UNAMID’s core mandate is to protect civilians. However, in its six years of operation, there have been cases where UNAMID’s military personnel have been the only people on the ground in places where civilians are in need of assistance.

Nearly two million people are living in camps for displaced people across Darfur.

Many others struggle with security issues in the villages spread across the region.

While Sudan has the primary responsibility to protect civilians in Darfur, UNAMID’s military peacekeepers support Government and community initiatives in protecting civilians.

Across Darfur, UNAMID has deployed some 15,000 military personnel who hail from Ethiopia, Rwanda, Gambia, China, Mongolia, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania and Burkina Faso, among other countries.

After more than six years, UNAMID has built nearly 50 compounds, team sites and community police centres in camps for displaced people. All of them are secured, 24 hours each day, by UNAMID’s military personnel, who are strategically posted around these compounds to ensure the security of UNAMID’s premises.
