Message from Mack Rhoades

T

hank you for your generosity to our student-athletes and loyal support through the Baylor Bear Foundation. It has been a great year for Baylor Athletics as our student-athletes continue to make us proud in competition, in the community and in the classroom.

As we look ahead to the upcoming Bear Foundation membership year, I have tasked our leadership team with exploring current processes and policies to ensure we are industry leaders in every aspect of the department – from student-athlete experience to resource development. This includes the Bear

Foundation. In looking at our operations, we believe we have found places where we can improve in an effort to make your annual membership less cumbersome to manage. We believe that Baylor Athletics stands above the competition in many respects, but we are also prepared to change and evolve where necessary to provide loyal fans, dedicated coaches and deserving student-athletes the best experience possible. We cannot do this without our faithful Bear Foundation members. You are the lifeblood of Baylor Athletics. No championship, no achievement, no student-athlete success story is possible, without you. Thank you for your continued support and belief in the vision that guides everything we do: Preparing Champions for Life. Sincerely,

Mack B. Rhoades, IV Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

No team or individual is successful without a process: Ours rests on four pillars: Academic Achievement, Athletic Success, Character Formation and Spiritual Development Academic Achievement

While success on the field of play is extremely important, we also embrace the deep value of a Baylor education. Learning how to study, manage time, and think critically, equips studentathletes for a successful future. This robust educational experience helps students define their life’s calling and provides the practical tools necessary to excel in their chosen field.

Athletic Success

Successful athletic programs build a sense of community by creating an opportunity to gather and support a common goal. In the process of developing successful teams, we are teaching students how to be successful. The principles of hard work, discipline, teamwork and a positive attitude are qualities that will serve our students beyond their days as competitive athletes.

Character Formation

Time as an NCAA student-athlete presents unique opportunities to grow as an individual, even beyond academics and athletics. Whether its serving the community, developing leadership skills on a student advisory committee, or learning to identify unique skills and strengths, student-athletes will gain tools that can lead to a lifetime of service and success.

Spiritual Development

Baylor University was founded upon a deeply-rooted tradition of faith, which must be woven into the fabric of everything we do. Sports ministry has grown into an essential area of development offered to Baylor student-athletes. We have an established foundation that creates opportunities for students to live out their faith in tangible ways.

T

he Bear Foundation has existed for more than 70 years, with a singular purpose: to provide scholarship funds for Baylor’s student-athletes and to support and promote the interest and welfare of Baylor Athletics.

As the primary fundraising arm for Baylor Athletics, the Bear Foundation accounts for approximately 20 percent of the department’s annual revenue. Private giving from Baylor supporters makes a significant and tangible difference in the experiences and opportunities offered to Baylor studentathletes on an annual basis and allows Baylor to remain competitive with other programs in the Big 12 and around the nation. Year in and year out, this giving sustains Baylor Athletics and lets our student-athletes, coaches and staff know that they truly have the support of the Baylor Family.

Investing in Student-Athletes

Preparing Champions for Life means investing in the whole student-athlete. To get an idea of what that means to the athletic department, here are the average annual costs invested in each full scholarship student-athlete.

Ministry & Service $ 300 Academic Services $ 1,825 Nutrition & Wellness $ 2,150 Athletic Performance $ 2,895 Medical Care & Support $ 4,090 Tuition, Books, Room & Board $60,710 TOTAL $71,970 Learn more about the impact of your giving at

The upcoming 2018 football season marks the fifth year in McLane Stadium. Reseating the stadium in early 2019 provides an opportunity for season ticket holders to upgrade or relocate seats and enhances Baylor Athletics’ ability to support more than 530 student-athletes across 19 intercollegiate sports, while remaining competitive with schools in our conference and around the nation.

P

riority order for reseating selection will be based upon your 2018-19 Bear Foundation giving level. A giving level increase at any amount can improve priority for reseating selection. Bear Foundation members have until DEC. 31, 2018 to lock in the 2018-19 giving level that will be used to determine priority placement.

Those commitments will be due in full by May 31, 2019. Bear Foundation priority points will be used to determine priority within each giving level. All returning season ticket holders may select up to the number of seats they owned for the 2018 season and may request additional tickets (limits apply). Each season ticket holder will receive a dedicated time to log into the online 3D seat selection site to view and select available seats.

The following groups will be exempt from the reseating process: •

S uite and Loge Box Owners are exempt based upon previously established gift agreements, with most contracts lasting 10 or more years. C hampionship Club Members are exempt from reseating and may keep current seats and parking. They will also have first priority to move seats during the selection process, if desired. eason Ticket Holders for 10 or More Consecutive S Years will also be exempt from the reseat, if desired. Football season tickets must have remained in the primary account holder’s name for ten years consecutively, including the 2018 football season.

W O R K S How can I maintain my seats & parking from the 2018 season, if I don’t meet any of the aforementioned requirements? •

A ny Bear Foundation member at the Green Bear Level or higher ($750 or more) who INCREASES his or her annual commitment for the 2018-19 membership year BY ONE GIVING LEVEL, will be exempt and may keep seats and parking in their current location. For example: If Member A, who currently gives $1,500 annually, decides to increase to $3,000 per year, he/she will keep his/her current seats and parking. If Member B currently gives $400 annually and wants to keep his/her seats and parking in his/her current location, he/she must increase to $1,500 or more per year.

Club Seats

Club seat owners may keep the same number of Club seats they held in 2018, but are not guaranteed the same location. The exemption criteria outlined above also applies to Club section reseating for those who wish to keep seats and parking in the same location. Seats in the Club will go through the reseat process first, beginning with a renewal commitment in the fall of 2018, followed by the seat selection process in February 2019. R E S E A T I N G

GIVING CALENDAR CHANGES

Based on donor feedback and in effort to simplify policies and deadlines, the Bear Foundation is making some changes to the annual giving timeline, which will go into effect for the 2019-20 membership year.

Due to changes made under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, gifts made to the Bear Foundation, which directly give the donor a right to purchase athletic tickets or seating, will no longer be deductible as a contribution. Our team is actively reviewing Bear Foundation and ticket pricing to determine best practices that will serve the greatest benefit to our dedicated donors and fans. As always, we advise you consult with your personal tax advisor with any questions or for additional guidance.

In 2017, the Bear Foundation introduced a new level within the Championship Club, which reflects the amount of a full athletic scholarship at Baylor University. The Championship Club Full Scholarship level honors Baylor Athletics’ most dedicated and generous donors who contribute $60,000 or more annually to support Baylor student-athletes.

BAYLOR BEAR FOUNDATION GIVING GUIDE

Current Policy

According to the current policy, the Bear Foundation membership year runs from June 1 through May 31, with the payment deadline of May 31 coming at the END of the membership year. This collection policy has allowed donors to receive benefits all year long, including priority placement for football and basketball seat selection, based upon only their PLEDGE and without having to make any payment on the commitment. Though the vast majority of donors and season ticket holders faithfully honor their commitments, the current giving calendar has provided some the opportunity to abandon their pledge after already receiving the benefits and using the related season tickets. The existing timeline also essentially requires an early giving deadline for football season ticket holders and, at times, requires members to make Bear Foundation payments and season tickets payments simultaneously. Members have asked for more clear deadlines and a simpler process. The Bear Foundation has answered!

Here’s What’s New To clear up conflicting deadlines in the spring, starting in the 2019-20 membership year and onward, annual commitments will always be due on or before December 31. N E W T I M E L I N E

priority points for cash giving to assist in priority placement for seat selection and relocation processes.

See a full two-year timeline with important dates and deadlines on page 12.

What Are The Benefits?

The new giving calendar provides many benefits to donors: • Donors may complete all payments in the same calendar year, even on a 12-month plan. • Separates payment deadlines for Bear Foundation and season tickets for football, basketball and other sports, putting less financial strain on donors at specific points in the year. • N ew final payment deadline of December 31 is easier to remember – a frequent request from Bear Foundation members in recent years.

SO.

JESSICA HINOJOSA

Guadalajara, Mexico

For most members, these changes will have minimal impact. However, if you usually pay in the second-half of the membership year, now is the time to begin adjusting payment plans. Options for donors include merging remaining payments on 2018-19 and anticipated payments for 2019-20 into one automated plan which can be spread out from now until Dec. 31, 2019. Or, donors can have two separate plans running simultaneously if preferred. The Bear Foundation team is ready to assist you with any questions and walk you through your options. We are confident the new calendar will make giving annually an easier and better experience for donors.

Baylor Athletics, the Bear Foundation and more than 500 student-athletes are grateful for your generous support, which is essential to our mission of Preparing Champions for Life. 9 PREPARING CHAMPIONS FOR LIFE
