Community ritual design is the practice of real time health change: the conscious mind to the beating heart of the living neighborhood.

28

27

As community ritual is designed and practiced in time, formal spatial elements also change. Trees grow or die, flowers break through concrete or are freshly paved over. Products are produced and consumed. People are born, live, love, and die. Nothing happens in isolation, but rather in an interconnected process of change. These formal elements are indices of the rhythms of urban life, each a kind of urban heart rate. They are bits and pieces, evidences, data presents.

In this volume I present a vision of holistic neighborhood change by imagining incremental changes Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York. Since the 1880s, Brownsville has been home to social entrepreneurship. Health and well being in Brownsville requires people to work and live together in the face of austerity - it relies upon their ability to make community ritual.

19

crack epidemic

“According to the Office of Vital Statistics in NYC in 2011 and 2012, Brownsville as compared to the rest of NYC had the highest death rates from all causes, the highest cancer rates, the highest rates of heart disease and the highest rates of pre-pregnancy obesity from 20072009.” -Dr. Maybank 2014 Bkreader

Design, as it is practiced in the design of community ritual, is holistic and conscious change of formal elements in space and time.

To represent the range of activities over time I present a timeline as a score. The score is a graph of activities in which actions take place at different frequencies, different cyclical speeds. Lower frequency events are programs which happen every year for many years. They may take a whole year or semester to go through one cycle. Higher frequency events such as community group meetings, group meals, and lot maintenance regimes may go through a whole cycle of operation in a few weeks or months. The timeline helps to understand these rhythms clearly, and plan future rituals based on rhythmic convergences and harmonies.

Although the cycle of a community ritual may happen at a low frequency, and unfold over the course of a year, or at a high frequency, happening in the span of a few days, the cycle itself has distinct stages of development. These stages are interconnected at different scales. For example, making an elaborate dinner with friends might be concieved and carried out in a single weekend. However, this gathering might be part of a larger cycle in which the friends were brought together because of the culmination of a much larger project over the course of a year. Each frequency, or each program on the score represents a full community ritual cycle. On the opposite page is a model of a cyce of community transformation. This model has been broken up in six stages based on research on community cycles around the country. The stages are: outlooking - eyes and ears open in a new approach to even a familiar place. This is often a personal journey out and in. design - envisioning how things might look differently. planning - bringing ideas together with other individuals and with groups to identify a realistic plan of action. action - everyone has something to offer in a process of building something or doing something together. celebration - sharing the bounty of the work with all. resourcing - taking stock of everyones thoughts and actions. What changed? Each of the four chapters that follow represent one larger cycle of community ritual design in Brownsville, and each page represents a smaller cycle or series of cycles within that larger cycle.

With increased use of the public space, youth groups congregate at night in the area at night and homeless gather during the day. Both draw police presence.
