URBANISM

Aquatic Rooms

LOWER MANHATTAN MASTER PLAN During an urbanism design course in New York City, students were asked to develop a master plan for the surrounding context of Williamsburg Bridge in Lower Manhattan. The Aquatic Rooms proposal densifies the unused bridge structures and underbridge space, and duplicates the green Manhattan waterfront on the Brooklyn side. The towers are located at the main bridge structures. Upper levels offer housing, followed by office space and commerce. Floating platforms under the bridge allow various civic and institutional programs: gymnasium, public pools, theaters, parks, and a marina.

Scaling Apartments San Francisco Housing Complex

Housing | Scaling Apartments

13

Scaling Apartments is a housing complex for the San Francisco community in Puerto Rico. As its name states, it scales its height to the surrounding context. The lowest parts adapts to a more suburban area and where the tallest reacts to a more dense avenue. The building per se contains a varieties of apartments, from single to two stories apartments, and each building has one or two terraces on the highest floors. The inner part of the complex contains the circulation for the residence, thus all the apartments have their primary view to the context. This outer facade works the entrance more at a pedestrian level, where some residence enter their home from the street side at ground level.

19 Housing | RaĂces Hotel Fall | 2010

RaĂces Hotel is a conservation project of three historic buildings from Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The building that was proposed to be demolished, because of its rough conditions, contained a tree on the inside that served as its structure for floors and antique walls. Thus, the proposal creates a building that like a tree starts to invade the inside of the other three buildings. The main entrance of the hotel is through the historic buildings, afterwards one chooses to stay in the new building or the historic buildings. On the rooftop a club is located where a guest can have a night life with a view of the Old San Juan Bay.

Civic/Institutional | Living with the Trees

27

Living with the trees is a fully sustainable Research Center, located in El Yunque Puerto Rico. By the use of solar panels, used-water filtration and cross ventilation, the project can sustain itself in the tropical forest. The project itself is divided into three parts: the first part is the entrance, where you begin to walk through the trees. After walking through the trees and exploring the forest from a ground perspective one then goes half way underground into the next “block buildings” where the forest can then be explored from a ground perspective. The final phase of the project are the two towers, the living quarters for the scientists, that coexist with the trees on the lowest part of the site. In here, the researchers can work, sleep, and wake up to the view above and in between the trees.

Once inside, an elevator and a staircase rise 5 stories to the student center main lunge. There a bridge connects the student center to the Architecture school’s main building.

PVC + Drill + Light

Drilled Lamp, although a simple design, is a different way to light your house with. With indirect red light it reflects light onto the walls. Design with recyclable materials like an old PVC tube, a piece of acrylic, and an old power cord, it’s an affordable design with very common materials that provides a filtered and indirect light.
