RICHARD WOODS D.I.Y.

Editions 2011-2013

Alan Cristea Gallery

Remnants and Offcuts

Richard Woods’ print projects are the result of collaboration between the artist and Alan Cristea Gallery.

Remnants and Offcuts were made to coincide with Richard Woods’ solo exhibition D.I.Y. at the gallery (29 April – 1 June 2013), a site-specific installation of one of Woods’s Logo works, made up of planks of wood which are individually handprinted in his studio in south London. The subtitles of the works – around the fireplace, behind the sofa etc – refer to the idea that these might be segments of a larger floor work, although the actual shapes of the prints and their titles have been selected at random. Remnants consist of brightly coloured planks printed on plain white paper; Offcuts are black and white floorboards on six different buff-coloured paper backgrounds. The blocks of the editioned woodcuts are made by Richard Woods’ studio and the print process at Thumbprint Editions tries to mirror the imperfect, handmade quality of Woods’s larger installations. The first set of prints from 2011, Woodblock Inlays, take their title and inspiration from the series of paintings that Woods makes with his ‘leftovers’. Woods draws our attention to what is there, and what is not there, and to what can be used again; a study of representation, removal, repetition and recycling.
