The Performers Jessica Grimes Clarinet, Zöe Matthews Viola, Charis Cheung Piano As winners of the Royal College of Music Douglas Whittaker Ensemble Prize, the Jacquin Trio has performed regularly in London and across the UK. The ensemble has been awarded a place on the Live Music Now Scheme 2011-13 and was shortlisted for the 56th Annual Park Lane Group young artist series. In December 2010 the trio reached the finals of the 19th International Chamber Music Competition in Thessaloniki, Greece where it was awarded an ‘honorary mention’ by the jury/ Since forming in September 2009, some performing highlights include recitals at St James’s Piccadilly, the Deal Festival 2011, performing at the Schumann Festival at the Royal College of Muisc in March 2009 and being named semi-finalists of the Royal Over-seas League Competition. The trio has studied with Nigel Clayton, Timothy Lines, Simon Rowland-Jones, Suzie Meszaros, Janet Hilton and Ruth Nye. Robert Smith Trumpet, Jason Evans Trumpet, Elise Campbell Horn Ross Learmonth Trombone, Matthew Blunt Tuba Total Brass was formed in 2009 for a Royal Academy of Music project which aimed to prepare, perform and record Peter Maxwell Davies’s notoriously difficult Brass Quintet in concert with the composer present. After excellent reviews especially from Maxwell Davies himself, they decided to continue as a group establishing itself as a regular ensemble. Total Brass has since gone on to receive high commendation at a number of Royal Academy Competitions. The Quintet is comprised of current students the Academy and members include past principals of the Nation Youth Orchestras of Great Britain and The National Youth Brass Band of Scotland in addition to others who regularly freelance with renowned professional orchestras. Two members won the Jon Solomon Brass Prize in consecutive years. They were recently featured live on BBC Radio 3 as part of the In tune Christmas broadcast performing alongside the Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge and the Barbirolli Quartet. Total Brass aims to give a total overview of brass quintet music performing works from a diverse range of periods, genres and styles to audience who may never have experienced such an ensemble before.
St Martin-in-the-Fields has welcomed talented musicians to this central London platform for over 60 years - from highly acclaimed young soloists, to choirs from all over the world; from promising new ensembles, to established professionals. This tradition is supported by the generosity of our performers as well as our audiences. Whilst these concerts are free to all, for those able to give, a suggested donation of £3.50 would be greatly appreciated to help fund all aspects of the work at St Martin’s.
