6 Victoria Street Located in the heart of Nottingham this building has a long history dating back to the 1890s. Originally designed by Evans & Son Architects and built between 1895-97. It was then developed further, with the addition of two bays, by Thomas Bostock Whinney between 1920-21. T.B Whinney was an English Architect who became the chief Architect for Midlands Banks. The building became a registered grade II listed building in 1972.

The entrance utilises the large height of the existing building with a double height ceiling. Done to create a large and open entrance which does not consume too much of the available floor space. The entrance channels visitors through to the main corridor and staircase which is slowly revealed as people make their way through the entrance area.

The first gallery space which visitors will come across within the building, which also doubles as an event space with the adjoining cafe by removing the folding partition. With limited natural light this small space creates an intimate environment which can be manipulated for different displays.

Alex Page

Event Space/ Cafe A simple space which allows for a multitude of purposes, to ensure the proposal is flexible. Large enough to hold events while also ensuring that it is still a soft and welcoming environment to have a coffee when being used as a cafe.

Gallery 2 The largest gallery within the building, which also receives some of the most natural light from throughout the building. Within the gallery is a double height area, which is overlooked by the 2nd floor, allowing for flexibility of displays. Along with doors which allow for a private gallery space to be created this space is one of the most versatile within the building.

While designed as a gallery which links through the stairs, the spaces can be used individually if more galleries are required. Being on the font of the building both of theses spaces receive large amounts of natural light through the two floor to ceiling windows.

One of the smaller and naturally darker environments created throughout the building. With the entrance not being a stand out element which draws people in, the space relies on people wanting to explore the building to find what is a quiet, secluded and intimate space great for displaying certain work.

35

Gallery 5 is the only space throughout the building which does have an exterior window, but instead has two interior ones which overlook the double height void as well as the 1st floor walkway. By having minimal natural light, apart from through the entrance, the space can be fully controlled to be able to match the environment with the gallery use.

Construction - Exploded Isometric Predominately a timber construction which utilises 100mm x 50mm CLS timber to create stud partition walls which are load bearing throughout. These ensure the existing structure is not touched and damaged as the weight is full ground supported.
