SHOP LOCAL IN BATHGATE

SCOTLAND’S FIRST BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT

1

Many people get out of the habit of shopping locally & are then surprised by the range of products and gifts available.

Shopping locally will surprise you.

10 reasons to 2

Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us all that sole traders = expensive, but the evidence just isn’t there to back this up . If you add in travel, parking costs, fees to transport larger items home and your time, the overall cost is often much higher.

Shopping locally saves you money.

4

Many town centres in Britain look the same with franchises and multinationals. Independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Independent shops keep traditional local products alive. They respond more quickly to the needs of local customers, stocking products to meet the changing population needs. They can also be more innovative…….organic products were first developed by independent traders.

Shopping locally retains our distinctiveness – no clone towns allowed!

7

Sole traders and independent stores are proportionally more generous in their support for local charities, carnivals, schools and community events. So supporting local shops means a financial return for our community.

3

5

We are all aware of CO2 emissions and our environmental impact. Local shops, which often stock a high percentage of local sourced goods, products and do not require long car & bus journeys to get to, help reduce our global footprint.

Shopping locally saves the environment.

8

Local independent shops invest more in our communities.

Most people can get to their local shops easily and this is especially important for elderly, vulnerable and young people and those without transport. Keeping your shops open by buying locally helps the whole community.

Local shops are for everyone.

2

Shopping locally retains our communities.

6

Shops in our town centres and villages create local employment and self-employment. These people in turn spend in the local economy. Over half a million people are employed in retail in our rural towns and villages. Evidence shows that every £1 spent with a local supplier is worth £1.76 to the local economy. The same £1 spent outside the area will only generate 36p for the local economy.

Shopping locally creates jobs.

9

Evidence from numerous surveys shows people receive better customer care and service in local shops. Traders survive by their reputation and repeat business - so shopping local means that you get a higher standard of service.

Local shops value you more.

So… shop local in Bathgate

BATHGATE means business

People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns and villages but don’t equate this to how they spend their money. Shops will only survive if customers spend locally – so if you want a vibrant town centre, where people can socialise as well as shop, shop locally.

10

Private, voluntary and public sector services cluster around shops. The loss of the high street often corresponds to a reduction in these services. As shops disappear, so do hairdressers, vets, dentists etc.

Shopping locally saves services.

We all need a little treat once in a while. We’re so busy all of the time, it’s nice to enjoy some retail therapy. So whether you’re heading up the street, into town or just sitting in front of the computer, indulge in some juicy little beauty products like these... Elaine Hunter – editor of www.yummymummybeauty.com and beauty journalist – gives you the best moisturisers and creams out there as we head into winter. And some tips on how to look yummy at the school gates…

Eternal Aloe Super £30 Hydrating Moisturiser

Every now and then, there comes a cream that takes your breath away. On only day three of using this, I had notched up about seven comments of ‘your skin looks amazing’ or ‘what new make-up are you using?’ It’s jampacked with Aloe Vera, which has great healing properties, but this cream makes your skin glow. It tingles a bit at first – perhaps the Aloe Vera, but it does seem to be a wonder cream and not one with a big price tag. From www.eternalskincare.com

Móa, the green balm

£9.99

For all the green mums out there, you’ll love this. It’s probably more about soothing and calming than beautifying as it has healing properties but you can use it as a facial cleanser too. The natural healing balm uses 100 per cent organic herbs - and the Móa balm claims to calm, nourish, renew and protect - it’s so nice for little bums too. Móa does soothe things like itchy skin conditions and is meant to be good for bumps, bites, grazes and minor burns. It even works wonders after shaving (so something for dads or your legs?) I think this is more of a baby product. Perhaps good for first aid and definitely for the baby’s bag. It’s well priced too. www.thegreenbalm.com

Liz Earle’s Superskin Moisturiser

£34.50

When your skin is well-nourished and hydrated, you tend to look a lot better. This one from Liz Earle is lovely. It suits 30-something to 40-something skin and sinks in like butter melting on toast. I’m beginning to become a bit of a Liz Earle fan. See Expert’s Tips for more on Liz Earle and the product range. From www.lizearle.com or major department stores.

School run quick fix Here’s a couple of products that will help you look a bit more alive in the mornings – whether you’re doing the school run or have an early morning breakfast meeting.

Laura Geller Air Whipped Blush

£20.50

No 7 Lash Adapt

£12.50

Nothing makes you look more tired than a pale white face. But it’s almost impossible to get your ‘face’ on as you’re trying to get them ready to school. A quick dab with this amazing Laura Geller Air Whipped blush is a must to make you look healthier. It’s creamy, as light as a feather and goes on really easily. Less is more here. www.qvcuk.com

A quick lick of mascara will help finish the look. This one’s very easy to apply and certainly gives you a colour on your lashes without them looking like you’ve lathered on layers. This one’s a nice one for a quick coat in the morning. People will start noticing your healthier look. From Boots.

For more products, competitions, give-aways and beauty news log onto to www.yummymummybeauty.com – the mother of all beauty guides. Yummymummybeauty – is the new on-line beauty webmag with mums in mind. But you don’t have to be one to enjoy it.

Real world health, fitness and wellbeing

Be different this year

beat the festive bulge Christmas 2011, you’ve received your Santa Pass and it states:

101 2012

This pass hereby entitles the owner to completely abandon themselves into holiday mode via eating and drinking absolutely anything and everything they can get their hands on while simultaneously parking their backsides on any available sofa for the duration of the festive season.

What if during the Festive Season 2011 instead of piling on the pounds we make it our absolute priority to simply maintain our present weight, that way we can still enjoy ourselves and start 2012 still being able to fasten our jeans?

The simple truth is that Santa’s Pass makes us fat – we eat more and exercise less. Flip those two facts around and the answer to beating the festive flab is to eat less and exercise more.

I know it sounds simple written down but how do you put this into practise while still holding onto your Santa Pass? It’s simply a question of balance. Here’s how ....

My top two pain free strategies to help beat the x-mas bulge

A simple way to eat less is to fill up first on less calorie dense X-Mas fayre such as soup, turkey, vegetables and dare I say it salad. Eat slowly and consciously, chew your food! When you know you’ve had enough, simply stop eating. This way you will be able to have a taste of everything on your plate, you won’t feel deprived, bloated and uncomfortable due to eating more than your body needs. Practise this simple but effective ‘eat less’ strategy and you’re on your way to a slimmer 2012.

To exercise more simply go out for a 20-30 minute walk 5 times per week. Around the middle of your walk add in a 5 minute interval section where you walk as fast as possible for 20 seconds then slow it down for 10 seconds, just count. Plan a circular route from your front door, wrap up warm and off you go. Make sure your route is safe (no iPods) and take in as many hills as possible for further intensity. This strategy only requires consistency to work is a great stress buster and you’ll also feel energised and happier.

A Christmas Morning Long Ago…..! A Poem by Alex Hastings, Armadale

“Do you think he’s been yet?” my sister asked, early one Christmas morning. The clock on my table had just turned half-past four. “If you’re up too early, he might not come!”, had been my mothers’ warning as we headed off to bed the night before. “Let’s go and see!” she whispered, as we climbed out of our beds. Terrified we’d make the floorboards squeak… Off we went on tip-toe, thoughts racing through our heads hoping that the lounge door wouldn’t creak……! My sister edged it open, and had a peak inside, was he there or had he been and gone? The outline of our presents, could be seen inside the room ‘Cos someone’d left the Christmas tree lights on… “Santa’s been!!, my sister squealed, excitement in her voice “He’s left our presents spread out on the floor!” Where to start when opening, we were really spoiled for choice! Santa couldn’t have left us any more……! He’d drank the milk we’d left for him, and eaten his two mince pies And the carrot left for Rudolph was away…… Now Rudolph led the other reindeer and was flying through the skies As Santa put his sack back in his sleigh…….. “Ho!, Ho!, Ho!”, I’m sure we heard, or were we only dreaming? As we moved the blinds and looked into the night Snow was falling all around, my sisters’ face was beaming! The sight of snowflakes filled her with delight…..! The stockings on the mantel were filled as if to burst The Christmas tree lights gave a comfy glow We hadn’t opened anything yet, we’d wake our parents first Santa’d been, we’d better let them know…! Up they got, and through they came, “He’s been here right enough!” Our mother said as she wandered through with dad By half-past five we’d opened them all, we’d some amount of stuff And we appreciated all the things we had…..! So to all you parents out there, as your Christmas’s you arrange The generations may have moved along………. And although this story’s quite an old one, the excitement hasn’t changed The joy of Christmas is every bit as strong…. So I hope you have a good one, and Santa makes a call Put the fire out so he’ll make it down your ‘lum’ And for all you kids who read this story, I hope Christmas is a ball….. …..just don’t get up too early, in case he doesn’t come………!

(Do you remember this Janice? x)

“Henry Spurway –

The Legend!” He has been a Hotel Manager, a Justice of the Peace, a Casino Manager, a successful Bookmaker and always a very successful Agent to the Stars, and he has now moved into his new Head Office in the Bathgate Business Centre, Whitburn Road.

For Henry it all started years ago when he bought the Rainbow Rooms Casino in Edinburgh where he experimented with providing entertainment and gambling in the same building. A new concept, and business thrived until the 1968 Gaming Act came into force, banning betting and live entertainment under the same roof. Looking for a new challenge, Henry bought the Elm Tree Inn in Bellsquarry, promoting cabaret, folk acts and comedians such as Bruce Forsyth and Ken Dodd. By 1973 he was managing acts such as Sydney Devine and promoted Billy Connolly’s first tour, 44 dates with an 18 piece big band. Later Henry moved to London, where he worked with Max Clifford promoting a band called “Bilbo Baggins” who appeared on the Top of the Pops TV show.

Henry is always on the lookout to add to his list of performers and if you are

extremely talented musically and perhaps waiting to be discovered, why not send your bi-ogs and demos to:

14

Today, Henry with his management team, Alayne Clark and Jim Mclellan are still very busy and working on several exciting new ventures, including forming the new “boy band” Bilbo Baggins. Having managed the original Bilbo Baggins in the mid 70’s he has decided that now would be a good time to launch the new line-up. He is also writing a book about his “Betfair – Betunfair” experiences but he will save that story for a future edition of UP THE STREET.

Carving out a place in our Scottish heritage Very few people get the opportunity to leave a mark on this world which may last for centuries.

In 1540 James V’s Royal Palace at Stirling was under construction. James made every effort to ensure that the completed ‘Renaissance Palace’ would impress by employing the finest craftsmen and designers, many from Europe, so that the decorative themes would exemplify the most advanced thinking in the Arts Sciences Philosophy and Religion. A major feature was to be the ceiling of the King’s Presence Chamber. Almost forty elaborately carved oak roundels each almost a metre wide and up to 200mm thick were set into the coffered ceiling. The subjects ranged from members of the Stewart Dynasty to figures from classical antiquity with Roman Emperors and the Nine Worthies - even the Court Jester was included. There was and is, nothing like it in the World! In 1777 the Palace was deteriorating and the ceiling was taken down. Painted plaster and fine tapestries, fine furniture and wall decoration gradually all disappeared.

Livingston Carver and Sculptor John Donaldson has spent the last six years on a major project which will give him and two of his children the kind of longevity that will become the stuff of legend.

In June 2011 the new ceiling with copies of the originals hand carved by John Donaldson were the centrepiece of an elaborate reinstatement of the Royal Apartments. Once again the walls of the rooms are plastered and gloriously painted. Splendid tapestries hang in the Queen’s Outer Chamber and beautiful reproductions of her furniture are on display in her Bedchamber. The King’s Bedchamber is a feast of Heraldry with the ceiling adorned with the Royal Arms, surrounded by the four Orders of Chivalry - all carved by John Donaldson. To make such a significant contribution to Scotland’s heritage ensures that, just as the French Master carver of the original roundels, Andrew Mansioun is remembered, so too will he be. An extra bonus for John was the opportunity to use his two daughters as models for the faces of two of the roundels - Thirty seven roundels were required for the ceiling. Thirty four were still in existence in some shape or form, two were to be based on drawings done in 1815, one male, one female (for which John’s younger daughter’s face was used). This left John to design and carve a ‘new’ Roundel to complete the ceiling and so, along with Kings and Queens and Classical Heroes, ‘The Carver’s Daughter’ as the roundel has already become known, takes its place in History. Historic Scotland’s Project to reinstate the Palace also includes extensive interpretive displays and refurbished shops and café. Such an ambitious venture looks set to make a major impact on Scottish Tourism and guarantees Stirling Castle a place in the top ‘must see’ attractions.

Wishing Everyone A Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year

For over thirty years I plied my trade as a DJ in the pubs, clubs and hotels all over Scotland. Many of the places are just “ghosts” now but their legend lives on and the history will remain in wedding albums and videos for years to come. The venues evoke memories at the mention of their names Coop Halls in Jarvey Street, British Leyland Club, Granny Smith’s, The Tower in Craigshill, Golden Circle, Regal in West Calder, the Meadowhead the list goes on. Each one in itself holds an honour role of joy, laughter and tears from the functions that were held there – weddings, 21st, works dances, Northern Soul nights – wasn’t much that couldn’t be celebrated with a good party. As the nights “entertainment” DJ’s were afforded a view of the public that few get to see and I was luckier than most. An avid people watcher I got a front row seat in the biggest show in town and it delivered every time. The bride and groom that fought during their first dance, the bride dressed in black, the death, the murder, the party where only the engaged couple turned up – it was all on show. When it came to music there’s an old saying that was attributed by many to the late Jimmy Saville – “there’s no such thing as bad music, just different taste”. However some people managed to push the boundaries – first dance Pyschodelic

Furs and Pretty in Pink and just what do you play when half the bridal party are deaf? How many times did I play Claptons’ Wonderful Tonight or Lady in Red, and the Power of Love? Then you get the entertainers big challenge - Edinburghers vs Weegies as audiences. There’s an easy way to outline the differences. The East want to be entertained and the West consider entertainment to be a full body contact event. Let’s have a hypothetical situation (unless you recognise it). A mixed marriage bride from the West, groom from the East. I discuss the details of the wedding party with the best man and he gives me some additional ones – no singers, no party dances, all very formal. No sooner does he leave the stage and a representative from the West brings the list of singers. East meets West in discussions and its agreed there will be singers and party dances. Within five dances the East have the wedding hats and suit jackets off and we have a real party.

So as you go about your daily business and possibly pass one of these “ghost” sites pause, remember and smile – then go home and tell the stories so that they can live on.

BUSINESS TO BUSINESS SERVICES - PROMOTING LOCAL TRADE AND NETWORKING

Introducing a new FREE service from the team at

‘UP THE STREET’ As UP THE STREET has developed over the last two years we have built up a considerable knowledge of the businesses and resources in the your area.

Let us direct you to the service you’re looking for ... We will search our advertisers or within the local area for any service you require.

Local

Product & Service Sourcing

I can’t thank Alayne at ‘Up the Street’ enough for helping us in our time of need. At the last minute we could not source a local printer to print our presentation hand-outs for an important event happening the following day. I called Alayne to see if she knew of any-one locally who could help. Alayne not only found us a printing service within the hour, she contacted them, negotiated on our behalf and arranged for them to work late to complete our job request on time. We successfully received our literature in ‘record’ time; the quality finish was excellent, and my presentation was well received by the delegates. This is all thanks to Alayne from ‘Up the Street’, who we will use time and time again and highly recommend. Beverley Anderson - Director Profitable Creative Marketing

Renewable Energy The Decision Heats Up Positive action is being taken in Scotland to shift the way our country resources its energy use. With rising fuel costs and pressure to reduce carbon emissions, there is no doubt that we need to harness the benefits of our natural resources if we are to secure stability in long term energy supplies. While the political focus may be on large scale infrastructure investment, it is possible for individuals, small businesses and community groups to take control of their own energy requirements and play their part in a way that contributes to the environment and makes long-term financial sense. Feed in Tariffs and the Renewable Heat Incentive have created an opportunity for renewable energy. However, too much over active sales initiatives can create confusion for those wishing to invest and there can be the impression that some products could solve all energy concerns and produce immediate large cash returns. This detracts from the initial cost, the reality of energy usage and the fact that the renewable investment should be viewed in conjunction with a property’s running cost. Before installing renewable technology it is very important to consider all available technologies and understand how they can make the biggest difference. Generous incentives for Solar PV, for example, have meant that other technologies have been over looked in favour of a regular income. The proposed changes to these incentives still allow for returns of up to 10% for the right properties.

Small-scale wind turbines also qualify for the Feed-in Tariff and the muchanticipated Renewable Heat Incentive is expected to set a similar scheme for heat generating technologies such as Solar Thermal, Air Source Heat Pumps and Biomass Boilers.

In most cases there is a solution that fits your property or community and more importantly the way you use energy. A renewable energy company such as EnergyMyWay will be able to survey your property and give you the best advice without the hype, as well as providing the accredited installations that guarantee your eligibility for any available subsidies.
