REIMS CATHEDRAL A stay in Champagne is most definitely not complete without a visit to Reims Cathedral. A real masterpiece of 13th-century Gothic art and the site of the coronations of the Kings of France, the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Reims is without a doubt the most illustrious of the city’s churches. Known for its statuary, in particular the famous «Smiling Angel», it also houses an impressive collection of stained-glass windows, including designs by Marc Chagall and, more recently, Imi Knoebel. A site steeped in French history that is sure to leave a lasting impression. www.reims-tourisme.com
POMMERY CHAMPAGNE AND VILLA DEMOISELLE Few fail to go into raptures over the Pommery champagne estate. The combination of its history and architecture mean that a visit to the estate is like stepping into a fairytale. With its 18 km of majestic cellars and fine chalk vaults storing over 20 million bottles, the site is quite unique. Another architectural gem of this famous champagne house is Villa Demoiselle, on the other side of Boulevard Henry Vasnier. After five years’ renovation work, the Villa has been restored to its former glory and is once again open to the public, to whom it proudly reveals its unique collection of 20th-century vintages. www. champagnepommery.com
THE VILLAGE OF HAUTVILLERS It is not without good reason that the village of Hautvillers has been made a listed historic monument, as the «Birthplace of Champagne». Surrounded by vineyards and forests, Hautvillers owes its fame to the winemaking monk Dom Pérignon, inventor of champagne. With its lofty houses, façades adorned with wrought-iron signs, its narrow, winding streets, its church and abbey, not to mention its inestimable past, Hautvillers will be sure to enchant you! www.hautvillers.fr
PALACE OF TAU This former residence of the archbishops of Reims was where the king and his retinue were lodged during the coronations and where the banquet that rounded off the ceremony was held. Now converted into a museum, the Palace of Tau houses the cathedral treasure, including the Coronation Chalice and Charlemagne’s Talisman. Proceeding through the rooms, one also discovers a fine collection of precious stones, impressive tapestries and many other works of art evoking Reims’s history. MERCIER CHAMPAGNE Discover the amazing history of the Mercier champagne house and cellars! Founded in 1858 by Eugène Mercier, it is one of the oldest champagne houses in France. The cellars, set on a single level, are the setting for a quite unique tour. BOAT TRIP How about an alternative tour of Châlonsen-Champagne? On board a small boat, wend your way slowly along the Mau and the Nau, the two rivers that cross the town, and discover some of its finest gems. Every evening from June to September and every Saturday in December, step aboard and let yourself drift away with Métamoph’eau’ses, a unique journey on the water taking in the stunning nature and sublime architectural heritage of “Sparkling Venice”. Discover the beauty of the town and its treasures by night with sound and light! www.chalons-tourisme.com
VERZENAY BEACON Standing in a sea of vines, the Phare de Verzenay beacon and its Vine Museum are two of Champagne’s absolute musts! Not content with offering fabulous panoramic views over the winegrowing slopes of Montagne de Reims, the beacon and museum invite visitors to explore the exciting world of champagne-growing, presenting the different grape varieties and appellation areas, as well as the vine’s growth cycle. www.lepharedeverzenay.com
FOSSIER BISCUITS LAC DU DER The sea in Champagne! The Lac du Der is the biggest manmade lake in Europe and is an ideal place for all those who wish to combine sport with nature in an extraordinary setting. Timber-frame architecture is particularly present there, both on the façades of houses or museums and inside the religious buildings. The Lac du Der is also an internationally renowned ornithological site: 300 species of birds including the common crane occupy the lake and are observed by amateurs and enthusiasts both in the summer and the winter. www.lacduder.com
The famous Maison Fossier invites you on a tour of its biscuit factory! Discover another side of Reims through the history of these biscuits, which have been titillating French taste buds since 1756.
