Thesis Statement | Exploring how ruins in a war-torn city can be transformed and re-assimilated into the urban form as well as provide opportunity for healing and growth across social divides. Understanding how ruins can play a role in hurting and mending a community through architecture as well as representing a fragile and static part of social memory in a city.

This thesis project examines how divided cities and communities recover after cultural and architectural trauma by understanding the ruins and memory left behind. The ruins remain as a way to preserve social identity and to establish a new future that merges with the old. This ongoing thesis project focuses on creating an evolving memorial and transforming the role of ruins in a post- trauma community by establishing contrasting experiences of old and new, sacred and profane. The project focuses on repurposing and memorializing the ruins of a Girl’s High School in Mostar in the former Yugoslavia.

Deconstructing the Ruin

By establishing a place within the decay that transforms and re-inhabits the overgrown and destroyed, the ruins then mirror the opportunities for healing that can take part in a community as a way to confront history and reconsider the future.

50/50 Project

Hazelwood Initiative _Hazelwood, Pittsburgh This group project involved working with a local Pittsburgh community, in partnership with the Hazelwood Initiative to renovate and upgrade the building enclosure and insulation system of several homes in the neighborhood. Our group proposed a cost effective method to repair the damaged and aging brick and mortar as well as to install insulation to upgrade the overall building enclosure system. This proposal focused on using labor from several local contractors for the tuck-pointing and new interior spray foam insulation application that would upgrade the value of the homes while remaining within the limited budget. _Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania The new community center responds to the unique site conditions and integrates Gropius and Breuer’s modern residential design to create a space where residents can meet and interact. Circulation is pulled off and hung from the public program elements and private spaces overlook the steep ravine so user functions overlap. Under the guidelines of advance building construction, this comprehensive design studio explored materiality and unique construction methods to complete and as a response to Gropius and Breuer’s modern residential housing complex. With the main road running beneath the new community center, pedestrian and user circulation wraps around program elements to expose movement and highlight the visible truss system.

_Ithaca, New York This urban winery and hotel is a formal representation of program and human distribution. The program on the ground plane is distributed across the site to create a series of open spaces that wrap each program space. These ground program pieces then connect to the surface program, a series of hotel room banks and a restaurant. The connections between these create a continuous connection that wraps all of these pieces and transitions the surface water filtration to the vineyards the the form is oriented towards. This continuous form is interrupted by a series of open air discontinuities blending the boundary between inside and outside of the structure, as well as a series of lightwells, connecting the interior program spaces and the top exterior surface.

Outdoor Boundaries Frick Park, Pittsburgh_

This community center places emphasis on learning as an interactive experience using the merging point between the meadow area and forest in Frick Park. Classrooms and other program elements are pulled apart with a central spine, creating a landscape within a landscape where the separation between indoor and outdoor becomes significantly blurred.

Storage

Greenhouse Mechanical

Meadow Trail

With a system of overlapping spaces and a funneled progression which pulls users through the Environmental Center, this becomes a place where nature overtakes the classrooms and becomes the primary education tool. The classrooms orient towards the forest to create an immersive experience while the more public spaces, accessible to all park users engage the surrounding meadow trails. The circulation path crosses the boundary between the two environment types. In many instances, nature pushes up against building boundaries to erase the line between indoor and outdoor program through elements such as green and blue roofs, NANA walls and occupiable green houses.

Vienna, Austria _ The historical amnesia and reluctance to accept the past in Vienna allowed these Nazi artillery towers from WWII to fall to ruin. The new film archive and center of the war resistance archives act as a positive interpretation of the towers and creates a way for users to understand the towers and catch a glimpse of the forgotten past. A restaurant pushed against the side of one of the towers gives a new reading on the verticality and austerity.

This urban studio focused on analyzing Vienna as a whole and the role of the Augarten as a positive and negative point of attraction. The two Nazi artillery towers that dominate this historic baroque park create a scar on the city but the Viennese people have learned to coexist with them. While 3 of the 6 towers have been repurposed, the others lay abandoned, including those in the Augarten. For the immaterial component of this project, our studio explored the various zones of this park, focusing on the forgotten and neglected zones.

The film and resistance archive are placed together to create communication between the two institutions and to intertwine their respective programs. This new tower is established as an analogy for the towers which houses history but also serves to promote understanding. The archive storage is placed in the two floors above the public midlevel and lower level with a central atrium piercing through each floor.
