// Initially sketched designs were to merge the triangular pattern with curved contouring lines. This however did not provide a satisfactory outcome when translated to toile. Similarly, through experimenting with quilting lead to working with only triangular shapes as it provided a less complicated and more visually appealing contrast on the upper body.

// 3D experimentation with quilting led to the final conclusions on the design outcome for the jacket. This evolved from the initial concept to incorporate triangles and organic lines – merging into one another. However when translated to the final toile represented an unsatisfactory look visually. The eventual outcome was to simplify the design to have complex quilting on only the left sleeve. With contrasts coming from fabric texture and slight colour differences.

// Integrating the reflective piping into the design was problem solving exercise. Initial designs incorporated piping all triangles in the left sleeve. However, after numerous experimental samples this deemed unsatisfactory as the fabric and piping together became distorted and deviated from the stealth aesthetics of the jacket.

// Pocket design and construction for the hardshell waterproof jacket was a complicated problem to successfully solve. For this reason numerous paper prototypes were created initially to work out the correct order of assembly, as well as the various layers which were to be sewn in order to create and develop these key details.

// The left-hand pocket was considerably more complicated than the right -hand one to design as its layered make-up (of two pockets) one which was a hidden side entry pocket and one cargo pocket top entry snap closure pocket. Thus the most difficult part of its fabrication was making sure that the cargo pocket, successfully concealed the side entry pocket behind it.

// Both pockets were designed to expand when filled and lay flat when not in use. For this to succeed, the seam allowance needed to be small (0.5cm) and a number of experimental samples were made in order to create the desired look for the final piece.

// The bellows for the pocket required intricate machining to make sure they would remain flat when not in use, this was done by edge-stitching to hold/ press the opposing seams flat.

// Fabric scraps were used to test the construction methods and special attention was taken to accurately insert reflective piping which was a particularly difficult procedure and required a number of tries to get it to look sharp. Using seam tape was important in making the final garment fully waterproof. I opted to cutting down the seam tape from 22mm width to 11mm so as to make the seams more pliable as well as leaving a neater luxury finish to the internals of the garment.

// Snaps always represent a challenge to place. As positioning them means permanently making holes in painstaking work, which can leave the final piece ruined! All snaps holes were chalked on then carefully checked for alignment several times before permanently committing. It was therefore important to test the result of placement on scraps to make sure the waterproof fabric was not distorted.

// In order to produce a refined luxury aesthetic with this piece, it was imperative that all details on this simple garment were executed precisely, and for this matter it was key to make sure that the small details were flawless. A number of samples were made in order to achieve this. This began with the piping of the back and front centre seams on the trousers, which was very slowly process as this needed to remain uniform for all pieces. This was the most difficult part of fabrication, and something that I finally mastered with this garment! Pocket openings were also tested as all of them were to be positioned on seams whether it be the side seams on the rear left yoke (see right-hand image).

// The block was shaped to be roomier from the seat to knee after which it tapered to a close fit at the ankle. This was done partly for style and partly for function, as it allowed more movement from the upper limbs whilst cycling whilst minimising excess fabric on the lower leg that might get caught in a bike chain. Natural stretch - The fabric was cut on the bias to allow natural stretch, so as to not constrain the movement of the athlete. Spiral leg seams and asymmetrical cutting - technically this was the most exciting piece to construct as whilst relatively simple the side seams were removed and joined so that each leg was just a spiralled piece of continuous fabric. This gave the trousers a unique drape and a futuristic contemporary look. It was important however to notch the pieces carefully to prevent misalignment of the seams when fabricating the complete garment.

// Using a French seam on this special weatherpoof cotton created a more water-repellent seal as when wet the fibres of the fabric swell and slow the ingress of moisture to the inner surface. This seam which was recommended by the manufacturer also provided a durable and clean finish to the piece.
