“Capillaries and Market Hall are both spaces where the exchange takes place: one in bodies, one in cities.

City Capillaries Project | Market Hall Design Site | Champaign, IL Course | Sophomore Studio II Area | 8,700 sqf Date | May 2017 Individual

41

C

apillaries are known as the tiniest but one of the most important parts in our bodies. Cells completely rely on capillaries to exchange oxygen, nutarians, waste, and carbon dioxide with plasma. Public area in our city, such as market hall, could be considered as the “capillaries of our cities since they are both spaces where the exchange takes place. Within the market hall, people exchange money, idea, goods, information, and even inspirations.

The notion of “home” or “hometown” can be described

in a variety of ways that attempt to connect a specific time and place in one’s past. Although everyone comes from a different home or hometown, what we all have in common are certain memories of space, objects, and people...something we generally refer to as “keepsakes.” These keepsakes are forever tied to the memories of our past, while continuing to have impressions and implications on our futures. Home is a living memory…an ongoing tale that is interwoven in our everyday life. Our project “Home, Again” attempts to portray a series of “home” memories through a diagrammatic matrix of events, conversations, and gatherings. In this sense, “home” becomes a series of collected objects and moments, rather than a building.
