NOVIJ URENGOI NOVY URENGOY

a sensazione che si ha quando si arriva a Novij Urengoi è di essere arrivati alla frontiera del mondo oltre la quale sembra impossibile spingersi. In realtà questo luogo è molto più vicino a noi di quanto immaginiamo; ogni volta che accendiamo i fornelli, le caldaie e ci scaldiamo, il gas che arriva nelle nostre case proviene in gran parte da qui, da Novij Urengoi, dalla Siberia nord-occidentale. È vero che non vi arriva immediatamente, deve infatti percorrere un lungo viaggio che dura circa una settimana e cinquemila chilometri, attraversando quattro nazioni e una infinità di fiumi, laghi e ferrovie.

Trent’anni fa non esisteva. Sulle mappe della zona c’erano disegnati solo fiumi, grandi laghi ed enormi distese abitate da renne, dai Nenets, i nomadi indigeni e da qualche tecnico alla ricerca dell’oro nero. Oggi Novij Urengoi è una vera “città del gas”. Con i suoi 110 mila abitanti, appoggiata sul circolo polare artico, Novij Urengoi riveste un’enorme importanza, dato che possiede i più importanti giacimenti di gas naturale del mondo. È da qui che arriva quasi l’80 per cento del gas russo e quasi il 20 per cento di quello europeo. Il gas che Eni compra in Russia arriva proprio da qui. Eni ha contribuito, fin dagli anni Settanta, allo sviluppo di quest’area, finanziata in gran parte tramite i contratti che Gazprom aveva stipulato proprio con Eni e con gli altri grandi monopolisti europei per la fornitura di gas naturale.

Perché Eni è arrivata a Novij Urengoi per prima, perché nel settembre del 1999 ha acceso in una già fredda serata di neve dei fuochi artificiali nel cielo della città che si trova più al nord? Perchè ha costruito un percorso di amicizia e collaborazione fatta di reciproca fiducia, un rapporto che durerà per sempre. Eni è il maggior partner commerciale della Russia (il maggior acquirente di gas russo a livello societario), uno dei maggiori investitori europei e copre il 90% dell'interscambio italo-russo.

Il legame del Cane a sei zampe con l’area di Novij Urengoi è tale per cui nel 1999 venne siglato un gemellaggio con la città di San Donato Milanese, finalizzato allo sviluppo della collaborazione nel campo dell’educazione, della cultura, dello sport e della formazione professionale. Nel 1999 Eni ha aperto a Novij Urengoi una biblioteca multimediale, che ha permesso a molti giovani di chattare e parlare con tutto il mondo.

A conferma degli ottimi rapporti storici con la Russia come la collaborazione commerciale che dura da più di mezzo secolo e con il successo ottenuto nell’asta Yukos dell’aprile 2007, Eni si è assicurata l’accesso ad una parte delle immense risorse presenti in quest’area, ponendo così una bandierina italiana in questa zona, al di sopra del circolo polare artico.

Novij Urengoi è una città che ha del miracoloso, ma d’inverno il termometro può scendere a -50 e c’è solo un’ora di luce al giorno. Un manto di ghiaccio che solo per pochi mesi all’anno mostra un altro volto fatto di fiumi, laghi, distese verdi. Chi lavora qui deve avere una grande forza di volontà e coraggio, eppure quando la attraversi, quando parli con la gente non ti accorgi nemmeno di trovarti in una delle zone più remote ed inaccessibili del pianeta.

stato sempre perseguito nel massimo rispetto di rigide norme ambientali, stabilite per salvaguardare l’ecosistema ed i Nenets che abitano questa terra seguendo gli usi ed i costumi che i loro antenati hanno tramandato loro.

Oggi ci sono uomini e donne Eni che vogliono contribuire allo sviluppo dei giacimenti, mantenendo quel rigore e quel rispetto per l’ambiente e per le culture locali che ha sempre distinto il Cane a sei zampe. I giacimenti offrono interessanti opportunità, le prime stime parlano di una produzione di oltre 500 mila barili di olio equivalente al giorno entro il 2016. Le risorse stimate nei giacimenti di cui Eni è socia al 30 per cento sono pari ad oltre 5 miliardi di barili di olio equivalente. Questa attività insieme al Blue Stream, al South Stream e alla possibilità di partecipare nel progetto Baltic LNG rappresentano i tasselli fondamentali nell’ambito della strategia integrata di Eni nel gas in Russia.

WHERE GAS SEES THE LIGHT OF DAY

by MARCO ALVERÀ he feeling you have upon arriving at Novy Urengoy is one of having arrived at the borderline of the world, which it seems you can’t go beyond. Actually, this place is much closer to us Italians than we can imagine; every time we turn on the stove, the boilers, and we warm ourselves, the gas entering our homes comes mostly from here, from Novy Urengoy, from north-western Siberia.

It’s true that it doesn’t reach us straight off, it must, indeed, go on a long trip which lasts about a week and five thousand kilometres, crossing four countries and a tremendous number of rivers, lakes and railway lines.

Thirty years ago, Novy Urengoy wasn’t there. On the maps there were only rivers, great lakes and vast planes inhabited by reindeer, by Nenets, the indigenous nomads, and by a few tech-

nicians searching for black gold.

Today, Novy Urengoy is a real “gas town”. With its 110 thousand inhabitants, located on the arctic circle, Novy Urengoy has an enormous importance, as it has one of the biggest natural gas fields in the world. Almost 80 percent of Russian gas and 20 percent of European gas comes from here. The gas Eni buys in Russia comes from here.

Eni has contributed since the Seventies to the development of this area, financed mostly by the contracts Gazprom made with Eni and with the other major European natural gas monopolists for the supply of natural gas.

Why did Eni arrive in Novy Urengoy first? Why did it light up fireworks in a cold, snowy night in September, 1999, in this northernmost of towns? Because it built a path of friendship and cooperation made of mutual trust, a relationship which will last forever. Eni is Russia’s largest trade partner (the purchaser of the largest amount of Russian gas at the company level), one of the main European investors and accounts for 90% of overall Russian-Italian trade.

The bond of the “Six-Legged Dog” with the area of Novy Urengoy is such that a twinning with the town of San Donato Milanese was signed in 1999, for the development of cooperation in the fields of education, culture, spor ts and professional training. In 1999, Eni opened a multimedia library in Novy Urengoy, which allowed many young people to chat and talk with the whole world.

Confirming the excellent historical relations with Russia such as the commercial collaboration which has lasted over half a century and with the success achieved at the Yukos auction in April 2007, Eni has garnered access to part of the immense resources present in the area, thus erecting an Italian flag in this zone, above the arctic circle.

Novy Urengoy is a city which has some miraculous features, but in winter, temperatures can fall to minus 50 degrees Centigrade and there is only one hour of daylight per day. A blanket of ice lays over the region, lifting only for a few months each year to uncover another face, made of rivers, lakes and green expanses. Those who work here must have strong willpower and courage, yet when you go through it, when you speak to the people, it’s easy to forget you are in one of the most remote and inaccessible areas of the planet.

The development of Novy Urengoy’s oil industr y has always been pursued with the utmost respect for strict environmental regulations, established to safeguard the ecosystem and the Nenets who live in this land following the customs and traditions their ancestors bequeathed to them.

Today, there are men and women from Eni who wish to contribute to the development of the fields, maintaining that rigour and that respect for the environment and for local cultures which has always distinguished the Six-Legged Dog. The deposits offer interesting opportunities; early estimates are of production in excess of 500 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day by the end of 2016. The estimated resources of the deposits Eni has a 30 percent stake in are of over 5 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

This activity, along with the Blue Stream, the South Stream, and the chance to take par t in the Baltic LNG project are key points in Eni’s integrated strategy for gas in Russia.

The director, turning back to his early passion for photography, captures in black and white the rarefied atmospheres and transmits the vibrant suggestions deriving from firsthand experience of remote places and people.

è una figura retorica, si chiama ossimoro e consiste nell’accostare tra loro due parole in contraddizione. Qualche esempio: ghiaccio bollente, un silenzio assordante. Novij Urengoi e la Siberia, come si vedrà, contengono troppi ossimori. Contrasti stupefacenti. Contraddizioni apparenti. Ci sono tante Siberie. Una di queste è Novij Urengoi. C’è la Siberia dei boschi senza fine di abeti e di betulle, foreste tagliate da fiumi così larghi che non si vede la sponda opposta. C’è la Siberia dei monti Altai, coperti da una prateria

d’erba fitta, densa e corta. C’è la Siberia delle steppe verso il Kazakhstan, ondulate senza orizzonte. Minimo comune denominatore: dovunque, in tutte le Siberie, ci sono zanzare a milioni; nei geli del nord e nei deserti del sud, ogni persona all’aperto è assalita da centinaia di zanzare insieme, affamate di una fame tartara. SIBERIA, LAND OF CONTRASTS

here is a rhetorical figure called oxymoron and it consists in combining two contradictory words. For instance: hot ice, a deafening silence. Novy Urengoy and Siberia, as you’ll see, contain too many

oxymorons. Amazing contrasts. Apparent contradictions.

There many Siberias. One of them is Novy Urengoy. There is the Siberia of endless fir and birch woodlands, forests cut across by rivers so wide you can’t see the other bank. There is the Siberia of the Altai mountains, blanketed with thick, dense and short grassland. There is the Siberia of steppes spreading out towards Kazakhstan, undulating with no horizon. One thing they have in common: everywhere, across all Siberias there are millions of mosquitoes; in the icy north and in the southern deserts, everybody out in the open is assaulted by hundreds

artico. Sotto i piedi non c’è terra, ma una sabbia spessa e gialla, a grani grossi come alcune spiagge della Calabria o della Liguria. Questa spiaggia senza confini, ondulata con le dune, d’estate è punteggiata da alberi ed erba alta e salmastra, come quella al margine delle spiagge incolte italiane. Gli alberi sono bassi, non più di due o tre metri d’altezza: poderosi di diametro, ricchi di foglie nella bella stagione, non crescono alti perché nella sabbia le radici riescono a penetrare di poco. Sotto, basta scavare anche con una vanga, c’è quella che può sembrare una roccia impenetrabile, e invece è il permafrost, il ghiaccio permanente: sabbia e acqua ghiacciata, perché il caldo dell’estate riesce a sciogliere solamente la prima parte del terreno ma più sotto il ghiaccio sabbioso è duro come cemento. Poco lontano da Urengoi, a cinquanta metri di lato da una strada che taglia dritta il sabbione e le boscaglie di betulline e abeti nani, c’è il monumento al Polarnyi Krug, il Circolo Polare. È una sfera armillare fatta con cerchi d’acciaio siderurgico; i cerchi sono dipinti di celeste con vernice da fabbrica. L’estetica del lavoro. Quando è estate, quando le zanzare affamate come circassi formano nuvole nell’aria, il sole rimane basso nel cielo quasi tutta la giornata, come in un’alba senza fine; a fine giugno c’è appena un accenno di tramonto e subito è il giorno dopo. Nelle mezze stagioni, la durata del giorno cambia velocissima, ogni giorno è assai più breve, o più lungo, di quello che precedeva. L’inverno ha pochissima luce e le zanzare calmucche scompaiono. A fine dicembre, quasi tutto il giorno è notte. Solamente attorno a mezzogiorno si vede a levante un po’ di chiarore nel cielo e il sole si sporge appena, minuscola e pallida pallina da pingpong. Dicono che d’inverno in Siberia c’è freddo. A Novij Urengoi, quando ci sono venti gradi sotto zero si chiudono le scuole. Bisognerebbe farlo sapere ai nostri ragazzi coccolati, che protestano se c’è un po’ di neve per terra. A trenta sotto zero, chiudono anche gli uffici e le fabbriche. Quando ci sono trenta gradi sotto zero non nevica. Anche a meno dieci non nevica, perché l’umidità viene brinata prima ancora di essere pensata. A meno trenta, l’aria è ferma e ghiaccia. Chi cammina a meno trenta sul marciapiede della strada centrale di Novij Urengoi apre nell’aria un tunnel di caldo (di caldo? di aria meno ghiacciata). Se cammini anche tu, capisci se qualche minuto fa è passato qualcuno perché attraversi il tunnel aperto nell’aria dall’altro passante. Al chiuso il riscaldamento è asfissiante: addirittura venti gradi (la differenza con l’esterno è come se nelle nostre case ci fossero quaranta gradi), le orecchie scottano e le guance bruciano. Bisogna portarsi in borsa scarpe leggere, da calzare al posto di quelle foderate non appena si entra al chiuso bollente. In settembre, a Novij Urengoi è estate. Lo dice il calendario: l’autunno comincia il 21 settembre. È estate anche se nevica, e d’estate le donne si vestono (com’è giusto) da estate. Sandali, minigonne, magliettine. Anche a Novij Urengoi, fino al 21 settembre. Davanti al cinema Oktiabr c’è un vortice di neve? Non importa, sandali, minigonna e maglietta con gli strass anche sotto la neve, blu le gambe dal freddo, ma non importa perché è estate ancora per qualche giorno e l’estate va bevuta fino in fondo. Da questo paese dei contrasti, da questo ossimoro, viene il gas che usiamo.

Novy Urengoy’s is the Siberia of the north. It’s a beach, a beach without sea (there you have an oxymoron, a contrast.

The reader will be able to spot the other ones). This beach without sea gently slopes for hundreds of kilometres towards the arctic sea. Under your feet there is no earth, but a thick and yellow sand, with big grains as you can find on some beaches in Calabria or Liguria. This beach with no end, undulating with dunes, in summer is spotted with trees and tall salty grass, like the one lining Italian wild beaches. The trees are low, no more than two or three metres high: wide in diameter, rich in leaves in the fine season, they don’t grow high because the roots cannot penetrate deep into the sand. Below the surface, just digging down with a spade you find what looks like impenetrable rock, in fact it is permafrost, permanent ice mixed with sand, because the summer warmth can melt just the upper layer of the soil, but below the sandy ice is as hard as concrete. A short distance from Urengoy, fifty metres off a road cutting straight across the sandy land and the woods of small birch and dwarf fir trees, there stands the monument to the Polarniy Krug, the Pole Circle. It is an armillary sphere made of steel rings; the rings are painted sky blue with factory paint. The aesthetics of labour. In summer when mosquitoes as hungry as Circassians form swarms in the air, the sun stays low almost through daytime, as with an unending dawn; late in June there is barely a hint of sunset and immediately after the next day is there. In spring and fall, the length of days changes very quickly, every day is much shorter, or much longer, than the previous one. In winter there is very little light and the Kalmuck mosquitoes are gone. In late December, almost the whole day is night. Only around noon you can see a glimmer in the sky, the sun barely reaching out, a tiny and pale ping-pong ball. They say it’s cold in winter in Siberia. In Novy Urengoy, when there are 20 degrees Centigrade below zero they close down the schools. One should tell that to our spoiled kids, who complain when there is a bit of snow on the ground. At 30 below zero, they also shut offices and factories. At 30 below zero snow doesn’t fall, nor does it at minus 10, because moisture turns into frost faster than you can think of. At minus 30, the air is still and icy. Who walks at minus 30 on the sidewalks of the main street of Novy Urengoy opens a tunnel of warmth in the air (of warmth? Of less icy air). If you too walk there, you’ll understand someone else has been there a few minutes earlier because you move through the tunnel the other passer-by has opened in the air. Inside, the heating is stifling (the difference from outside is as if there were 40 degrees in our homes), your ears boil and your cheeks burn. You need to carry light shoes in a bag, and put them on instead of the lined ones as soon as you walk into the hot inside. In September, it is summertime in Novy Urengoy. The calendar says so: autumn starts on September 21. It is summer even if it snows, and in summer women put on summer clothes (as they should).

Sandals, mini-skirts, t-shirts. They do so also in Novy Urengoy, up to September 21. Is there a whirlwind of snow in front of the Oktiabr movie house? Doesn’t matter, sandals, mini-skirt and shiny t-shirt even with the snow falling, legs blue with cold, it doesn’t matter because it is summer for a few days more and summer must be thoroughly enjoyed. From this land of contrasts, from this oxymoron, comes the gas we use at home.

LA CITTÀ THE CITY Urengoi, secondo una leggenda nordica significa “figlia del Sole”. Oggi Novij Urengoi, nella Siberia nordoccidentale, vuol dire soprattutto “città del gas”.

Lontana 2400 chilometri da Mosca e 4700 da Roma, ha solo 27 anni e sorge su un territorio che contiene più di tre quarti del metano prodotto dalla Russia e oltre un quinto delle riserve mondiali. È da qui che parte il gas che arriva, attraverso migliaia di chilometri di metanodotti, fino alle nostre case.

Today, Novy Urengoy, in north-western Siberia, means first and foremost, “gas city”. At a distance of 1,490 miles from Moscow and 2,920 miles from Rome, the town is just 27 years old, and rises in an area holding more than three quarters of the natural gas produced in Russia and over a fifth of the world’s reserves. It is from here that the gas sets off on its journey through thousands of miles of pipelines to arrive to our homes.

UN LUNGO INVERNO. Pochissime ore di luce e temperature che raggiungono i -30/-35 gradi con punte fino a - 50 gradi. Il giorno più corto dell’anno dura appena un’ora e 17 minuti. Mentre la breve estate siberiana conta 35 giorni in tutto: questo è il tempo che la natura concede alla “bella stagione”. La temperatura estiva non supera i 15 gradi con forti escursioni notturne.

ARTE E VALORI. Grandi piazze e viali larghissimi tra reminescenze socialiste e amore per la tradizione. Nel monumento in queste pagine è riscontrabile l’estetica del socialismo del nuovo corso: un “inno al lavoro”, ma niente culto della personalità.

FORMAZIONE E CULTURA. Museo del gas, dedicato alla principale risorsa della città, fonte di lavoro e di benessere sociale. Molta attenzione è dedicata all’educazione e ai servizi. Oggi a Novij Urengoi ci sono 38 scuole materne, 20 scuole e 15 istituti di specializzazione. Lo Yamal Oil and Gas University prepara i professionisti per l’industria energetica di domani.

EDUCATION AND CULTURE. The Gas Museum, dedicated to the city’s main resource, source of jobs and social wellbeing. Much attention is devoted to education and services. Today, Novy Urengoy has 38 nursery schools, 20 schools, and 15 specialist institutes, as well as museums, libraries, a 1000-seat auditorium and theatres, one of which is dedicated to plays for children. The Yamal Oil and Gas University coaches professionals for tomorrow’s energy industry.

RELIGIONE. Caratteristica chiesetta ortodossa in legno. In Russia i non religiosi sono il 72,4%, i cristiani ortodossi il 16,3%, i musulmani il 10,0%, i cristiani protestanti lo 0,9% e gli ebrei lo 0,4%.

LE PERSONE PEOPLE

All’inizio degli anni Ottanta, l’industria del gas ha portato nel cuore della Siberia molti lavoratori impegnati negli impianti produttivi.

Successivamente sono arrivate le loro famiglie che hanno ricostruito un fitto tessuto sociale trasformando i primi insediamenti-dormitorio in una vera cittĂ . Novij Urengoi ha 110 mila abitanti e il 30% di essi non ha ancora compiuto 18 anni.

In the early 80s, the gas industry had brought many people to the heart of Siberia to work in the production plants.

Afterwards, their families arrived, reconstructing a dense social fabric and turning the early dormitory-settlements into a true town. Novy Urengoy has 110 thousand inhabitants, 30% of whom are under 18 years of age.

ARCHITETTURE DI GHIACCIO. Le difficili condizioni climatiche non scoraggiano le attività all’aria aperta: i cittadini di Novij Urengoi sono molto abili a “lavorare” il ghiaccio creando veri e propri castelli sottozero, per la gioia dei bambini.

ICE ARCHITECTURE. Living standards in Urengoy are close to those in Moscow. The harsh climate does not discourage open air activities: the citizens of Novy Urengoy are very skilled at modelling ice and creating real subzero castles, for the children’s enjoyment.

NUOVI CITTADINI. L’industria del gas ha favorito lo sviluppo economico e anche l’incremento demografico.

La città cresce: ogni anno nascono 1400 bambini.

CIBO E TRADIZIONE. Un vecchio forno costruito in pietra tipica della zona a nord della Russia. Oggi questi forni non esistono quasi piÚ, sostituiti da quelli elettrici. Il pane prodotto è il lepeshka, fatto di uova e burro che si può mangiare insieme alla panna acida. In questo tipo di forno si prepara anche lo khaciapuri, lavorato solo con farina e acqua. Il pane khaciapuri si mangia con il formaggio salato, caratteristico delle zona siberiana.

FOOD AND TRADITION. An old oven built with a stone that’s typical of the north region of Russia. Very few of these ovens are still around. They were replaced by electric ovens. The bread they make locally is the leplshka, which is made with eggs and butter and can be eaten with sour cream. In the same kind of oven they bake hachapury, made with just water and flour. You eat hachapury bread with salted cheese, is typical of the Siberian area.

TROPICI SOTTO ZERO. Superando estreme difficoltà è stato ricostruito un ambiente esotico. Un privilegio per gli abitanti siberiani che possono avere una conoscenza diretta di piante e animali provenienti da realtà tanto remote.

SUBZERO TROPICS. An exotic environment has been recreated overcoming extreme difficulties. It is a privilege for Siberian inhabitants, who can have first-hand knowledge of plants and animals from places so far away.

GAZPROM TV. A Novij Urengoi la Gazprom ha la possibilità di trasmettere notizie di proprio interesse in alcune fasce orarie presso la TV locale. L'ufficio che si occupa di ciò è la Urengoigazprom TV che fa parte della direzione per le relazioni esterne della Società.

GAZPROM TV. In Novy Urengoy Gazprom can transmit the news relevant to it at specific times through the local Tv Station. The office taking care of this is Urengoigazprom TV, which is part of the company’s public relations office.

IL GEMELLAGGIO. In basso il sindaco di Novij Urengoi con la civetta, simbolo della città. Nel 1998 è stato firmato a Novij Urengoi un patto di gemellaggio tra la cittadina russa e il comune di San Donato Milanese. Obiettivo dell’accordo è lo sviluppo della collaborazione nel campo dell’educazione e della gioventù, della cultura, dello sport e della formazione professionale.

THE TWINNING. Below, the town mayor of Novy Urengoy with a owl, symbol of the town. In 1998, a twinning pact was signed in Novy Urengoy between the Russian town and the town of San Donato Milanese. The goal of the agreement is the development of cooperation in the field of education youth, culture, sports and professional training.

L’IMPIANTO THE PLANT

All’estremo nord dell’immenso territorio russo, ci sono i più grandi giacimenti di gas naturale del mondo, scoperti per caso da un nomade secondo la leggenda popolare.

Valutati in più di 58.000 miliardi di metri cubi di riserve, e con una produzione di oltre 530 miliardi di metri cubi l’anno, contribuiscono anche, in misura consistente, a soddisfare la domanda del sistema energetico europeo.

In the extreme north of the immense Russian territory, there are the largest deposits of natural gas in the world, discovered accidentally by a nomad, folk legends say. With estimated reserves exceeding 58,000 billion cubic metres and a production of over 530 billion cubic metres per year, these gasfields contribute substantially to meeting European energy demands.

ACCORDO STRATEGICO. Nel novembre 2006, Eni e Gazprom hanno sottoscritto un Accordo Strategico che prevede la creazione di un’alleanza internazionale che permetterà alle due società di realizzare progetti comuni nel midstream e downstream del gas naturale, nell’upstream petrolifero e nella cooperazione tecnologica.

L’intesa prevede l’estensione della durata dei contratti di fornitura di gas a Eni, fino al 2035, confermando Eni come primo cliente mondiale di Gazprom.

STRATEGIC AGREEMENT. In November 2006, Eni and Gazprom signed a Strategic Agreement for the creation of an international alliance that will allow the two companies to work in joint projects in midstream and downstream natural gas sectors, in upstream oil and in technological cooperation. The agreement includes the extension of gas supply contracts with Eni to 2035, confirming Eni’s position as Gazprom’s chief client in the world.
