School of Business speaker urges students to seek opportunities given MADISON LAMMERT reporter

After taking advantage of opportunities at SIUE, senior economics and finance major Kelly Pfaff, of Sandwich, Illinois, now boasts an internship at Boeing, and was named the School of Business undergraduate commencement speaker.

Pfaff said she believes it’s important for students to experience as much outside the classroom as they can.

“If you’re truly interested in what you’re studying, I think you would find external opportunities to learn more about it because it genuinely interests you and it’s not something that the professors have the time or resources to do in class,” Pfaff said.

“It helps you to get a more broad and comprehensive view of what you’re studying.”

One learning experience Pfaff participated in was going to the federal reserve with other students and instructor of economics Mary Anne Pettit. Pettit said she uses her connections with the federal reserve to allow students to experience jobs offered there along with presentations,

and Pfaff ’s participation in these activities shows the type of student she is.

“It says what we all know about Kelly which is she has a passion for the discipline, she’s interested, she’s smart and she’s a good example for all the students,” Pettit said.

Pfaff also was a supplemental instructor last school year for a business math class.

According to the coordinator for the supplemental instructor program Rhonda Vonnahmen, being an SI leader not only demonstrates the leader’s proficiency in the subject, but also requires many other skills.

“You have to know the materials and you have to have good communication skills, you have to have a relationship with the students, you have to create an atmosphere in the sessions that’s friendly and so that students feel comfortable answering and asking questions,” Vonnahmen said.

Pfaff is interning at Boeing, a connection she made at the Dean’s Society Dinner.

Currently, she is working on the financial control’s team for the F22 fighter jet and before she helped develop robots to do simple, manual tasks for the company. She also interned for Schlafly brewery.

Pfaff said her internships have also allowed her to see what the actual workplace is like.

“I think that it’s important to engage in things that pertain to what you’re studying outside the classroom because even though the classroom is there to kind of prepare you in a way for what it is you’re going to be doing, a classroom is nothing like a job,” Pfaff said. “That’s one thing, too, that I’ve learned at Bowing: that the classroom is there to teach you skills, but those skills are not exactly what you’re going to be doing at your job.

LAYCEE THIGPEN Early childhood student brings motherly perspective to the classroom DARIAN STEVENSON reporter

As a nontraditional student and a mother of four, senior early childhood education major Laycee Thigpen, of Fairview Heights, Illinois, shows hard work and dedication to her own learning while also applying her knowledge.

Thigpen was nominated by the Early Childhood Education Program faculty, and was selected to speak at the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior Undergraduate Students Commencement.

Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning and Early Childhood Program faculty Elizabeth Sherwood said Thigpen was the best choice for a commencement speaker.

“Laycee has been an outstanding student and role model for her peers. She has an upbeat positive attitude that she brings to her daily life and also brings to her

peers,” Sherwood said.

According to Sherwood, Thigpen has worked as a teacher for Head Start and has placements in early childhood settings every semester.

Thigpen said she was excited to be chosen as a commencement speaker.

“Being that I’m a nontraditional student and I have children and a husband, I put forth a lot of time and energy in submitting quality work and being an example in the classroom and as a student, as well,” Thigpen said. “So, for my professors to actually recognize me and see the hard work that I put in — that I feel sometimes people don’t see is very exciting — and I felt like someone actually gets me.”

Thigpen said her commencement speech will focus on motivation.

“It will be a motivational message just letting people know that the world needs us and that our time at SIUE has prepared us for the next stage in our lives,” Thigpen

said. “So we have to make sure that we take all that we have learned and we use it to change the world.”

Senior early childhood education major Meagan Mendez, of Edwardsville, has done co-student teaching for the past eight weeks with Thigpen. Mendez said Thigpen has a great personality.

“As a person, [Thigpen] is hilarious.

She has a presence when she walks in the room where you knows she’s there and as a teacher she is super enthusiastic and fun,” Mendez said. “I don’t think even growing up I have known a teacher with that type of enthusiasm, and she really makes learning fun for the kids.”

Sherwood said what stands out about Thigpen is her ability to work well with children. “[Thigpen] is incredibly encouraging of children’s ideas, she sets the stage for innovating and engaging activities and she lets the children bring their own creativity and energy to the experiences,”

Sherwood said.

Thigpen runs a summer camp in East St. Louis called Delights Enrichment Camp, where she hopes to apply her skills.

“I really look forward to using what I learned at SIUE to provide quality care for children who have a lot of risk factors,” Thigpen said.

Commencement for School of Education, Health and Human Behavior students will begin at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, May 11 in the Vadalabene Center.

Schnebly’s husband Steve Schnebly said his wife is an amazing person and her journey to becoming a family nurse practitioner has not been easy.

“Jessica is kind, hard working, compassionate, dedicated and fun-loving,” Steve Schnebly said. “The fact that Jessica was able to complete her degree while part of the time being full time and part of the time being part time [as a nurse], managing life, maintaining her sanity, taking care of me, the dogs and our friends and still being able to juggle all those things is really phenomenal.”

Jessica Schnelby’s commencement speech will be about why nurses are important in healthcare.

“I decided to talk about the values that I think are important in nursing that nurses should have, then I kind of do it as a metaphor to traveling,” Jessica Schnebly said. “I also talk about how I think nurses

— which I do believe strongly — help make change happen in healthcare.”

Jessica Schnebly said SIUE has helped her get through school and work at the same time. “[My experience] has been great and SIUE has really helped me succeed in terms of the way the classes are structured,” Jessica Schnebly said. “It’s been very easy to work and go to school at the same time and in general I think it is a good institution and [SIUE and SIUC] has prepared me for both careers that I’ve had.”

SONJA BROMANN Future Pharmacist explores what lies ahead after graduation ALEAH GLODICH reporter

Many students graduating this May are going through the same crises — wondering what’s next for them. Fourth-year pharmacy student Sonja Bromann, of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, will speak at commencement with a speech focusing on “Where do we go from here?”

According to Bromann, students in the School of Pharmacy nominate and vote on their classmates to determine who will be the speaker at their graduation.

Bromann said being chosen by her peers was an honor.

“We’re going in a lot of different directions; you can go into a hospital, a community setting, or in a clinic. What’s most important, in my opinion, is the way in which we do our jobs — the way in which we practice,” Bromann said.

One of Bromann’s peers, Maggie Clark, a fellow pharmacy student, said Bro| Jakob Ruffner / The Alestle mann is the exact person students would

want representing their class.

“She’s very involved and truly knows a little something about everyone in our class. She is a great classmate and great friend,” Clark said.

Bromann not only made an impact on her peers but also her professors. Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology Beth Cady got to know Bromann during Bromann’s last year of pharmacy school clinical rotations.

Cady said one of Bromann’s biggest strengths is her communication skills.

“Sonja is heads above the rest. Her communication skills alone, either when she’s working with professional healthcare providers, or she’s working with patients, or she’s talking to other students, her communication skills are outstanding,” Cady said.

Bromann said she will be focusing on how students can perform their duties moving forward.

Bromann attended the University of Illinois for her undergraduate studies and

moved on to SIUE, where she came for doctorate studies in Pharmacy.

“My time at SIUE has been really welcoming, really inclusive. I’ve found most folks to be extremely friendly and students that I’ve met here are diligent and focused and are really well-rounded,” Bromann said.

Bromann chose SIUE for graduate school because she feels pharmacists are needed in rural communities at this time.

“Being on campus in Southern Illinois, in Edwardsville, we get to touch so many small communities in the area that really need help. I think that learning in that type of environment makes you a lot more cognizant of the community and the population that we’ll end up serving,” Bromann said.

After graduation, Bromann will be a full-time pharmacist with Meijer Pharmacy, a grocery store chain that provides pharmacy care. She will be serving the areas of Springfield, Bloomington, Champaign, Urbana and Danville, Illinois.

Amy yates Sociology student succeeds in class, URCA research as single mom MADISON LAMMERT reporter

Like the typical commencement speaker, senior sociology major Amy Yates, of South Roxana, Illinois, is well-known throughout her department for her involvement and high grades. However, unlike most students, Yates balances these activities on top of being a non-traditional student and single mother.

Yates said her daughter was her inspiration for going back to school.

“College is hard in itself, but then trying to be a single mom on top of that is really hard,” Yates said. “But, she’s been my inspiration to want to go back to school and to make the world a better place and I’m … hoping that my love of education and my love of school will be transferred onto her and that she’ll have that same passion and maybe not wait so long to go to college after high school.”

Because of this, Sociology Instructor Elizabeth Stygar said she believes Yates’ experiences will resonate with a wider audience at commencement.

“She’s also a non-traditional student and a mother, and she went to [a community college] before coming to SIUE, and I think that her experience can speak to a broader audience there at graduation,” Stygar said. “She overcame a lot of obstacles to get where she is, and I think that’s incredibly inspirational.”

Throughout her time at SIUE, Yates has been involved in a number of student organizations and honor societies, including being the Vice President of the Alliance of Students Against Poverty and an Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities assistant.

For her URCA project, Yates worked alongside Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of SIUE Successful Communities Collaborative Connie Frey Spurlock on a project that helped businesses in Alton, Illinois, by identifying both real and perceived barriers to starting businesses there.

“We interviewed stakeholders in the city [and] we talked to some city council members,” Yates said. “We talked to the Alton Main Street who works with other small businesses in Alton and business owners to

see what issues they had when they started their businesses and compiled a list of suggestions. Then, we came up with a list of barriers and formatted a survey around that. We are still collecting data on that.”

Frey Spurlock said having Yates as part of the group was a real asset to the project.

“When she applied for that URCA position on that project, which I was thrilled to have her and glad that she’s been a part of it,” Frey Spurlock said. “It was a wonderful experience, and I think Alton got some good information as a result of Amy’s research.”

Sociology Instructor Ezra Temko said Yates’ involvement outside the classroom builds off of her classroom studies.

“Her work outside is actually really complementing her work inside this academic space because part of her specific work is to learn about how we make a difference in the community and everything from what tactics and strategies work to how community change is made within the social world,” Temko said.

commencement speaker and reading letters of recommendation from professors for graduate school have been the most rewarding parts of her SIUE experience.

“I know how hard I work, and knowing that they can see how hard I work and that they understand that I really am doing the best that I can, it means a lot because it feels like all of my hard work over the last four years has finally come to fruition and I have something to show for it,” Yates said.
