Take, for instance, just a few of the most recent research studies published within the past few months showing that curcumin can: • Increase lifespan. (1) • Protect the liver oxidative stress. (2) • Kill fungus more effectively than ginger, clove and oregano. (3)

• Induce tumor cell death in the deepest parts of individual cells. (4) • Kill bladder cancer cells. (5) • Destroy lung cancer cells. (6) • Lower blood cholesterol levels. (7) • Protect against cognitive/memory defects from heavy ion irradiation. (8)

Top 7 Proven Turmeric Health Benefits The list of healing powers attributed to turmeric curcumin seems to go on for days. Of the 7,000 studies testing its effectiveness and safety, very few report any side effects whatsoever. Although inherent dangers exist for certain people, the vast majority of research findings center on the turmeric health benefits and its healing properties.

Some health conditions turmeric helps with are:

1. Chronic Inflammation and Pain The journal Oncogene published the results of a study that evaluated several anti-inflammatory compounds. It found that aspirin (Bayer, etc.) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.) are least potent, while curcumin is among the most potent anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative agents in the world. (9) This means turmeric not only has great promise with chronic pain, but since it has less side effects, it may provide safe, lasting results!

2. Rheumatoid Arthritis Due to its high anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is highly effective at helping people manage rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A recent study out of Japan evaluated its relationship with interleukin (IL)-6, the inflammatory cytokine known to be involved in the RA process, and discovered that curcumin “significantly reduced� these

inflammatory markers. This suggests that regular turmeric use could be a potent strategy to prevent the onset of RA from developing to begin with! (10)

3. Depression Researchers from the Government Medical College (Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India) published the results of the first study this past April to evaluate curcumin’s ability to manage depression in a controlled setting. Taking 60 volunteers diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) and diving the group to determine how patients treated by curcumin compared against fluoxetine (Prozac) and a combination of the two, it discovered that that the principal curcuminoid in turmeric is not only as effective as Prozac in managing depression, it doesn’t carry with it all the dangerous side effects as anti-depressive drugs do. According to the paper, “This study provides first clinical evidence that cur cumin may

be used as an effective and safe modality for treatment in patients with MDD.” (11)

4. Diabetes Turmeric is shown to lower blood glucose levels and reverse insulin resistance. For instance, an article published in Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Communications shared a study out of Auburn University that discovered curcumin suppresses glucose production in the liver. Fascinatingly, researchers proved that it’s actually 400 times more potent than Metformin (a common diabetes drug) in activating AMPK and its downstream target acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). Turmeric acted as an anti-diabetic and antioxidant in diabetes, especially type 1 diabetes (12), improved metabolic function and reduced the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries of type 2 diabetes patients (13).

5. Cancer Recent studies show turmeric is a powerful adversary to cancer. Curcumin shows a marked ability to inhibit cancer cell growth, boost antioxidant levels and the immune system, and kill cancer cells. It seems to work on improving mitochondrial function at a cellular level, and it improves metabolism. Even against drugresistant strains of leukemia, curcumin caused cell death of cancer cells.

6. Skin and Aging Turmeric has many healing properties for skin. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory so it reduces redness or other skin irritations. BREAKFAST Easy Breakfast Smoothie: 1 cup of frozen fruit (strawberries, blueberries, mango etc) 1 banana ½ cup of coconut milk 1-2 handfuls of greens (spinach/kale) 1 Tbsp. Organic unsweetened apple sauce Honey, to taste Optional: almond butter or almond slices

Directions§ Place all ingredients in a high powered blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

BREAKFAST Breakfast Sausage Patties 1 pound of organic grass-fed ground beef or pork blend 2 Tbsp of honey, agave or maple syrup 2 tsp Himalayan salt 1 clove minced garlic 1 Tbsp minced shallots 1 tsp minced ginger 1 tsp sage ¼ tsp thyme 1 Tbsp coconut oil, for frying Directions § Heat garlic and shallots in a frying pan with a portion of the coconut oil until translucent. Set aside and let cool. § In a large bowl, add the ground meat, honey and spices.

Mix with your hands until blended uniformly. Add in cooled garlic and shallots and mix until blended. § Separate the seasoned meat into about 6-8 sections, roll into balls and press between your palms until they form patties. § Heat coconut oil in skillet over medium heat, and fry pre-formed patties for about 3-5 minutes per side, or until they reach 160F. You can cook longer if the inside is still pink or if you like a crunchier exterior. § Serve and enjoy!

BREAKFAST Blueberry Plantain Pancakes 2 ripe plantains (they should be covered in brown/black spots) ½ cup blueberries 1 Tbsp Honey ¼ tsp vanilla ½ tsp Nutmeg ½ tsp Cinnamon ¼ tsp ginger Directions: § Using a fork or potato masher, mash the plantain into a thick, slightly lumpy pulp. § Add in honey and spices and mix. Then fold in blueberries. § Heat 1-2 Tbsp of oil into a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Spoon 1/4 cup of mixture onto the pan, and spread them until they are about ½ inch thick and about 3” in diameter. I can normally fit 3 pancakes per pan Cook for about 8 minutes on the first side, then carefully flip and cook for another 8 minutes on the other side. § Serve warm with maple syrup or Sweet Blueberry Sauce (see Sauces and Dressings section) and/or a dollop of the Maple Coconut Whipped Cream (see Sauces and Dressings section), and top with walnuts or almonds… or cool on a wire rack for later. LUNCH Chicken Club Lettuce Wraps 3 chicken tenders or one chicken breast; seasoned, cooked and diced ½ avocado, diced 4 slices bacon, cooked and diced 4 romaine lettuce leaves 2 Tbsp coconut cream ½ tsp turmeric ¼ tsp fresh minced ginger ¼ tsp pink Himalayan salt ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

Directions: § In a bowl, whisk together coconut cream, turmeric ginger, salt and pepper. Set aside. § To prepare lettuce wraps, divide the chicken amongst four leaves of romaine. Top with the sliced avocado, bacon and dressing, then wrap the edges of the lettuce tightly around the filling, being careful not to rip the lettuce. Serve with a side of Zucchini Chips (see Snacks section), if desired.

LUNCH Chicken Bacon Avocado Salad 4-8 slices bacon; cooked and diced 1 tablespoon coconut oil 2 cups chopped asparagus 4 cups spinach One chicken breast; seasoned, cooked and sliced 1 large ripe avocado, diced ¼ cup good quality olive oil ¼ cup good quality balsamic vinegar Salt and pepper to taste fresh basil for topping optional: cranberries, almonds or walnuts

Directions: § Melt coconut oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Toss asparagus in with the melted oil and saute until cooked through to your desired level. I like mine roasted and golden brown. § Place spinach in a large bowl. Top with chicken, asparagus, and bacon, avocado, cranberries, and nuts.

Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic, or use my dairy free ranch dressing (Sauces/Dressing section).

LUNCH Bacon Avocado Sliders 2 large sweet potato, cut into ½ inch rounds (making 12 slices) 1 lb ground beef ½ onion, chopped ½ cup water 2 garlic cloves, minced 4-8 slices bacon; cooked 1 avocado, smashed with juice from ½ small lime 1 tbsp coconut oil ½ head romaine lettuce Salt and pepper, to taste Directions: § § §

Preheat oven to 400F. Layer sweet potato rounds on oiled baking sheet, and bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.

While the sweet potatoes are cooking, heat coconut oil and water in skillet and add the onion. Cook for 5-6 minutes, then add in garlic. When the onions are soft, move them to a bowl and set aside to cool.

Once cooled, combine the onions in with the ground beef until the onions are evenly distributed throughout. Then, separate the beef into 6 sections. Roll each section in the palms of your hand to create a ball, and then press it to form a patty. Lightly salt and pepper each side. Place on pre-heated skillet and cook 5-6 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.

When burgers are finished, assemble each by topping a sweet potato round with lettuce, a burger patty, bacon, smashed avocado and another sweet potato slice

LUNCH Rosemary Garlic Flatbread 1 ½ cups tapioca flour ½ cup coconut milk 3 Tbsp coconut oil ½ Tsp Himalayan Salt 3 Tbsp Nutritional yeast 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 Tsp fresh rosemary, chopped For topping2 cloves garlic 1 additional tsp of fresh rosemary Coconut oil and Himalayan Salt, for garnish Directions§ § §

Preheat oven to 450F. Place pizza stone or thick pizza pan into oven to preheat.

Place tapioca flour in bowl, set aside.

Gently heat coconut milk, salt and 3 tbsp coconut oil in a small saucepan until steaming, but not boiling. Gently pour coconut mixture into tapioca flour bowl.

Fold in nutritional yeast, garlic cloves and 2 tsp rosemary until combined to create the dough.

VERY CAREFULLY pull pizza pan out of oven, and place dough in the center. Being extremely careful not to burn yourself, spread dough out using a spatula until it is about ¼ inch thick.

Brush the flatbread lightly with coconut oil, and then sprinkle on the remaining garlic and rosemary, and a dash of salt.

Bake for 10-12 minutes, depending on how crispy you prefer it.

DINNER Slow Cooker Pulled Pork Stuffed Sweet Potatoes 2 lbs boneless pork loin 4 large sweet potatoes 1 red onion, thinly sliced 2 green onions, thinly sliced 4-6 cloves garlic, minced ½ cup beef stock 1 tsp Turmeric 1 tsp ginger salt and pepper to taste § Rub pork evenly with ginger, turmeric, garlic, salt and pepper. § Place the onion, pork and beef broth in the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours. § When it’s getting close to chow time, preheat oven to 400F. § Place the sweet potatoes in the oven and bake for 45 minutes, or until tender. § Remove the pork and onions from the slow cooker and place in a bowl, using two forks to pull the meat apart. § Cut a slit down the middle of each sweet potato and fill with pulled pork. Sprinkle on green onions and drizzle with Blackberry Barbeque Sauce (see Sauce and Dressing section). § Who said eating healthy isn’t yummy?

DINNER Honey-Garlic Salmon 1 lb salmon fillet Honey Garlic Glaze½ teaspoon ginger, minced 4 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons coconut aminos (soy sauce substitute) Directions: § Preheat oven to 350F. § Combine ingredients to make the sauce, and marinate the salmon for 15-30 minutes § Place salmon on a foil-lined baking sheet, and bake for 15-20 minutes depending on thickness, basting the salmon with the sauce periodically. § Over medium high heat, bring the remaining sauce to a boil and simmer for 3-5 minutes, until reduced § Drizzle salmon with sauce reduction, and serve over a bed of greens.

DINNER Cilantro Lime Chicken Breast 2-3 lbs of chicken breast 1 bunch Cilantro, roughly chopped Juice of 4-5 limes 4-5 cloves of garlic, minced 1 Tbsp Coconut oil Himalayan Salt Pepper

Directionsยง Preheat grill to medium high (my preference), or oven to 450F ยง Place chicken breasts in a large bowl or ziplock bag. Set aside. ยง In a medium sized bowl, whisk together lime juice, garlic, coconut oil and cilantro. Pour over chicken breasts, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Let chicken marinate for 5 minutes. The citrus will begin to cook it if you let it marinate for too long. ยง Arrange chicken breasts on the grill or on a greased baking sheet. Grill/Bake for 8-10 minutes per side, or until the juice runs clear. Serve with a side salad or a side of asparagus.

DINNER Balsamic Chicken Breast 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts 8 garlic cloves 2 Tbsp honey 1 tbsp balsamic Vinegar 1 tbsp coconut oil 1 tsp each chopped basil, rosemary, thyme Salt and Pepper

Directions ยง Salt and pepper to taste ยง Preheat oven to 450*F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and lightly brush with coconut oil. ยง In a small pan, saute garlic and oil until tender. Remove from heat and stir in honey, balsamic, and herbs. ยง Season chicken breast with salt and pepper. Place in baking dish and cover with the garlic mixture. ยง Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until juices run clear. Cooking time will depend on the size and thickness of your chicken.

SAUCES AND DRESSINGS Maple Coconut Whipped Cream 1 can Full Fat Coconut Milk/Coconut Cream 2 Tbsp Maple syrup Directionsยง Let the coconut cream sit at room temperature for as long as possible. Then, without shaking it, remove the lid and spoon out the thick cream from the top of the can, and place it into a small bowl. ยง Whisk or blend the maple syrup into the coconut cream with an electric mixer until smooth, incorporating air into the mixture. Set in the fridge until ready to eat.

SAUCES AND DRESSINGS Sweet Blueberry sauce 2 cups Blueberries ¼ cup Water 2 Tbsp Honey 1 Tbsp Lemon juice 2 tsp. Arrowroot Powder 1 Tbsp Water

Directions§ Place the berries, lemon, honey and water in a saucepan over medium heat and cook for 5-10 minutes, or until bubbling. Lightly mash some of the blueberries with a whisk or masher to release the juices. Remove pan from heat. § In a small bowl, stir together the arrowroot powder and 1 TBSP of water. Whisk the arrowroot mixture into the saucepan, stirring constantly until mixed completely. Let cool until no longer hot. The sauce will become even thicker when chilled, but you can serve this warm over pancakes.

SAUCES AND DRESSINGS Coconut Avocado Ranch Dressing 1 Large Avocado 1 cup Coconut Cream 3 tbsp Lemon Juice 2 tsp Dill 1 tsp parsley 1-2 tsp Salt 1 clove Garlic ¼ tsp ginger ½ tsp Granulated Onion Directions§ Place all ingredients into a blender or food processor until thoroughly combined. § Store in a mason jar or airtight container for up to a week.

SAUCES AND DRESSINGS Blackberry Barbeque Sauce 1 Tbsp Coconut oil 1 small onion, diced 2-3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 cup fresh blackberries ¼ cup Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) ½ cup water ½ cup coconut sugar 2 tsp freshly grated ginger Salt and pepper, to taste Directions – § Melt the coconut oil in a skillet over medium heat, and cook the onion until soft and golden- about 5-6 minutes.

Add the garlic and cook for another minute. § Add in the blackberries, water, ACV, sugar and ginger.

Continue to cook over medium heat, being sure to stir and mash the berries frequently for about 15-20 minutes, or until the blackberries have broken down and the sauce is simmering. Add salt and pepper, to taste. § Transfer the sauce to a blender and puree until smooth.

Strain out the seeds, if desired. § Store in a tightly sealed jar for up to 2 weeks.

SAUCES AND DRESSINGS Easy Garlic & Artichoke Hummus 14 oz jar quartered artichokes in brine 2 cloves garlic ¼ cup olive or coconut oil 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice Directions§ Drain the artichokes, pressing down on them to squeeze out as much of the liquid as possible, so the hummus stays creamy. § Remove the skin from the garlic cloves, and place the artichokes and garlic into a blender or food processor, and pulse until both are roughly chopped. § Add in the olive oil and lemon juice, and process until combined and creamy.

SNACKS Zucchini Chips One Large Zucchini 1-2 cloves garlic, minced 2-4 Tbsp Coconut oil (Just enough to coat zucchini evenly) Salt and pepper Directions: § Preheat oven to 225F § Melt coconut oil in a small saucepan until slightly warmed and liquefied (you can melt it in the microwave, if preferred) § Slice your zucchini about ¼ inch thin and place in a large mixing bowl. Add in garlic. § Pour coconut oil over the zucchini chips and garlic and toss until the chips are coated evenly. Then, lay them out on a baking sheet in one layer. § Bake the chips at 225F for 60-90 minutes, or until they reach desired level of crispiness. § For best results, eat within 2-3 hours.

SNACKS “Cheesy” Kale Chips 2 bunches of Kale ¼ cup coconut oil ¼ cup nutritional yeast (can use more or less if needed) ½ Tsp Salt Directions§ Preheat Oven to 275F. § Cut away all stems from Kale and chop into large pieces.

Place in a large mixing bowl. § Melt coconut oil just until it’s luke-warm and pour over Kale. Mix until all kale is well coated. Then, mix in the nutritional yeast until Kale is well coated. § Lay out on baking sheets in an even layer, trying to keep kale from clumping on top of each other. § Put in the oven and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until all kale is crispy. You may want to stir once or twice during the cooking process. § Store in a ziplock bag

SNACKS Islander Energy Bombs ½ cup almonds ¼ cup cashews ¼ cup macadamia nuts 1 ½ cup dates, pitted (Medjool dates work best) Zest and juice from 3 key limes ½ cup unsweetened shredded coconut Additional coconut, to coat the outside Stevia/coconut sugar Directions• Add the nuts to a food processer and pulse until they are finely chopped. Do not overdo it, as you do not want them to turn into a nut butter.

• Add the dates, lime juice and zest, and pulse again until the dates are finely chopped and the mixture begins to clump together.

• Separate the mixture out and roll between your palms into 2 inch balls.

• Roll each Bomb in a mixture of shredded coconut and either stevia or coconut sugar to coat the outside.

SNACKS Guilt Free Salsa One 14.5 ounce can carrots in water, drained and rinsed 1/3 cup diced beets (If canned, beets in water) 1 small white onion 3 cloves garlic 2-3 Tbsp Lime Juice 1 bunch cilantro 1 Tsp Himalayan Salt 2 Tsp honey Directionsยง Place all ingredients in blender until uniformly blended.

Serve with carrot sticks, or vegetable chips.

DESSERTS Easy Chocolate Banana Ice Cream 2 large ripe bananas 1-2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder 1 Tbsp Honey 1 Tbsp Shredded coconut Sliced almonds, for topping Directions ยง Slice the bananas into discs, put them on a plate and put them in the freezer until they are completely frozen through. ยง When the bananas are completely frozen, blend them together with the cocoa powder and honey in a food processor or high powered blender until smooth. ยง Mix in shredded coconut until completely incorporated (You can use toasted coconut as a topping instead, if preffered), and top with sliced almonds.

DESSERTS Soft Serve Berry Sundae 2 large ripe bananas ¼ cup coconut milk (can use more if needed to blend) ½ cup frozen mixed berries Directions§ Slice the bananas into discs, put them on a plate and put them in the freezer until they are completely frozen through. § When the bananas are completely frozen, blend them together with the coconut milk. Use the least amount possible in order to blend the bananas. Start with less, and add more, as needed. § Spoon out soft serve into a dish and set aside, leaving a scoop of the soft serve in the blender. § Into the blender, add ½ cup of frozen mixed berries and a splash of coconut milk to your scoop of soft serve.

Pulse until you reach desired consistency. § Serve berry mixture over soft serve and top with almonds, coconut shreds, or whatever other toppings you prefer

DESSERTS No-Bake Coconut Macadamia Crazy Bars 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut ¼ cup macadamia nuts (or sub for nut of choice) ¼ cup agave (or ¼ cup water and 2-3 naturals stevia packs) 2 tbsp coconut oil ½ tsp pure vanilla extract ¼ tsp Himalayan salt Directions§ Combine all ingredients in a blender. § Scoop into a container and press firmly into all corners.

Place in freezer for 15 minutes. § Cut into squares and serve. Store in refrigerator for up to two weeks.

DESSERTS Coconut Grasshopper Bars Mint Layer Ingredients ½ Hass Avocado ½ cup coconut cream ¼ cup Honey 6 Tbsp Coconut Oil 1 ½ cups shredded unsweetened coconut ¼ cup Coconut milk ½ Tsp mint Extract Pinch of salt

Chocolate Layer Ingredients ¼ Cup coconut oil 2 Tbsp Honey ¼ tsp Vanilla Extract ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder Pinch of salt Grated coconut, for topping

Directions: Mint Layer- Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth and you can still see small flecks of coconut. Line a 9x9 casserole dish or square cake pan with foil. Smooth mixture into prepared dish and place it in the freezer.

Chocolate Layer- Melt coconut oil and honey together in a small saucepan over low heat. After combined, remove from heat and stir in remaining ingredients until smooth. Pour over the chilled bottom portion and return to the freezer for an additional 15 minutes, or until the chocolate layer is hardened. Peel off the foil layer and cut into bars.

Store covered, in the freezer.
