Left: Conceptual image of the perforated metal skin being backlit at night causing a glowing effect that is reflected onto a shallow pool. Right: Physical model demonstrating the dappled lighting effect caused by the morning sunlight penetrating the perforated metal skin.

panel aperture study

The pattern of the building’s skin was created by thinking of the building’s mass as an abstracted grove of trees placed at the edge of Pere Marquette Park. The tree patterning mimics and reflects the clumps of trees found across the river in Dan Kiley’s Chestnut Garden. The skin placed over the roof is created by quarter matching the tree tops. This design makes a statement that the building itself is a metaphorical macrocosm of the rare books vault, and the knowledge held within it is as precious as the wealth once guarded in the neighboring historic bank.
