Barcelona, Spain 2012 98.600 m² Hotel, Convention Center and Mall

* FIRST PRIZE. CUM LAUDE PROJECT The project is set up from the beginning as a public space articulated in two plazas that seeks to return and provide citizens with the city 's relationship with the sea , the mountain of Montjuic , and port. The project stretches the boardwalk to meet city references establishing a consistent image within the waterfront. From an urban perspective represents the challenge to intervent in one of the points of access and connecting the waterfront to Montjuïc and the sea. Organized into two plazas, the first serves as an open extension to the city and over the water dunk. The second provides a lobby for the hotel and convention center giving access to the mountain by a large staircase. CONNECT : The project respects the current route of the promenade that connects to the passenger terminal .The relation with Montjuïc is also given by the roof by connecting and giving access from the waterfront. GROW : The project articulates a large socket that represents the base of the mountain to reach the sea. This large base is from the hotel and auditorium grow. The hotel clogs maritime shaft with a tower that visually attracts the passersby. OGANIZE : The project articulates two different plazas , one to recieve all kinds of events and the other to connect with Montjuic . The piece functions as a hinge audiotrio that divides and gives rhythm to the walk .

The project is divided into a series of volumes which generates two kinds of spaces, one inside of the blocks and the other between them and the ground. The interior of the volume is destined to show permanent exhibitions of the artist. The bottom space is an opened and flexible space that contains workshops, screening rooms and sculptures. The relationship between these spaces is given through a series of patios that give light and articulate the circulations. The materiality of concrete seeks to show a strong image, full and empty, true picture of the artist's work.

* HONOR MENTION

The project is inserted in a rural fabric in the center of the plot by drawing a perfect square. This square is divided into a grid of 9 squares creating a central courtyard. In this way the building is arranged and oriented to provide views, terraces, access and adapting to the environment.

Drop-in is a ceramic floor for public spaces. Born from the desire to create a very simple system that generates rich results. The projects focuses on a clear and precise geometry in a total of four pieces. Specifically three circles (of different diameter) and a piece of board which a single spin gets off the different perimeters that are generated.

Origami folds and unfolds on deck shaping becoming part of the envirorment. The lower patio serves as a faculty that isolates the sculptor from reality allowing him to focus on his work.

* FIRST PRIZE. CUM LAUDE PROJECT

The roof, apparently complex, fallows a pattern and structure completely modulars. This will reduce the environmental impact of the building.

F O R

The placement is simple. The joint piece is the key and needs to be repeated and rotated to grow the pattern . Its size can be adapted to street furniture , vegetation and possible variables. The system can dispense with the circular pieces to give small reservoirs of water, vegetation or other types of flooring . The light peace appears at key points to make visible some element or to guide the passer along a route . It also allows the plane of light placed on the floor allowing the vision of the sky at night . All circles are glazed white board while the joint piece retains the original color of the ceramic which provides vibration and texture to the whole.

*PROJECT UNDER CONSTRUCTION The Faculty of Radio and Television at the University of Silesia is inserted in a consolidated block of Katowice on a disused building that was slated for demolition. The project proposes to maintain the existing building, build a bar construction and expected continuing low-volume high block inside a courtyard as the protagonist of the intervention. The proposal is sensitive to the existing body, building plastics and their values, and it stands on an abstract volume of the same brick lattice that continues the sectional shape of his neighbor. The new building clogs the whole site and empties to generate a large central courtyard establishing new relationships of the various workshops and classrooms of the new university.

*COMPETITION WON The project is structured in three light boxes that fit the land to the sea drawing a large lighthouse. A great baseboard covers the entire surface of the plot and organizes ground floor flows. Each of the three boxes is oriented to capture the best views and maximum light. In consequence, there are three types of rooms facing different points. The facade of wooden slats is the continuous element that unifies the porject and dialogues with the white brick plinth. The relationship of the three boxes each given by a side corridor that connects and orders. Two empty courtyards and ground floor giving access while respecting the existing vegetation. Materiality, lightness massive constructive proposal seeking maximum effectiveness with minimal impact on the environment.

The behavior of the existing building in these times of economic crisis aims to give a clear message to Europe by accountability and cost savings. We offer recycling existing building thus avoiding the cost of the demolition and re- construction. The facade as a white flag on the Unter den Linden represents peace , gentleness, and modernity. The Embassy is a symbol and visual representation of the country abroad. Shows what it is the country , and what one would like to be .A big white cloth with a transparent material provided on the inside of the building and white on the outside, will cover the old , existing building with minimal expense and create a strong, straightforward message new image. By opening up the ground floor of the existing building we propose a garden and forest inside the courtyard visible also from Unter den Linden .A new building will be built adjacent to the existing and drawing a perfect squared patio. The interior facades are made of bricks typical of the south Polish . The forest as a symbol and a new image of Polish (nature , kindness , persistence , surprise). Crossing the white canvas of the facade , we come to a lush garden , an oasis of peace and tranquility.

*PROJECT UNDER CONSTRUCTION At a site on the edge of town in a still poorly defined, we propose a clear and pure single volume, with an internal courtyard protected from the wind as the protagonist of cultural exchange and relations between students. The project builds on the existing topographic break in the sun minimizing earthwork and supports the volume on the upper platform on the sports steering wheel to create a porch and a slipway. The entire syllabus is solved on one floor with direct access from the main street and the Primary and Infant classrooms occupy the north and south sides of the courtyard. Downstairs, in direct contact with the courts, has the gym and locker rooms. The building is constructed from a regular structure and constant modulus organized throughout the school. Selected materials and colors will connect to the traditional way which has always been built on the site.

Respecting the old headquarters building , the project reinterprets it and use a new contemporary language. The project analyzes the old headquarters , its structure and adapts to current needs , projecting a new image of Albany. The new complex makes the Bank of Albany a compact piece with a central courtyard representing the historic image of the country's evolution . We explored the region’s map of Albany and projected it as the structure of the main facade . Consequently , it becomes a complex structural benchmark to make it a symbolic representative of Albania. The map of the different regions of Albania , becomes the building structure . Looking for the confrontation of this duality between two buildings, including horizontal and vertical lines of the historic and complexity of the new , between the intersection of the opacity and hardness of the existing light , transparency and new building technologies .

*PROJECT UNDER CONSTRUCTION The project recreates a new center that focuses on human capital and the structure scale territory from a kind, sensitive and domestic. The green plot is revealed as an infrastructure that articulates the territory. The vector time, the city-body. The ZAC Rouget de Lisle is a big bet on how to create and organize city territory, relying on public space and landscape as an opportunity to create a new urbanism. The limits on public space are blurred and redefined. The appropriation of public space can be real only if accompanied by education of citizens. Concepts such as respect for diversity and the variety of types along with the creation of common spaces and exchanging favors social cohesion. The project consists of 136,000 m2 of built area , spread over a program of : social and collective housing , small businesses, area activities and offices , public spaces and various equipment .

NEW C H I N A T OW N BR AN C H L I BRAR Y PROPOSAL FOR THE NEW LIBRARY IN CHICAGO, USA

P R O F E S S I O N A L

P R O J E C T

Company: JGMA ARCHITECTS Location: Chicago, United states Year: 2013 *FINALIST PROJECT As finalists in the design competition for the New Chinatown Branch Library, the JGMA-Madison design-build team developed a project that takes into consideration the history and significance of Chicago's Chinatown while looking forward to a new vision for a community celebrating its centennial anniversary. Part community center, part media center, part tourist attraction and cultural arts center, the library is as much a destination as it is a functional public amenity. Designed to take advantage of the particular site location, JGMA's proposal provides a strong link between the historic Chicago Chinatown corridor to the south and the more recent Chinatown plaza and developments to the north. The generative concept of the design lies in the traditional Chinese garden courtyard, which provides an unfolding entry procession and a public place for community gathering or individual contemplation. The courtyard canopy provides a feeling of enclosure while functioning as a new Chinatown gate--the opportunity to pass through from the old to the new. The design team for this LEED Platinum-seeking project included Madison Construction, Buro Happold, Site Design, Forefront Engineers, Knight, Fun Finders, R.M. Chin & Associates and the Zhou B. Art Center.
