the environments in which these types of systems operate become increasingly malicious, security becomes an increasingly important design goal. In this context, the field of resiliency broadly investigates identification and mitigation of both malicious and nonmalicious faults in complex systems. Technical areas of research include cybersecurity, formal methods, information security, network security, com-

puter security, control theory, computer architecture, programming languages, and power systems. Virginia Tech takes an applied formal methods approach to system resilience. Properties and functions can be modeled and theorem provers can be used to validate the models. The approach applies formal models, methods, and model based reasoning, analysis, and synthesis techniques to hardware, software, and system design. Core research in these areas include software synthesis for provable embedded system security; identification of software bugs, malicious intent, and latent logic; and security of industrial control systems, to include power and smartgrid systems.

Data to Decisions The “Digital Universe� represents the exponential growth of data generated, processed, stored, and consumed. As the volume of data increases, so too does the complexity of underlying systems over which that data flows. Within a national security context, numerous big data challenges must be solved in order to expedite the process of moving from data to decisions.

Emphasis of research focuses on abstraction of data into spatially and temporally invariant information spaces where information physics can be applied. This general approach has wide applications across national security mission. Core technical areas in this domain include statistics, data mining, machine learning, knowledge discovery, visualization, high performance computing, and cloud computing.

The Hume Center’s core expertise lies at the intersection of data mining and high performance computing. Data to Decisions leader Harold Trease examines the digital signatures that allow him to solve big data challenges through information physics.


Signals Intelligence Signals Intelligence broadly covers the extraction of information from digital transmissions. The Hume Center’s core area of expertise in this domain is the development and implementation of advanced signal processing algorithms. Implementation expertise centers around use of software-defined radio (SDR) technology for efficient processing in heterogeneous compute-constrained environments. their performance and impact. The Hume Center leads research in autonomous optimization in SDR environments based on real-time environmental data. Core innovations in this area include sophisticated architectures for wideband signal processing, advanced scheduling algorithms in heterogeneous environments that include everything from dense multicore processors to FPGAs, and portable waveform design and implementation in these environments.
