A Message from the President It gives me great pleasure to introduce the 13th edition of the Ayrshire Golf Association Year Book, in my second year as Association President. I am delighted to be re-elected as President for 2016 and would like to thank everyone for giving me this opportunity. 2015 will go down as historic year for golf, both in Ayrshire and Nationally.

James McMurdo

On the 30th March 2015 the Scottish Golf Union agreed to amalgamate with the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association and Scottish Golf Limited came in to existence on 1st October 2015. This was a vital step forward for the game.

On the weekend from 15th to 17th May 2015, the Ayrshire Team of Jack McDonald, Tommy McInally, John Shanks, Stuart Robin, Scott Brown & Keith Hamilton won the Scottish Area Team Championship at Blairgowrie Golf Club, beating Perth & Kinross, Renfrewshire and Dunbartonshire in the Final. These players were also members of the team that won the West of Scotland Gents A league for the first time in many years. We also had a representative in the GB&I Walker Cup team, who played the USA at Royal Lytham & St Annes in September. Jack McDonald won 2 ½ out of a possible 3 points to help secure a historic win for GB&I. On the domestic scene, 2015 proved an excellent year for many our players and I would like to congratulate all the winners in county events and thank all the members of Ayrshire clubs who supported County competitions during the season. In the West of Scotland Leagues, I mentioned earlier that the Gents won the A league by winning 4 out of their 5 matches. Unfortunately, the Boys & Youths teams both finished mid table. I would like to thank the 3 team managers and wish them all the best for 2016. As I reflect on 2015, I would like to say a sincere thank you to all the Executive Members for their efforts on behalf of the Association and its member clubs. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those clubs who gave up their facilities to allow us to stage our championships and team matches throughout the year. Your support is greatly appreciated.

James McMurdo

2015 Review of the Year 2015 marked the end of 27 years of service to the Ayrshire Golf Association by Ronnie Potts of Irvine Ravenspark. In his exceptional period of service he served in almost every position within the organisation, the highlights being his period as President from 1998 – 2000 and managing the successful Scottish Area team Championship winning team at Tain in 2008. The Ayrshire representative to the Scottish Golf Union in recent years, Ronnie decided that the successful amalgamation of the SGU and SLGA into one national governing body would be an appropriate time to retire from involvement at an area level also, and he stood down at the AGM in November 2015 with the appreciation and thanks of clubs and Area Officials for his long service.

Ronnie Potts

Coaching Scott Gilchrist carried forward the successful re introduction of a local coaching programme in 2015 with the return to an Ayrshire specific scheme, from the SGU Development centre programme, being well received by players and parents alike. Due to the closure of golf facilities at Inverclyde for an 18 month period in the autumn of 2015, the arrangements for the 2015 – 2016 winter programme needed to be completely redeveloped, but with the help of the County Coaches and the Brunston Castle and Prestwick Golf Clubs, alternative facilities have been identified and the coaching programme will be scheduled for early 2016 through to the start of the season. Scott Gilchrist will again lead on the coaching portfolio in 2016. Proposals are also being considered to provide other coaching avenues within the county, with the aim of early identification and development of young talent. The efforts of member clubs in providing coaching to young players was again supported in 2015 with the continuation of the club coaching grant scheme, to assist member clubs with the development and delivery of coaching schemes within their club. The scheme will be in place again in 2016. Our thanks must once again be recorded for the efforts of our coaching professionals Graham Ross (Inverclyde), Richard Gordon (Ayr Belleisle) and David Fleming (Prestwick), who continue to develop the Ayrshire squad within the coaching framework.

Youth Team Robert Wilson again managed the youth team for a fifth successive year in 2015. In what proved to be a difficult campaign, two wins and three defeats in the West Of Scotland league left the Ayrshire team in mid table in the championship, which was won by a very strong Lanarkshire side. Robert Wilson will continue as Youth team Manager in 2016. The 3 player youth team who represented Ayrshire in the Glasgow Youths Championship, Shaun Hedger (West Kilbride), Murray McCrone (Troon Welbeck) and Luke Murdoch (Loudoun) turned in a good performance to finish in sixth place The annual match with the South Of Scotland, played at Irvine in March 2015, resulted in a 13 – 5 win for Ayrshire.

Boys Team Milton Murray returned to manage the boys team in 2015. The campaign in the West Of Scotland league started with a narrow defeat to defending champions Dumbartonshire and was followed by a win in the second match. Over the remaining three matches however, player availability issues contributed to three successive defeats and a second bottom place in the league in 2015. Ayrshire did not feature in the medal places at the 2015 Scottish Boys Area Team Championship at Tulliallan, the team of Murray McCrone (Troon Welbeck), Jack Thomas (Irvine), Luke Murdoch (Loudoun) and Jack Broun (Turnberry) finishing well off the pace in 15th place. Milton Murray will again lead on the administration of the boys teams in 2016.

County A Team Ricky Magee stood down from managing the A team in early 2015, after six years at the helm and John Rushbury, assisted by Allan Muir and Gordon Boyle took on the team management. In what proved to be an outstanding season, the Ayrshire team won the Scottish Area team Championship in May at Blairgowrie and finished the season by winning the West Of Scotland League title for the first time in 27 years to give the County the two trophies in the same season for the first time ever. The Scottish Area Team Championships in May at Blairgowrie saw the Ayrshire team of Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Cuthbert), Tommy McInally (Loudoun), John Shanks (Irvine), Keith Hamilton (Ayr Belleisle) and Scott Brown (Turnberry) qualify for the Matchplay stages in sixth place. In the first round of Matchplay, Ayrshire beat the host county, and pre tournament favourites, Perth and Kinross. Jack McDonald beat Amateur Champion Bradley Neil by 2 & 1 on his home course in their singles match whilst Scott Brown and John Shanks won their respective ties by 2 & 1 and 4 & 3 to secure the required 3 ponts for victory. With a semi final place assured, the foursomes tie involving Keith Hamilton and Tommy McInally, and the final singles tie involving Stuart Robin, were agreed as half matches, to give Ayrshire a 4 – 1 win overall. In the semi finals Ayrshire defeated defending champions Renfrewshire by 3 ½ - 1 ½. Jack McDonald again led the way with a 4 & 3 singles win over Scotland internationalist Matt Clark, and although Scott Brown lost his tie by 4 & 3, a 4 & 2 foursomes victory from Keith Hamilton and Tommy McInally and a one hole win for Stuart Robin I his singles tie gave Ayrshire the three points required for a place in the final. In the remaining tie John Shanks and former Amateur Champion Craig Watson agreed a half, giving Ayrshire a 3 ½ - 1 ½ win. In the final, Ayrshire faced the leading qualifiers, Dumbartonshire, and took a crucial 2 – 1 lead after the morning foursomes. Jack McDonald teamed up with Scott Brown for a 5 & 4 win and despite the pairing of Keith Hamilton and Tommy McInally tasting defeat for the first time in the competition, by 3 & 2, the pairing of John Shanks and Stuart Robin won through by 4 & 3 to give Ayrshire the advantage going into the afternoon singles. Jack McDonald faced fellow internationalist Euan Ferguson in the lead singles and completed an outstanding performance in the competition with a 3 & 2 win to complete his 100% record for the event and edge Ayrshire closer to the title. A 2 & 1 win by Stuart Robin left Ayrshire just one point away from the title, but defeats for Keith Hamilton and Tommy McInally, by 2 & 1 and 1 hole respectively, left Ayrshire still needing one point from the two remaining ties on the course. The honour of securing the winning point for Ayrshire fell, appropriately, to John Shanks. Along with Tommy McInally, Shanks was in the Ayrshire side Area Team Champions that last won the title in 2008, and after losing the first two holes of his match he fought back to lead by three with four holes remaining. Two putts at the fifteenth were all that were required to secure a 4 & 3 win and victory for Ayrshire. Despite fighting back from three down to lead by two holes with two to play in the final tie remaining on the course, Scott Brown agreed a half with his opponent, giving Ayrshire a final victory by 5 ½ 3 ½ Also in May, the Innes McQueen Trophy was won for the first time by the Ayrshire Ladies County Golf Association team in 2015, with a 3 – 1 win over the Ayrshire Golf Association team at Loudoun. In September the Ayrshire team embarked on the five match series in the West Of Scotland Inter County League, bidding to win the title for the first time in 27 years and end Renfrewshire’s run of 12 successive titles. The team opened their title bid with a 6 ½ - 1 ½ win against Dumbartonshire, over the Turnberry Kintyre course, and followed this with a 6 – 2 away win over Glasgow at Cawder and a 5 ½ - 2 ½ home win over Stirlingshire at Prestwick St Nicholas.

11

Hopes of maintaining their 100% record in the series of matches were dashed when the team suffered a narrow 4 ½ - 3 ½ in their away match against Lanarkshire at Lanark, leaving the team facing a final match showdown, away from home at Bonnyton, with defending champions Renfrewshire for the title. Inspired by Jack McDonald, who was undefeated in his five matches, and Steven Wallace who arrived back in the country from America just three hours before the match and went on to record his fifth win of the five match series, the Ayrshire team edged out the Renfrewshire team by 5 – 3 to take the title. In winning the West Of Scotland title, the team created a little history, giving Ayrshire both the Scottish and West Of Scotland titles in the same season for the first time ever. The 13 players used during the successful campaign were:Steven Wallace, Craig Telfer & Stuart Robin (all Prestwick St Cuthbert), Keith Hamilton & Jim Johnstone (both Ayr Belleisle), Scott Brown & Gordon Boyle (both Turnberry), Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie), John Shanks (Irvine), Tommy McInally (Loudoun), Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle), Malcolm Pennycott (Whiting Bay) and Michael Smyth (Royal Troon).

Tournaments 1n 2015 the current Association President James McMurdo, assisted by Hugh McKenzie John Watt and Mike Hazlewood, continued as tournament administrator, with all events again enjoying good level of entries. The Association presently have nine qualified referees, Alasdair Malcolm, James McMurdo, Iain Harvey, John Rushbury, Scott Gilchrist, Hugh McKenzie, Ricky Magee, John Watt & Mike Hazlewood Thanks are due to all the referees for their contribution towards the successful administration of our championships throughout the season. During the year, Ayrshire Executive members are called upon to assist in the running of national events held within the county whilst individual members also take on the task of the ongoing administration of extended competitions, including the Champion Of Champions, Fourball and Scratch league events, to ensure their smooth and successful conclusion by the end of the playing season. James McMurdo will lead on the delivery of championships in 2016.

Course Rating Allan Muir, assisted by John Rutherford and David McKie and executive members Ricky Magee and Mike Hazlewood, continued to implement the course rating programme in Ayrshire in 2015, ensuring that the courses throughout the country have a rating and Standard Scratch Score that accurately reflects the difficulty of the course. West Kilbride was the only course rated during 2015, although partial ratings were carried out at the request of other courses. Allan Muir and his team will continue to oversee the course rating scheme in 2016.

The Ayrshire Junior Golf League Scott Gilchrist remained as AJGL representative on the County Executive in 2015 and will continue in this role in 2016. Since 1987 the Ayrshire Golf Association and Ayrshire Junior Golf League, have worked closely together in the development of junior golf, with a representative of The League serving on the Ayrshire Golf Association Executive since that time. Billy Tait continued as AJGL Secretary in 2015 with Gavin Scott acting as Assistant Secretary and Robin Baker as Treasurer. The same administration team will continue in 2016.

Press and Publicity The Ayrshire Golf Association web page has been the main vehicle for publicising the work of The Association for over 10 years now, since its establishment in the autumn of 2004, with Association Secretary Alasdair Malcolm administering the web page since its establishment. The weblog continues to prove popular with county players and club members alike, with strong visitor numbers every year, from both Scotland and further afield. Fixture lists, competition results and entry forms are all made available on the web page, which also features links to member clubs own websites and other useful golf links. Local press often use the web page as a source for press articles, which are regularly being reproduced from the weblog in local papers and on golf related websites. Clubs are encouraged to forward anything of interest to Alasdair Malcolm at ayrshire.golf@btinternet.com for possible inclusion on the web page. A facebook page and Twitter account were also added in 2015. The Ayrshire Golf Association Yearbook was produced again in 2015, its twelfth successive year, and the quality production by Ayrshire Media Services who are based in Dukes Road in Troon, has been well received both within the county and beyond. The Association are pleased that Ayrshire Media Services have again produced the yearbook in 2016 and are confident that this publication will continue to prove popular and useful to both members and advertisers alike.

In Memorium As we look back over 2015 we remember friends and golfing colleagues who are no longer with us.

Sam Coulter, the grand old man of Ayrshire junior golf, and to many in local golfing circles simply ‘Mr Maybole’, passed away on Sunday 22nd March 2015, at the age of 92. Over many years, Sam’s contribution both within his club and throughout Ayrshire in general was a significant one. Always interested in the development of junior golf, Sam helped the Maybole junior club to many successes throughout three decades from the 1970’s. Sam Coulter Sam also served his club in various capacities including Secretary, Treasurer, Captain in 1959 and latterly as Honorary President, and also found time to serve the wider county, through The Ayrshire Junior Golf League, serving at various times as Vice Chairman, Chairman and Assistant Secretary, as well as assisting in the activities of The league in so many other, unheralded, ways. It was for his efforts on behalf of the AJGL and the Maybole juniors that Sam was elected an Honorary member of The Ayrshire Junior Golf League in 1980.

A member of Maybole Golf Club for over 65 years, Sam still enjoyed playing golf regularly until a few months before his passing and will be fondly remembered by many friends, Maybole Golf Club members past and present and also his many golfing friends throughout the county of Ayrshire. Dougie Dempster of Ballochmyle Golf Club, the former Ayrshire Junior Golf League representative to The Ayrshire Golf Association, passed away on Tuesday 26th May 2015 after a brave battle against cancer. A great character, Dougie's jovial and friendly manner made him many friends in the wider golfing circles in Ayrshire during his time as junior convener at Ballochmyle Golf Club. Dougie Dempster

It was during his time with the juniors at Ballochmyle that Dougie represented the Ayrshire Junior Golf league on the Ayrshire Golf Association Executive, until the advent of his illness.

Dougie battled cancer with the same stoic, sometimes jovial, but always determined and optimistic attitude that he had developed during his military service, still keeping up to date with friends and golfing acquaintances via social media and encouraging the junior members of Ballochmyle in competition, even though he was not well enough to be present himself. with Dougie's passing Ayrshire golf lost a valued volunteer and many within the wider golfing circles of the county have lost a good friend. William “Bits” Anderson, Scotland’s foremost quiz exponent and a popular caddy at Prestwick Golf Club, died on Sunday 21st June 2015, aged 59, after taking ill on the Prestwick course he described as his ‘Field Of Dreams’. A dyslexia sufferer, he was considered stupid at Prestwick High, and took “time off” to caddy at Prestwick, which began a career which sustained him over many years. Bits had an extensive knowledge of many things and participated in many quizzes and quiz programmes which included wins on Wheel of Fortune, The Weakest Link and,

just a few months before his passing, The Chase, where he shared £60,000 with another competitor, having contributed the vast amount of the prize fund. An ardent supporter of the Tartan Army, and a true ‘Golf Nut’, he was well travelled with both interests, going home and away to support Scotland and visiting Augusta to see The Masters. A well loved and respected character in Prestwick, Bits’ coffin, draped with a saltire and his caddie bib, passed Prestwick Golf Club and a guard of honour made up of his fellow caddies. on its way to a packed St Nicholas Church for the committal service. Turnberry greenkeeping stalwart George Brown passed away in the early hours of Thursday 17th September 2015, at the age of 77. A former chairman of BIGGA, the national greenkeepers association, George was appointed course manager at Turnberry in 1985 and saw the course host many championships during his stewardship, including three Open Championships in 1986, 1994 and 2009. George Brown

Hugh Johnstone M.B.E, passed away in August 2015, at the age of 90. Hugh had many years of involvement with Doon Valley Golf Club, serving the club as Secretary at the time of his passing. A contributor to many local initiatives, he was best known for his involvement with the brass band movement in Dalmellington and further afield, becoming Honorary Vice President of The Brass Band Association a few years ago, and receiving an M.B.E. in 1982 for his services to the brass band movement. Hugh was a remarkable and very popular man in the Doon Valley and beyond and was highly respected by all who knew him

Hugh Johnstone M.B.E

Former Prestwick St Cuthbert and Turnberry Club Champion, and well known Ayrshire golfer, Ronnie McLellan passed away on Tuesday 29th September 2015, after a long fight with ill health.

Ronnie McLellan

A two time champion at Prestwick St Cuthbert in the 1990's and a five time winner of the Turnberry championship, Ronnie's proudest golfing achievement came in 2008 when he finished third in the Seniors Order Of Merit and was selected for the Scotland team who contested the Seniors Home Internationals at Tenby in South Wales, and helped the Scotland team to finish runners up in the championship

The Matt Lygate Trophy which is awarded to the team returning the best scratch score was won by Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club, represented by Robbie Muir, Lewis Caddell, Ewan Milligan & Sean Cook, with a team score of 220 that edged out the early pace setters and host club, Ayr Belleisle, by a single shot. The Ayr Belleisle team of Jack Broun, Jordan Sweeney, Andrew Gordon and Charlie Cameron were scratch runners up on 221, just ahead of Troon Welbeck on 222. Hamish Mills (Largs) retained the Prestwick Circuits Trophy for the best individual scratch score with a three over par 71. AYRSHIRE STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP Tommy McInally (Loudoun ) won the 2015 Ayrshire Strokeplay Championship, over his home course on Sunday 26th April, to complete a hat trick of county strokeplay titles, following his 2003 win at West Kilbride and his second success in 2010 at Prestwick St Cuthbert. In testing conditions, with a strong breeze, McInally recorded a best of the day 68 in the opening round and added a 72 in the afternoon for a total of 140 to give him the title by a single shot over 2013 champion Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Cuthbert) and 3 times winner and defending champion John Shanks (Irvine). LEADING FINAL TOTALS 140 – Tommy McInally (Loudoun) 68-72 141 – Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Cuthbert) 71-70 141 – John Shanks (Irvine) 70–71 142 – Keith Hamilton (Ayr Belleisle) 71-71 143 – Scott Brown (Turnberry) 73-70 143 – Steven Stamper (Turnberry) 73-70 143 – John Haggarty (Loudoun) 70-73 144 – Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle) 72-72 144 – Greg Telfer (Prestwick St Cuthbert) 71-73 145 – Stuart Miller (Kilmarnock Barassie) 73-72

AYRSHIRE MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) won his third Ayrshire Matchplay title on Thursday 7th May at Prestwick St Cuthbert when he beat Stuart Miller (Kilmarnock Barassie) in extra holes in the final, to add to his previous wins in 2011 at Troon Portland and 2013 at Prestwick St Nicholas. In the final, Smyth took the early lead with a birdie three at the first but was pulled back to square when Miller birdied the third. Further birdies at the sixth and eighth gave Smyth a two hole advantage at the turn and when Miller found trouble from the Michael Smyth tee at the tenth, a par four was good enough for Smyth to extend his lead to three. Smyth looked in control of the match, but successive putts at the twelfth and thirteenth that hit the hole and spun out, allowed Miller to take both holes and reduce Smyth’s lead to one. Smyth stopped the rot by taking the fifteenth to go two ahead with three to play, but despite halving the sixteenth, Smyth could not close out the match, missing a putt on the seventeenth for the title then losing the final hole to a birdie, leaving the match all square after 18. Both players narrowly missed their birdie putts on the 19th hole of the match and at the 20th Smyth produced a superb recovery shot from below a tree to salvage a half in par. At the 21st hole, both players reached the par five green in regulation but after Miller’s 15 foot birdie attempt remained above ground, Smyth calmly holed from two feet for a winning birdie and the 2015 Ayrshire Matchplay Championship

20

In the semi finals, Smyth beat John Haggarty (Loudoun) by 4 & 2 whilst Miller beat his good friend and clubmate Euan Brown by 6 & 5. In the quarter final matches, Smyth beat Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Cuthbert) by 2 holes, Haggarty beat John Shanks (Irvine) at the 21st, Miller beat Sandy Walker (Ardeer) by 2 holes and Brown beat Steven Stamper (Turnberry) at the 19th.

THE AYRSHIRE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

17 clubs took part in the 2015 Ayrshire Club Championship competition at Largs on Sunday 5th July, where the hosts, Largs Golf Club, won the R.L. Crawford Trophy and Ayrshire Club Champions title for the second time, their previous success being 11 years earlier, in 2004, when the event was last held over the Largs course. With the best two scores from three counting, and chasing a team score of 144 set by the early pacesetters from Loudoun, the Largs team of Gregor Dickson (71) Iain Macdonald (70) and David Macdonald (75) set a new target of 141. The only other club to seriously challenge the eventual winners were Prestwick St Cuthbert, the team of Graeme Gimson (74), Craig Telfer (74) and Steven Wallace (70) matching Loudoun’s total and taking the runners up place by virtue of the best third score. 141 – Largs 144 – Prestwick St Cuthbert, Loudoun 146 – Troon St Meddans, Troon Welbeck 147 – Irvine 148 – Prestwick 150 – Ballochmyle 151 – West Kilbride 155 – Rowallan Castle, Turnberry 156 – Prestwick St Nicholas, Kilmarnock (Barassie) 158 – New Cumnock 159 – Irvine Ravenspark 161 – Tam O Shanter 167 – Troon Portland Largs GC went on to represent Ayrshire in the Scottish Club Championship competition at Fortrose & Rosemarkie on 20th September where they finished in eighth place, with David Macdonald recording the second best individual performance of the day with a two under par total of 140.

THE AYRSHIRE SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP The 2015 Ayrshire Seniors Championship was played over a tough Irvine Ravenspark course on Tuesday 14th July, and the field of 53 who contested the Sandy Provan Trophy was led by five handicapper Iain McKenzie from Annanhill Golf Club, who took the Ayrshire Seniors title by a single shot from Jim Ryan of Ayr Dalmilling. Jim Ryan had the consolation of winning the 63 – 69 age group category whilst host club members David Brown and Epharim Spence led the other two age group categories. One handicapper Henry Thomson from Irvine Golf Club had the best scratch score with 75. THE AYRSHIRE BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP Craig McKenzie (Troon Welbeck) led from start to finish to win the 2015 Ayrshire Boys Championship at West Kilbride on Thursday 6th August, with the event being sponsored for the first time by sports scholarship consultants United Sports USA as part of a three year agreement. Craig McKenzie

A stiff breeze throughout the day made the championship course a stern test for the competitors and a four over par score of 75, a single shot better than Charlie Cameron (Ayr Belleisle) and Euan Ferguson (Turnberry), with defending champion Jack Thomas (Irvine) a shot further back on 77, gave McKenzie the halfway lead. McKenzie bettered his first round score by one in the afternoon, giving him a total of 149 and the title by four shots from 2014 winner Jack Thomas, who put up a spirited defence of the trophy with his score of 153. Sean Cook (Kilmarnock Barassie) was third on 154, two shots ahead of clubmate Robbie Muir in fourth place. John Lomas (Ayr Belleisle) had the best nett return of the day with a total of 139.

AYRSHIRE BOYS MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP Robbie Muir (Kilmarnock Barassie) won the 2015 Ayrshire Boys Matchplay title at Prestwick Golf Club which was played from Tuesday 11th to Thursday 13th August, beating clubmate Sean Cook in the final by 4 & 2.

Robbie Muir

In the opening round Robbie Muir beat Charlie Cameron (Ayr Belleisle) by 2 & 1 to set up a semi final clash with the new Ayrshire Boys Champion Craig McKenzie (Troon Welbeck, who had defeated Euan Ferguson (Turnberry) by one hole in the first round.

In the other half of the draw the title holder Jack Thomas (Irvine) beat Andrew Gordon (Ayr Belleisle) by 4 & 3 to set up a semi final with Sean Cook, who won his opening tie against Blair Fleming (Troon Welbeck) at the first extra hole. In the semi finals Robbie Muir beat Craig McKenzie by 5 & 4 whilst Sean Cook and Jack Thomas were involved in a titanic battle before Cook defeated Thomas at the sixth extra hole. Robbie Muir was never behind in the final, though the match remained close until Muir gained a two hole advantage at the eleventh. Muir’s lead was extended again when Cook three putted the fourteenth and Muir finally clinched the title by winning the sixteenth hole for a 4 & 2 victory.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS TROPHY COMPETITION Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) won the Ayrshire Champion Of Champions Trophy for the second time on Friday 14th August when he beat Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Cuthbert) in the final at Royal Troon by 3 & 2 in the final, having previously won the title in 2008 as a member of the Troon Portland club. In winning the trophy, the semi finals and final of which are traditionally played over the Old Course at Royal Troon, Moultrie became the first member of the host club to win the title in the championships 40 year history.

Paul Moultrie

44 players started out in at the start of the season in a bid to win the 2015 Champion of Champions title. In the semi finals, Moultrie ended the hopes of Ayrshire Matchplay Championship runner up Stuart Miller (Kilmarnock Barassie) with a 3 & 2 win whilst Robin won through by the same score against Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle), who was runner up in the event in 2013.

23

Moultrie was never behind in the final, winning the first hole with a par and extending his lead with a birdie at the third. Robin soon fought back and a birdie four at the fourth hole by Moultrie was not even good enough for a half, Robin recording an eagle three and then squaring the match with a further birdie at the seventh hole. Moultrie edged into the lead at the turn with a birdie three at the ninth and his lead quickly grew to three holes after Robin found trouble at both the opening holes of the inward nine. Robin could make little inroads into the lead and by the sixteenth Moultrie remained two ahead with three to play, where a winning par five gave him the hole, a 3 & 2 win and the Champion Of Champions title for 2015.

FOURBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 46 clubs took part in the 2015 Ayrshire Fourball Championship, which was won by George and David McCulloch (Brunston Castle), who completed a hat trick of wins in the competition and also became the first pair to retain the title in the events 33 year history. The final was played at Ballochmyle Golf Club on Sunday 13th September, with the Brunston Castle pair facing Andrew MacLeod and John Cook (Rowallan Castle). Fourball Winners David and George McCulloch

The Brunston Castle pair stormed to a decisive early lead, winning the opening three holes and maintaining the advantage to the turn.

Successive birdies at opening two holes of the inward half extended the Brunston Castle team’s lead to five holes with seven remaining but their opponents were not ready to give up the challenge easily, and an eagle two at the twelfth followed by a birdie three at the thirteenth reduced the McCulloch’s lead to three holes with five to play. The defending champions rallied however, securing halved holes over the next three to secure the title with a 3 & 2 win.

AYRSHIRE SUMMER (SCRATCH) LEAGUES With Maybole and Abbotsford dropping out of the leagues, leaving 24 competing clubs, league 5 was not competed in 2015, with the remaining four leagues being reorganised to allow all leagues to include a full complement of six teams. Division 1 title holders Irvine Golf Club, retained the trophy in 2015, ahead of Prestwick St Cuthbert who put up a good challenge in their first season in the top league. Irvine Ravenspark finished bottom of the table, dropping out of the top league for the first time. Scratch (Summer) League trophies

THE DOC THOM ORDER OF MERIT The 2015 Ayrshire Order of Merit for the Doc Thom Salver included 17 local, national and international counting events. Trophy holder John Shanks (Irvine), with points from five of the 16 events played, held a slim lead in his defence of the title with just one event to play. In the closest finish to the chase for the Order Of Merit title for a number of years, any one of eight players could potentially have taken the title at the final event. With Shanks unavailable for the final event, he had a nervous wait to find out if any of his title rivals could gain sufficient points to overtake him, but in the event they were unable to do so, eventual runner up Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Cuthbert) coming closest to taking the title from Shanks.

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES DURING THE YEAR Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) had another outstanding season in 2015, keeping Ayrshire at the forefront of international golf. Notable individual performances during the year included reaching the last 16 of the Scottish Amateur Championship at Muirfield and the semi finals of The Amateur Championship at Carnoustie. McDonald was an integral part of the successful Ayrshire teams who won both the Scottish Area team Championship and West Of Scotland Inter County League in 2015, Jack McDonald and at an international level he again represented Scotland in both the Home Internationals and also in the European Mens Team Championship, played at Halmstad Golf Club in Sweden, where Scotland won the title with a 4 ½ - 1 ½ win over Denmark in the final. McDonald played a leading role in the event, being Scotland’s top scorer in the qualifying and gaining five points out of six in the Matchplay rounds. McDonald’s form throughout the year culminated in selection for the Great Britain & Ireland team who were successful in winning the Walker Cup against the USA at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in September, where McDonald again made a significant contribution, winning 2 ½ points from three in the match. Selection for the Walker Cup team was especially significant for McDonald as his grandfather, Gordon Cosh, had played in the match in Grodon Cosh & Jack McDonald 1965 in the USA. As a member of the winning team, McDonald became the third Kilmarnock (Barassie) member to taste victory in the event, following in the footsteps of Jim Milligan and Gordon Sherry, and in recognition of his outstanding record, 2015 ended fittingly with Jack McDonald being awarded Honorary membership of his home club. As well as being a member of Ayrshire’s successful county teams in 2015, Stuart Robin (Prestwick St Cuthbert) carried Ayrshire hopes of a win in the Scottish Amateur Championship at Muirfield all the way to the quarter finals before losing out by 3 & 2 to the eventual runner up, Daniel Young of Craigiehill Golf Club. Euan Walker (Kilmarnock Barassie) made his mark during his time at home from college in the USA during the summer, by winning the prestigious SGU Order Of Merit 72 hole Sutherland Chalice at Dumfries & County Golf Club, winning the event with a birdie at the first hole in a three way play off. Euan Walker

Stuart Robin

As well as being a member of the successful Ayrshire team that won the West Of Scotland Inter County league in October, Malcolm Pennycott (Whiting Bay) also won the trophy for the best amateur in the 54 hole Scottish Golfers Alliance Championship at Duff House Royal in Banff. In the field which featured both amateurs and professionals, Pennycott finished in sixth place overall. Malcolm Pennycott

AYRSHIRE LADIES GOLF The 2015 Ayrshire Ladies County Championship was contested over Western Gailes in April, with Catherine Malcolm of Prestwick St Cuthbert winning her third county championship title, a remarkable 23 years after her last championship win in 1992.

Catherine Malcolm

Wins over Katie McGarva (Troon Ladies) and Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) in the opening rounds saw Malcolm face leading qualifier Emma Hale (Troon Ladies) in the semi final, and a win on the final green set up a showdown with defending champion Linzi Allan (West Kilbride) in the final.

The final proved to be close throughout and a birdie three at the sixteenth put Malcolm one hole ahead with two to play. Malcolm missed an opportunity to win at the seventeenth, and a brave six foot putt at the final hole from Allan took the match into extra holes. At the 20th hole, after the first extra hole had been halved, Allan looked to be firm favourite after Malcolm took a penalty drop after a poor tee shot, but a superbly holed chip from off the back of the green for par gave Malcolm an unlikely half, and she took full advantage, recording a solid par to win the tie and the title at the third extra hole. The Ayrshire Ladies County team hosted the West Area Inter County matches at Loudoun in June, and completed three wins from three to win the title for only the third time in 20 years, following their previous wins in 2003 and 2011. The successful team who represented Ayrshire were :Jenny Linklater, Audrey Thompson, County Captain Sheila Adams, Liz Keohone, Linzi Allan, Debbie Watt, Connie Jaffrey Emma Hale & County Champion Catherine Malcolm. On the opening day the team faced Dumbarton & Argyll and a 2 – 1 lead following the morning foursomes set up an opening day victory by 6 ½ - 2 ½.

Ayrshire Ladies County Team

A 3 – 0 lead in the foursomes on day two set up a 6 ½ - 2 ½ win over Lanarkshire and the excellent foursomes form was carried on into day three, a 2 ½ - ½ morning lead setting up a 5 – 4 win over Renfrewshire to complete a hat trick of wins. There were also a number of notable individual performances during the year in womans and girls golf by county players.

AYRSHIRE LADIES GOLF cont’d Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) again represented Scotland in the European Womans Team Championship in Denmark as well as helping the Great Britain & Ireland team to the runners up spot in the Astor Trophy competition in Australia at the start of the year. In girls’ golf, Hazel McGarvie (Troon Ladies) had an Connie Jaffrey, Emma Hale & Hazel McGarvie outstanding year, representing Scotland at Under 18 level in

the home internationals at Lanark and in the European Girls team Championship in the Czech republic, as well as playing for Scotland schools against England. A good joint third finish in the Scottish Under 16 strokeplay early in the season was eclipsed during the British Girls Championship at West Kilbride where a superb nine under par opening round of 64 saw McGarvie ultimately win the Under 16 title and help Scotland to the team trophy during the event. Her performances during the year culminated in selection for the Great Britain & Ireland team who contested the Vagliano Trophy against Europe at Malone GC in Ireland. Like her clubmate Hazel McGarvie, Emma Hale (Troon Ladies) also represented Scotland at girls level in the Home Internationals at Lanark, the European Girls Team Championship in the Czech Republic and the Scotland schools side against England

In club golf, Kilmarnock (Barassie) won the West Of Scotland Inter Club Greenlees trophy for the first time in their history in 2015.
