Parkside Clinic

Birmingham,AL

The clinic’s location on 20th St. and 2nd Ave. (opposite Cityville) completes a perimeter with the Medical district, Railroad Park, Region’s Field, and the proposed expansion of UAB’s campus. 20th St. is inherently more active than 2nd Ave. and 19th St. because it is a major axis from the highway that is due North of Birmingham’s Parkside area. The location of the clinic defines entry to this portion of downtown and promotes the act of being healthy for the individual and the urban fabric, rather than just treating illness. The existing structure on site was built in the 1930’s and renovated within the past decade. It is a contextually rich building and provides an ideal location for a grocery store which is much needed in the area and within the clinic’s program. The material pallete of this design makes reference to the existing structure and Birmingham’s history by using reclaimed brick and a metal rainscreen. The ground level plan also makes reference to Railroad Park and Region’s Field by abstracting its geometry within the form of the courtyard and widened sidewalk on 2nd Ave. The clinic is designed with a steel structure on a 30’ x 30’ grid to allow potential renovations and to support local economy.

Greenhouse

Canopy

Newbern,AL

At the Rural Studio, my team was tasked with designing and building an operable pulley system for the solar greenhouse. The structure is purely steel and glass and requires a deployable canopy that can diffuse the sun’s intense rays in the summer and keep in heat in the winter. The canopy design also has to complement the design aesthetic of steel and glass. The pulley system design is composed of stainless and galvanized steel pulleys, rods, and wire rope. The canopy fabric is an aluminzed shade cloth which produces more diffused light and beautiful light effects. The design was a success after building a full-scale mock-up and making minimal adjustments.
