Tomi McCutchen Parrish Tomi McCutchen Parrish is a tenured instructor in the UTM Department of Communications. She also is the department’s internship coordinator as well as the coordinator of the UTM Office of Student Publications, which houses The Pacer student newspaper, The Spirit magazine and BeanSwitch literary and visual arts magazine. An alumnae of UTM, Ms. Parrish pledged the Epsilon Iota chapter of SAI in 1981 and was named Best Pledge. She later served as social chairman and secretary. Entering UTM as a music education major with clarinet as her instrument, Ms. Parrish was a leader in color guard and helped teach band camps each summer. Though Ms. Parrish later changed her major to journalism, she retained music as her minor and won the position of field commander for the UTM band her fifth year in college. She was also sponsored by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia in the 1982 Miss UTM Pageant. Ms. Parrish no longer plays clarinet, but was a faithful Westview Band Parent for the seven years that her son played trumpet and is a huge fan of the music that her son writes and performs as the bassist for Kings Avail, a post-hardcore band based in Paris. National Objectives

History The first meeting of the Sigma Alpha Iota petitioning group at the University of Tennessee at Martin was held on February 13, 1968. Those members present were Pat Harrison, Glenda Rock, Dola Nowell, Donna Ellis, Peggy Eskew, Mary Rained, Barbara Baumgardner, Rita Winter, Mary Layman, Page Tomlinson, Elaine Turnipseed, Linda Walker, Alice Thompson, Anita White, Kay Fields, Jean Lamer, Sue Gross, Joan Dobson, Carol Eck, and Harriet Fulton. These members worked hard at the meeting and at many others that followed during the next year. Not only did they work, but they also dreamed of a day when they would be able to say that they were members of a newly installed chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota. On March 1, 1969 their dream finally became a reality; Epsilon Iota was installed as the 153rd college chapter
of Sigma Alpha Iota by Lillian Wilder, the National Vice President for Counselors and Directors, as a special service held in Nashville, TN. This day marked the end of a year’s hard work and the beginning of an era in the fraternity service and community projects. The first full year of Epsilon Iota’s life, the year of 1969-70 was a successful one, and its 13 chapter members
laid the foundation for the chapter we know now. These girls became very busy with their first project to round up “helpers.” On November 4, 1969, Mrs. Tanner, Mrs. Carpenter, Mrs. Dykes, Mrs. Vaughn, Mrs. Sublette, Mrs. Moore, and Mrs. Counce were initiated as the first seven patroness members of Epsilon Iota.
