Recycled Material Residence Spring 2012
Green building is going to be even more important in the near future. Learning how to reuse materials, derive materials straight from the site and minimize the amount of energy a building uses are important factors of green building. Our project was to design a residence using these aspects. This residence consists of rammed earth walls that are 2 feet thick and then covered with stucco to insulate the house. The rammed earth that is used for the walls comes from the earth excavated for the pool that the house wraps around. There is a prominent wind from the south east that the building takes advantage of with cross ventilation which causes it to cool down and allows it to minimize the amount of AC the house needs. The detached building that is the studio space helps cut down transportation costs by working on site. Having a separate studio space still gives the resident the feeling of going to work by leaving the house and going to a different building.
Row House Fall 2012
This row house is a blend of two houses on a lot measuring 100’ X 32’. The two houses are residences for two clients with different interests. The purple section of the house belongs to a bicycle racer with two young children. The yellow section of the house belongs to a young real estate developer. The house is designed with many different levels that have been pushed and pulled into and out of the two sides of the house. The two houses fit together like puzzle pieces that create a very interesting plan for the house overall. The back portion of the house is for the bicycle racer to design and build bikes to sell in his shop. The real estate developer has a maid that lives above the garage allowing her to have her own space away from the house while still living on the site.
Real Estate Developer A 30-year old single man who develops property downtown. He often entertains clients and investors and is a patron of the arts, with a large collection of modern art, mainly paintings, which he likes to display in his house. He has a big wardrobe and drives a nice car. He has a live-in domestic servant.
Bicycle Racer A 32 year-old amateur bike racer who custom builds bike frames in a shop located in his house. His retail is handled by a couple of bike shops in town and on the internet. He entertains an eclectic mix of friends and loves movies. He has two children in middle school.
Performance Place Spring 2013
While studying abroad in the town of Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy we were given the task of designing a performance venue for the town that would create a main meeting place for the people. We worked with the Italian architects that were assigned the project to aid us in our design. The idea behind this project was to give the town of Castiglion a central piazza near the train station. We did many site analyses of the train station and noticed that there is no community meeting place to wait for the train. We studied other Italian towns as we traveled and took ideas from them to create a piazza for the people to have an inviting place to come and wait for the train.
Austin Natatorium Fall 2013
Austin is known for its swimming culture and its urban culture. Our project was to design a natatorium that went along with this strong swimming culture. The Natatorium’s site is located in Austin, Texas on the East side of I-35 between 6th street and 5th street. The site has a 25 foot drop from 6th street to 5th street which creates a view of the skyline of down town Austin. Our project addressed the steep slope of the side by creating different levels with different purposes. As you progress thought out the site you are introduced to different areas like and indoor natatorium that can be used for public and competitive swimming, an indoor bath house for more leisure swimming, and an outdoor snack area.

Nigeria Hospital Fall 2014
A collaborative project with Real clients form Nigeria called the Thompson & Grace foundation and HKS Dallas and Orlando. We worked in parallel with HKS as they also design the hospital in Nigeria. We were given the master plan of the site from the graduate study at Texas A&M. Our Nigerian clients asked for a western style hospital that incorporated 4 basic things which are teaching, patient care, research and innovation. We were to design a basic form for the hospital and then design the patient tower. Our concept behind this design is based off of the quote “happy staff, Happy patients. We started thinking about what makes a hospital a hospital to try and change those aspects to make it seem less like a hospital. Our main thing that we found is that the patient rooms are the only places that really get light so we wanted to provide natural lighting to the hallways and staff working areas. We accomplished this by cantilevering the rooms off of the main building to allow light into the rooms and above the rooms to get into the hallways. We also have a central atrium that brings light 4 floors down the center of the building that will bring light into the nursing work areas.
