LAKE TAHOE CABIN

DESI GN // PORT FOL IO

A RUSTIC CABIN WITH A MODERN TWIST, THIS 12,500+ SQ. FT. BLACK A-FRAME CONTRASTS BEAUTIFULLY WITH THE SURROUNDING NATURE. THIS CABIN IS THE PERFECT GETAWAY FOR MANY TO ENJOY. WHILE IT IS INTENDED FOR A LARGE FAMILY’S RETREAT, THIS HOME STILL FEELS COZY ENOUGH FOR TWO.

// R E S I D E N T I A L

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach and not, when it came to die, discover that I had not lived.”

exterior night RENDERING This cabin was designed with the intent to have a rustic feel with a modern twist. Within the architecture, the classic a-frame structure makes the space feel rustic, and the large scale modernizes it. Also, taking two a-frames and crossing them helps with the intent of a modern take on the classic shape. The exterior materials are black metal roofing and black metal siding, making it feel modern, while the stone brings in the rustic design.

The interior materials of the structure are a beautiful warm wood, with the beams being stained black, bringing the black, modern exterior inside. The contemporary glass railings add to the desired design intent.

DESI GN // PORT FOL IO

Classic pieces were used within the space such as the Papa Bear Chair and the Wishbone Chair. These pieces were chosen because they are a good mix of both the classic/rustic feel while also being modern pieces many people know and love.

kitchen RENDERING In the kitchen, modern appliances are used with mixed cabinets and counters, which tie together the ideas of rustic and modern. Throughout the home, the concrete floors make it feel very modern with rugs placed to warm up the space. Greenery is used throughout the spaces to add to the natural feel.

// R E S I D E N T I A L

DESI GN // PORT FOL IO

Furnishings were chosen with a mix of both rustic and modern. Many pieces of the furniture chosen are modern, with a few select pieces such as the Bernhardt Harper rocking chairs and the hide rugs, tying in the rustic nature of the cabin. Lamps were chosen with antler bases, and fur throws are placed throughout to bring more rustic objects in the space. Modern chandeliers and pendants are hung to counterbalance the large, rustic look. Rustic wood side tables, dining tables, and nightstands are used, while sofas, the entry table, and beds have a fresh modern take.

Design Intent

DESI GN // PORT FOL IO

The basic needs center is designed to help homeless individuals alleviate some of their struggles and help them achieve selfactualization. Research has provided insight into safety, privacy, crowding, dignity, and diversity that allows us to make conclusions about the layout, color, furniture, art, privacy, lighting, storage, visual buffers, materials, and acoustics for this basic needs center. Durable, non-permeable, comfortable, and easy to maintain materials and furniture are essential for a space where many people are coming and going. It is our goal to make these individuals feel seen, heard, and important.

waiting area RENDERING

Homelessness affects more than 550,000 individuals in the United States of America and is increasing at an alarming rate (State of Homelessness, 2018). Often, the factors that lead to homelessness are out of an individual’s control and brought on by many factors, including high housing costs, and loss of income. The purpose of the design of this basic needs center for the homeless is to help ease their struggles by focusing on safety and protection, crowding and privacy, dignity, and diversity. Safety & Protection The moment an individual enters the basic needs center their psychological safety is addressed. The entrance and reception need to be non-confrontational and inviting while providing “visual assurance” that the space is safe (Leininger, 2013). The reception and waiting area are the first spaces that the individual will enter. A reception desk primarily oriented to the side will provide security without being confrontational. Open doorways can provide clear views to a space. Space planning can help an individual feel comfortable with corner to corner seating instead of face to face as this arrangement “may be perceived as confrontational” (Berens, 2015). Banquet seating and sofas with individual tables provide flexibility and the opportunity to socialize. Design solutions such as walls and roofs that are clearly supported also provide psychological safety (Pable, 2007). To further provide physical and psychological safety it’s important to avoid the appearance of crowding and provide privacy.

Kathy Baker, Office Manager (Previous), True North Treatment Center Ryan J Bean, MPAS, PA, PT, Adjunct Instructor, Idaho State University Ken Carillo + Lorin Mortensen, Mechanical Engineer, USU Facilities Craig Humphries, Fire Marshall, Logan City This project is in collaboration with an office manager of an opioid treatment center, a physician’s assistant (PA), mechanical engineers, and the Logan City Fire Marshall. The office manager shared her experiences working in a treatment center and what was important to have there. She was able to look over and check off the floor plan and the workflow of the space. The PA taught about drug addiction and the importance of these opioid treatment centers. The mechanical engineers were able to teach about ventilation rates and how to calculate the CPM. The Fire Marshall checked off the exit & fire safety plan. All members were important for the completion of this project, and collaborating with them was very valuable.

PASSIVE & ACTIVE ENERGY

TOTAL AIR FLOW

0 CFM

2 CFM

This space uses both passive and active energy. Passive energy is utilized in order to have less reliance and use of the active energy, which is the mechanical heating and cooling. Passive energy can provide space heating, natural ventilation, and daylighting. According to the US Department of Energy, it is estimated that 30% to 50% of energy costs can be reduced using passive energy and energy conservation. This space will utilize passive energy through thermal mass, glazing, shading, natural ventilation, and insulation. The glazing on the windows throughout the space will allow the necessary heat gain, cooling load avoidance, and daylighting needs depending on the size and location of windows. Appropriate shading will be provided through the use of building overhangs, landscape vegetation, and window coverings. Natural ventilation will be used to rid the building of heat when it is too warm inside, and to cool the building when the air outside is cooler than inside. Insulation will be above the required amount determined by code in order to reduce the cost of heating and cooling costs. Continuous insulation will be used in order to reduce cold spots in the space. Utilizing both passive and active energy within the space optimizes the ventilation.

Interior material selections are to be selected with low VOC's to improve indoor air quality. All paints, carpets, fabrics, and other materials used within the space will have low VOC's. To ensure this, many interior materials chosen are GreenGuard Certified. All labels of interior materials are checked to ensure they are of low VOC's. Walk-off mats will be used at all entrances and exits to help the building stay clean and improve the indoor air quality.
