Rotary Club of Shrewsbury GUEST SPEAKER – Dr Tim Jenkins

Dr Tim Jenkins with President John Siviter

At the Rotary Club of Shrewsbury luncheon on 25 May 2016 Dr. Tim Jenkins spoke to us about the University of Shrewsbury. He outlined the landscape of learning in Shropshire, mentioning the young talent brain drain and the high density of public sector employment. He said that we must look forward, embracing digital technology and making young people aware of the quality of life to be had in the county, which could be done by encouraging immigration, as Shropshire had good travel links with Central Wales, The West Midlands and Cheshire. The curriculum had, among others, History BA [hons] as he thought that Shropshire is rich in opportunities to study, having many old buildings, hill forts and castles. Tim was an interesting and very confident speaker, who finished by mentioning how the situation would now be very different if Baxter, who advocated a Shrewsbury University many centuries ago, had had his way!
