DO MORE BE MORE Cancer Survivor Program Makes A Difference

TWELFTH PAGE AD SPACE

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is a researchbased physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their total health. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer care in spirit, mind, and body. The YMCA of Greater Omaha offers this 12-week group training program at 9 of its locations. It includes a YMCA 3-month family membership for the participants and their family.

“LIVESTRONG® and our dedicated trainers helped restore my body and my peace of mind. I was surrounded by people who had been where I’d been and were planning to LIVE and live fully. So many support groups bring you in contact with people who are just trying to make things as good as they can be until cancer finally takes them. LIVESTRONG® put me in touch with a group of new friends who share my commitment to living a more grateful and fulfilling life - beginning with physical fitness.” “As my body grew stronger I moved farther and farther away from my fear. Today, I can honestly say that I rarely feel afraid. And, I have the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program to thank for that.” says Jenkins. Visit www.metroymca.org or contact your Y location for more info.

“The LIVESTRONG® program did so much to restore my quality of life after I completed chemotherapy for stage III colon cancer. My body was so weak that I was intimidated by the thought of doing any sort of physical activity. Just as importantly, once I finished chemo I felt like I wasn’t doing anything to fight the disease and this took an awful emotional toll on me.” says Lorie Jenkins, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA alumni from the Armbrust YMCA.

WHAT IS FITNESS? What is fitness? It’s a simple question that will generate either a puzzled look or heated debate. Every New Year thousands upon thousands of resolution hopefuls pack gyms across Omaha with new determination to shed unwanted pounds and get fit. Unfortunately many do so with little understanding of what fitness really is. Biologically, Webster defines fitness as “the capacity of an organism to survive and transmit its genotype to reproductive offspring as compared to competing organisms.” In other words, is a person capable of producing viable children? Barring a medical complication the vast majority of us are technically “fit” within this understanding. However, propagation of the species is the last thing our local gyms are considering when we see their latest ads to entice us to join.

Good health or physical condition, generally as a result exercise combined with proper nutrition, is what most will agree as being fit. This basic definition can take on a life of its own should you decide to explore the various modalities of exercise: strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscle stamina, and power. Add athletic components like agility, stability, and coordination and you’ve opened Pandora’s Box. Fitness takes on many forms depending on the point of view. A marathon runner is incredibly fit unless he is attempting to compete in a power lifting competition. A bodybuilder may have perfect symmetry and proportion but cannot swim a pool length without gasping for air. So, you need to ask what form of fitness you envision for yourself.

The important piece is to create high but attainable fitness goals for you and have a plan. Be specific in your fitness goals so that you may put a concerted effort toward achieving them. Your goals can and likely will change but aimlessly walking into the gym with no plan generally does not lend toward progress and results in frustration, burn-out and even regression. Using a personal trainer is a great way to remain focused on the end objective; gym buddies are good as well assuming they are a source of motivation and not distraction. Have a clear picture of what you are working toward in your fitness journey, make a plan and go get it!
