JOHNSON After starting his season in Shanghai at the World Golf ChampionshipsHSBC Champions, the Carolina Bomber finally busted through with his first major championship at this year’s 116th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club (Pa.), highlighted by a confounding rules infraction that triggered a wave of discussion during the final round. Johnson entered the final round trailing 54-hole leader Shane Lowry by two strokes before firing a final-round 1-under 69 – despite the controversial one-stroke penalty for his ball moving on the par-4 5th green. He followed up with another big win in his next start at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational posting back-to-back victories for the first time in his career. Johnson shot consecutive weekend rounds of 66 to rally from three strokes behind at the start of final round for his third career World Golf Championships victory. By winning the BMW Championship on September 12, Johnson joined Hero World Challenge host Tiger Woods as the only players to win a major, WGC and FedExCup playoff event in the same season. Woods did it in 2007. Johnson has now won at least one tournament in each of his first nine seasons on the PGA TOUR (the TOUR’s current best streak). By comparison, Woods won in his first 14 seasons, from1996 through 2009.
