WELCOME TO ALDEBURGH CINEMA...

Enthusiasm and passion take us far but we still have to hit the right notes along the way - rest assured our programme does just that. An exciting, broad range of great new films lies ahead, headed by Florence Foster Jenkins, Stephen Frears’ eagerly awaited new comedy that sees Meryl Streep take on the role of the world’s worst singer – so much for hitting the right notes then. Anomalisa is a grown-ups’ animated film like no other, Aldeburgh Cinema’s festival patron Tom ‘The Night Manager’ Hiddleston shines in the stunning High-Rise, and Helen Mirren adds gravitas to drone warfare thriller Eye in the Sky. There are heartthrobs Matthias Schoenaerts in Disorder, and Ewan McGregor and Stellan Skarsgard in Our Kind of Traitor, the latter based on the acclaimed John Le Carre novel. The riveting, and revving, Speed Sisters tear up their cars’ tyres and our screen, don’t miss if you haven’t seen it yet in one of our special festival preview shows! Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan comes on the back of its Cannes ‘Golden Palm’ win while The Lady in the Van and Oscar winners The Revenant and Bridge of Spies are back by popular demand. Last but not least there is a very special presentation of Sir Ian McKellen’s Richard III, and NT Live Encore shows commence with Arthur Miller’s magnificent A View from the Bridge.

Michael Stone (Thewlis) is a motivational author jaded by failed relationships, whose encounter with an insecure but kindhearted fan (Jason Leigh) triggers a mutual epiphany. Our protagonists’ emotions are somehow rendered all the more powerfully by the stop-motion animation, the whole enterprise proving to be an idiosyncratically beautiful, lifeaffirming gem.

Although she was a prodigious child pianist, it wasn’t until 1909, at the age of 41, that Florence Foster Jenkins (Streep) could begin to realise her considerable operatic ambitions. A substantial inheritance enabled her to fund her own private recitals, undeterred by her inability to sing in tune or to maintain tempo. By then separated from her husband, she took up with caddish British actor St Clair Bayfield (Grant, giving a career-best performance), who both managed her and indulged her fantasies – even to the point of a huge huge Carnegie Hall concert in 1944. Revered director Stephen Frears (Philomena) and screenwriter Nicholas Martin have fashioned an amusing and often poignant biopic of a woman driven by self-deceit whose willing accomplices included her long-suffering accompanist Cosmé McMoon (Simon Helberg), if not Bayfield’s long-suffering wife (Rebecca Ferguson).

landscapes & assemblages Marianne Koby Johnson is returning to the Aldeburgh Cinema Gallery for this solo exhibition. She will be showing atmospheric landscapes in oil on panel, painted en plein air in soft colours. Subjects include fields, trees and water with some seascapes.

She has also been working on a small series of ash tree paintings in mixed media and oil, and prints. Her assemblages are more abstract, constructed from eroded organic or manmade objects, gathered and hoarded for their aesthetic or textural qualities. They are wall hung or free standing.
