And [O Muhammad] recite to them the story of the two sons of Adam [habil and qabil [Cain and Abel] in truth; when each offered a Qurban [sacrifice,] It was accepted from the one but not from the other. The latter said to the former, “I will surely kill you.” The former said: “Verily Allah accepts only from those who are pious.” Qurban in Islamic term means:The sacrifice of a predetermined animal at a certain period with the intention of getting closer to Allah [SWT]. The animals to be sacrificed are goats, sheep, cows and camels. The animals are sacrificed on the day of Eidul Adha [10th Dhul Hijjah] and also on the 3 days of tashriq which falls on 11, 12 and 13th of Dhul Hijjah [12th month of the Islamic calendar.] The practice of Qurban was made an injunction in the 2nd year after Hijrah.

To relive the Sacrifice that Allah [SWT] had Commanded Prophet Ibrahim [AS] to sacrifice His beloved son Ismail. The sacrifice was later changed to a goat when Prophet Ibrahim [AS] and Ismail [AS] succeeded in conforming to the Commandments of Allah [SWT]. Performing charitable work by contributing and distributing the meat to the poor and destitute. Such acts would bring cheer to them and spread happiness especially during the Festival of Eidul Adha.— Compiled by Niaz M A Ali

The Publications Bureau was an idea mooted immediately after the Annual General Meeting in November 2007. A Team was soon formed and 0n January 28, 2008, the first issue of ‘Al-Hikmah‘ was released. With Allah’s [SWT] Grace, Permission and Guidance, since then to date we have released a total of 12 bulletins every 2 months filled with a selection of items and news to cater to every taste. Al-Alhamdulillah, the trust and confidence which the Exco laid upon our shoulders for publication of the bulletin, has been met with satisfaction and approval of our members and by non-members alike. It must be stressed that the production and distribution of our bulletin is not a solo effort. The Publications Bureau meet every month to plan the next issue. Ideas are discussed, accepted and rejected and altogether every meeting which is hosted in turn by each member of the Team, complete with a sumptuous lunch is fairly a ‘fun’ time. We joke with each other and in the process have forged very cordial ties. In fact we look forward to each meeting just so to get together. We are like a close knit family and very proud of our achievements so far. But definitely not so as to rest on our laurels and take things easy. We strive to make every other publication better than the previous one. ‘Al-Hikmah’ is produced for your perusal. Like in every organization, the bulletin plays a major role in imparting valuable information, knowledge to one and all. Therefore it is pertinent that you as a recipient of the bulletin must in turn inform us regarding what you want to be included in your very own newsletter. Write to us with your ideas, suggestions, recommendations and even submit articles which you think may be beneficial to our members. You may write in Malay or in English and be assured that each letter will receive our complete attention at the next meeting to discuss its content and feasibility of inclusion in the next bulletin. Each and every correspondence will be acknowledged. Please forward your letters, articles to, The Managing Editor, Blk 688B Choa Chu Kang Drive, #15-336. Singapore 682688. Alternatively you may email to rabkaila1@hotmail.com. Niaz M A Ali, Managing Editor, For and Behalf of the entire Publications Bureau

1.56 Billion Umat Islam

T

Judaism, Christianity and Islam

Similarities and Differences

INTRODUCTION F. E. Peters is a Professor of Middle Eastern Studies, History & Religion at New York University. He is a scholar without peer in the comparative study of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, revisits his pioneering work 25 years ago. Peters has rethought and thoroughly revised his classic, “The Children Of Abraham,” for a new generation of readers at a time when the understanding of these three Religious Traditions has taken on a new and critical urgency. Peters traces the three Faiths from the 6th century B.C. when the Jews returned to Palestine from exile in Babylonia, to the time in the Middle Ages when they approached their present form. He points out that the three Faith Group, which the Muslims themselves refer to as, “The People Of The Book,” share much common ground. Most notably, each embraces a God who intervenes in history on behalf of HIS people. The Book’s text is direct and accessible with thorough and nuanced discussions of each of the religions. Updates and footnotes provide the reader with expert guidance into the highly complex issues that lie between every line of this timely new edition of “The Children Of Abraham.” Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Similarities and Differences. Similarities.

There are a few common roots and many common elements to that Judaism, Christianity and Islam – so called Abrahamic religious heritage. Here are a few major ones that these 3 Faiths share. Belief about God Judaism, Christianity and Islam are monotheistic religions, namely they believe in that there is only one God. The affirmation of the oneness of God by Christians is sometimes misunderstood , because Christians believe that the one God is triune [The Holy Trinity] . However this is not a denial of monotheism but an affirmation of the complexity of the Divine Being. All three Faiths believe that this God is the origin and source of all that exists. God cares about the entire creation and desires the well-being of all. God is just and has provided basic rules for our guidance so that we may be good an righteous, according to God’s intention. God is also merciful; by means of God’s Grace we are given strength to be more like what we ought to be.

The Pink and the Blue

Citizens and PRs

Page 5

The Government is reviewing the distinctions between citizens and permanent residents. Is it because the difference between the two is indistinctive or a move to fine tune in favour of citizens? As a Singapore Citizen, you have the right to vote, visit 150 countries with your red passport without additional visa, receive many tax reliefs including heavy educational, housing and medical subsidies. If so wish, as a citizen, you may form a political party, speak openly at the Speaker’s corner to air your criticisms and or grouses on any topic without reference or inference to race and religion.

It is an undeniable fact that as a recipient of the pink identity card you have an advantageous position over Permanents residents [PRs] and foreign workers living here. Should a citizen become a destitute and unable to support himself/herself, they qualify for public assistance, a rental flat and handouts to help settle utility bills. There is also the Medifund to help pay your medical bills, if hospitalized. All the abovementioned are not available to PRs, thus the distinction between a citizen and a PR cannot be clearer. The National Population Secretariat [NPS] under the Prime Minister’s Office has explicitly stated, “Our citizens’ interests are the priority of the Government.” It points out that a PR holds an entry permit that grants him/her the right to enter and reside in Singapore. “Citizenship is a birthright of legitimate children of Singapore citizen parents. As such, citizens enjoy more rights and benefits than PRs” said the NPS In spite of all these perks and privileges, many Singaporeans still complain about being marginalized by the influx of new arrivals and becoming strangers in their own land. To allay these concerns, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong told 1,500 students at a Nanyang Technological University forum last month that there will be a “sharper differentiation in the way citizens and PRs are treated, to reflect the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.” Elaborating soon after, Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan said: “We are looking at this whole issue of calibrating the differences, so Singaporeans can see positively and without doubt what it means to come first. Foreigners in our midst will still feel a sense of welcome, but they must understand that they cannot demand the same privileges as a citizen, this is something that we have to fine tune with time.” So what is contributing to the rising discontentment and anxiety among Singaporeans? Why the need to review the distinctions between citizens and permanent residents for the 2nd time since 2006? What more can be done to reassure citizens that they still lie in the Singapore sun? According to observers, it all has to do with numbers. One indisputable factor that causes many Singaporeans to feel that the privileges of citizenship have diminished is the significant rise in the proportion of PRs to citizens. In 1990, there was one PR for every 23 citizens but just 10 years later, in 2000 this number narrowed to one PR to every 6 citizens. Statistics released last month indicate Singapore’s population nearing the five million mark with citizens numbering 3.2 million or 64% of the total. As of June 2009, the number of PRs rose by 11% to reach a record high of 533,000. Other foreigners numbered 1.25 million. Much of the inflow is driven by economic necessity. Demographer, Mr. Saw Swee Hock in his book ‘Population of Singapore’ concludes that if no new citizens are admitted and fertility rates remain constantly low, a resident population of 3.6 million in 2010 will begin to decline from 2020. Subsequently it will fall to 3.52 million in 2030 and to 2.86 million in 2050.

He has identified 3 other factors that have contributed to the citizen’s unease about new arrivals. 1: the intense competition for resources and opportunities – especially in housing, education and the employment market – from this large inflow of newcomers. Although this is not peculiar to Singapore, it has been accelerated by the recent economic downturn. 2: Male citizens must complete two years of compulsory Nation Service followed by ten years of annual reservist obligations, while their PR counterparts have no such obligations. 3: the lack of effective integration among some PRs has led to the stereotypical view that such residents are, “fair-weather friends” who have little intention to contribute to or interact with the community. Nominated MP and Sociologist, Paulin Straughan is of the opinion That Singapore’s dense demographic space makes it inevitable that with the rising number of non-citizens, citizens end up interacting much more with them. Although the Prime Minister spoke of having more distinctions between citizens and PRs, he said, that the Government cannot make it so difficult for PRs and non-residents that they do not want to come. Despite this stark reality, Dr, Leong Chan Hoong a research fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies [IPS] the large number of new PRs including the drive to attract foreign talent, “has given rise to the impression that the Government is handing out permanent residency too easily.’

Laporan Biro Muslimat Utk Muktamar Dwi-Tahunan 2009 Ahli-ahli Biro Muslimat Persatuan Islam Al-Hikmah: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Fauziah Khamis (Ketua Biro) Rafiah Md Yusof Rafiah Ahmad Sutinah Tukiran Maria Ali Nurul Jannah

Surah Al Maidah Ayat 3

SELECTED SAYINGS FROM THE HOLY PROPHET (PBUH)

THOSE WHOSE TIME IS APPOINTED

15:36-38: “Then you are of those who are given respite, until the day whose time is appointed” (Iblis) said: ‘My Lord! Give me respite until the day when they are raised.’ (God) said: “Then you are of those who are given respite, until the day whose time is appointed” (15:36-38).

Envy Keep yourselves far from envy, because it eats up and takes away good actions, like the fire that eats up and burns wood. Supression of Anger Whoever suppresses his anger, when he has in his power to show it, God will give him a great reward.

Abu Ja’far Mohammad ibn Jarir at-Tabari narrated through his sanad from Wahhab ibn Jami’ who

He is not strong and powerful, who throws people down, but he is strong who withholds himself from anger.

said: I asked Imam as-Sadeq about Iblis and “the day whose time is appointed”

Behavior

Imam said, “Oh Wahhab! Do you think this refers to the Day of Judgement when God resurrects the people?! It does not! God gave Iblis respite until the day of the rising of the Qaem

Much silence and a good disposition; there are no two works better than these.

, who will hold his (Iblis’) forehead and behead him. This is the meaning of ‘the day whose time is appointed.”

Deal gently with a people, and be not harsh; cheer them and condemn not.

The best of friends is he who is best in behavior and character. One who does not practice modesity and does not refrain from shameless deeds is not a Muslim.

Eid al-Mubahila

The 24th of Dhul-Hijja marks the anniversary of the day when Muhammad invited the Christians of Najran to imprecation each other in the year A.H. The term mubahila in Arabic refers to the prayer of the faithful in order to rid themselves of the company of liars. The event was the result delegation led by Abdul Masihm and 60 Christian followers addressing Muhammad regarding the nature of Jesus. Then, according to Qur'an Mu hammad invited them to imprecation: "If any one disputes in this matter with thee, now after (full) knowledge Hath come to thee, say: "Come! let us gather together,- our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves: Then let us earnestly pray, and invoke the curse of Allah on those who lie! 3:61"

Though the verse calls for (in 'Arabic) at least 3 "sons", at least 3 "women", and at 3 least "selves" from each side in the Mubahila, only Imam Hasan ibn 'Ali and Imam Husain ibn 'Ali represented the "sons" of the Prophet, only Fatima al-Zahra represented the "women", and only 'Ali ibn Abi Talib represented as the "self" or "soul" of the Prophet.

Much progress can be seen in the Youth Bureau’s efforts to make a comeback after years of ‘drought’ activities. The hiatus is over. With the successful events such as the Bowling Tournament, Youth 3R Day Camp and the Sisters’ Day Out, we are left anticipating of what is happening next. Of course, for it all to happen, the crucial planning, organizing and executing of manpower and logistics can only come from a great leader. Bro Ridha along with his team, spearheaded the efforts to make the dreams of the Youth of Al-Hikmah a reality. Last month, they embarked on a Hari Raya Visits to 13 homes all in a day! The bus accommodates the 30 enthusiasts and they travelled to all parts of Singapore. And no, it is not just an ordinary ‘eat, drink, duit raya’ thingy. For every house they visited, a ziarat of Imam Husayn (as) was recited and some notes of nasheed were sung as well. The atmosphere created was truly profound, thought-provoking and even moved the hosts. I was there and I know this is the best that I have witnessed, if not, better. This is just the beginning. In time, with consistent efforts and continued support from parents, the youth and Al-Hikmah as a whole, we will see them bursting with knowledge and leadership ready to take on for the next generation. Enjoy the photos!
