The Benefits Of PCI Pavement Training In pavement condition training, you'll learn about the PCI, or Pavement Condition Index. It's a rating system for the condition of a section of road. The PCI was created by the US Army Corps of Engineers, and features a scale of 0 to 100: 100 denotes perfect status and 0 denotes extremely bad status. Qualified individuals must visually inspect the section of road and take note of not just how even or regular the road feels when riding on it, when completing a PCI survey, but also the various flaws seen in the pavement and how consequential those flaws may be. A typically bumpy ride, lengthwise or crosswise cracks or cracks in edges, areas that droop or sag, areas that are swollen, craters or pits, ruts, previously installed patches that have deteriorated, reflective cracks (cracks that occur in conjunction with a joint or edge underneath the pavement), block cracks (connected cracks that form a rectangular shape), and fatigue or alligator cracking (a network of cracks resembling alligator skin), are several of the kinds of flaws that surveyors look for in asphalt roads. Slippage cracks (curved cracks resulting from vehicles turning or braking), shoving (ripples, also known as wash-boarding), bleeding (when the sticky part of asphalt pavement separates and rises to the road surface), lack of cover aggregate (meaning imbedded gravel), polished aggregate (the imbedded gravel has become too smooth), and uneven lanes or shoulders that drop off too drastically are some other common flaws. After completing the visual survey on the road, workers add the information to a database. So that road conditions can be tracked, new PCI data for a specific section of road is usually added to the database each year. This practice allows officials to see both the current state of the street along with how much it has worsened over time. Conducting annual PCIs in a community offers valuable data that makes it easier for officials to knowledgeably allocate funding to the roads that need repair the most. It also allows them to see which repairs are immediately crucial and which can wait. The data will also support the practice of developing plans for preventative upkeep on roads. Officials may also see what road building materials and which road models have the most longevity to handle decades of traffic and weather. The PCI is best used in conjunction with other pavement condition assessment methods. A subjective tool in that it depends on visual inspection by qualified surveyors is the PCI. Flaws that are evident on the surface of the road will be focused on. For this reason, the extent of the damage might be hard to assess from the surface appearance alone, even though it does identify damaged areas that are in need of repair. Determining the cause can sometimes require additional assessment equipment, and some of the flaws are caused by damage that lies beneath the surface of the road. There are times that there's deterioration underneath the pavement that haven't shown signs on the surface. It does help prioritize which areas are most in need of maintenance and repair, but the PCI is extremely useful in that it allows surveyors to gain a wide-reaching assessment of the road's general condition.
