Kew Royal Botanical Gardens Information

“The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew was founded in 1759, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 “(Kew.org, 2013). It is a vast botanical gardens with multiple sub gardens with various themes designed by a multitude of different people over centuries and maintained by the staff. Depending on the preferences of the designers, royalty and most notably the culture of the day, the gardens have been altered and re designed with some areas having a distinct baroque character and others a more current naturalistic style. The particular site chosen in this section is a large border by the pond opposite Kew’s Glasshouse Marine Display because of the use of plants that can or cant tolerate changing water and soil moisture levels.

This border also has an arrangement of plant species that hide and reveal certain parts of the waters edge dictating access both physically and visually. At certain points the chosen plant varieties will try to draw focus away from the water down to ground level by the pathway while others will move the focus to a higher eye line creating a visual interaction with the water itself.
