Dancing Genie-us! Brendan Cole spills the beans about his starring role in this year’s panto, Aladdin.

8 | ATGTICKETS.COM

FROM DECEMBER 2019

How did you get into panto? I actually did my very first panto on my first year of Strictly back in 2004. Back then it didn’t run up to Christmas so I was able to do it and I loved it. If you’re a performer and you’re on stage it’s a privilege to be there, I’m really looking forward to it. What are you most looking forward to about spending Christmas in Woking? Woking is a lovely place, I’ve been here many times. It’s a great place to come and it’s a wonderful theatre to perform in; for such a big venue it feels very intimate. How do you cope with a demanding panto schedule and what’s your favourite way to relax during the panto run? I just enjoy my time with the company. The place will be flooded with performers and crew and musicians so it’s about spending time with them, hanging out socially after the show. If you have a good time off the stage, you have a good time on the stage, and it shows. Do you have any pre-show rituals? None whatsoever. I tend to leave it until the last minute, I don’t like getting ready early because if I do I start to get pacey; I tend to get ready very shortly before I need to be on stage so I don’t have to think too much about it. Did you grow up watching pantomimes? Do you remember your first one? I was actually in one before I ever saw one! They don’t have them in New Zealand as far as I know, so I never grew up watching them.

FROM DECEMBER 2019

What is the secret to a great pantomime? The secret is the camaraderie you have on stage with the people you’re working with. The more you gel, the more fun you have, and the audience picks up on that and has an even better time. How does panto compare to life on Strictly? Strictly is a panto! It’s virtually the same. It’s fun to be a part of, the audience loves it but it’s very similar. We’re there to have a great time and to entertain audiences of all ages, just like we will in Aladdin. You’re touring your new tour, Show Man, in 2020; are you excited about it? I’m very excited. It’s the second run of the tour and it’s my last Big Band tour, so I’m really excited. I love being on the road and being on stage and when you’ve got your own show and it’s got your name on it, you want it to be the absolute best – you want to go out there and be proud of it. Are you looking forward to starring alongside Bobby, Mischa, David and Dawson? Very much so. I’ve known Bobby for years so we’re already good friends; he’s ridiculously funny so we’ll have some fun, and I’m excited to be working with the rest of the company and getting to know them all. You have starred in various pantomimes, what do you like most about them? I love the way they develop and progress, from opening night to closing night. The script is the same, but the way things happen and develop means you can be really creative in the telling of the show, playing it differently and trying different things while still delivering a wonderful show.

The Magic of Ghost Stories We chat to the talented Andy Nyman about his phenomenally successful supernatural stage play that’s broken box office records in theatres across the world. Ghost Stories is one of the most original and exciting stage plays of the century. Without giving too much away can you tell us a little about it? I’m sorry (laughs) but I won’t. Giving too much away spoils the anticipation and we want people to experience a good scare and a laugh – it’s full of surprises. The stage play asks audiences to keep its secret. Now it’s been turned into a film can theatre audiences still be surprised? Nothing is spoiled if you’ve seen the film. Although the story is loosely similar, the stage version is full of suspense with an incredible set and sound. Audiences will leave feeling thrilled. What is it about the subject matter of Ghost Stories that compels audiences? A rattling good story. One that has meaning and impact. And it also contains a lot of truth. What was your inspiration for the story? I’ve known co-creator, Jeremy Dyson since we were 15 and we both love horror stories. I thought it’d be great to work with him so when I had the idea we pitched it and a date was set for an initial six week run. We didn’t dream it would go all over the world and we pinch ourselves at its success. I think this tour is the ultimate version of the play and everyone who comes to see it will have a ball.

14 | ATGTICKETS.COM

Who is your favourite character in Ghost Stories and why? Professor Goodman, the parapsychologist. He’s a mix of me and Professor Richard Wiseman. I’ve known him for 30 years and he’s an extraordinary and interesting man. We spoke to him very early on in the writing process and gained some fascinating insights. The science on display is actual fact. If it wasn’t presented in a play, the things he says would be a valid talk at a TED Conference. What do you think lies within the human psyche that likes to be drawn into (and believe in) the ‘unknown’? Fear of the unknown is instinctive – it’s rooted in the need to survive. If we see a shape with a face in the darkness we flee because it might be a predator. There’s no downside to that fight or flight response to the unknown. We live with fears every day but we rarely get a really good scare. That’s why we like rollercoasters and horror films – it’s getting that adrenaline rush in a safe environment. When it comes to ghosts or the supernatural, are you a sceptic? Yes – but I think of myself as a spiritual person. Interview by Kerry Walker

9 TO 5? More like 5, 6, 7, 8! With 9 to 5 The Musical movin’ and shakin’ its way into theatres, we decided to give our TheatreCard Members the chance to dance like Dolly at our latest exclusive event at The Palace Theatre, Manchester. The evening started with a toe-tappin’, hip-bumpin’ workshop led by the musical’s own dance captain, Sierra Brewerton. Members spent 45 minutes learning a dance from the show, with expert instruction and plenty of exciting choreography! Members who felt more comfortable in a cosy theatre seat than up on their feet were also able to enjoy the class. A mum who decided to spectate said: ‘I’m watching my daughter up on stage, she’s doing really well. It looks really good fun. As a parent, I’m really proud!’ After all that two-steppin’, complimentary refreshments were provided in the bar... in the form of a signature ‘Cup of Ambition’ cocktail of course! Members were able to kick back, relax and socialise before sitting down to enjoy the evening performance. Everyone had a fantastic time, both at the dance class and the musical itself. They loved being able to perform a routine from the actual show, which they watched back later – this time performed by the cast as part of the storyline.

‘We very much appreciated all your help throughout the event; my daughter Taylor was in her element. We’d like to extend our best wishes to Sierra, who was brilliant throughout. Please also send a message to the cast of the show, who were tremendous. It was a great show – everyone was amazing – and we’ll be telling everyone to go and watch it!’ Not a Member yet? A Perfect Match We catch up with Daniel Healy who plays ‘Guy’ and Emma Lucia who stars as ‘Girl’ in the 2020 UK tour of Once. Daniel, do you remember the first time you played the role of Guy? I got to play ‘Guy’ in the West End, so that was a special night. My parents came and all the friends who could be there. I remember giving it absolutely everything as I thought it would be my last time playing the role. How wrong I was! I’m just so blessed to be able to tell such a beautiful story. Why do you think Once resonates with audiences? D: Glen Hansard’s music is timeless, Enda Walsh’s script is perfect and the story is conveyed by a stellar cast. We have all had that once-in-a-lifetime moment when we’ve met someone who turned on the light in our eyes and reminded us of our true selves. Did we fall in love and sail into the sunset? Did we let it fall away due to outside circumstances or timing? Was it only for that moment? You’ll have some questions for yourself after you see the show. I think that’s why people love it. What do you think, Emma? It’s a story of love and friendship that isn’t romanticised. Often in theatre, decisions are tailored to ensure that the piece ends ‘happily ever after’ which isn’t always how life is. Once is truthful and bare, with the most heart-wrenching music you’ll ever hear. Tell us a bit about Girl. What’s she like? E: ‘Girl’ is a beautiful example of someone who’s experienced a huge amount of pain, but refuses to let it taint her outlook on life. She quite literally laughs in the face of cynicism and is constantly trying to uplift and inspire others. Daniel, you’ve co-written songs with Ronan Keating, who you met through Once. How was that? Ronan is someone I consider a great friend. We met on Once and I’ve played in his

18 | ATGTICKETS.COM

touring band for the last four years. I wrote six songs on his last album ‘Time of My Life’. It was an amazing experience that’s opened up a lot of doors for me. I signed a publishing deal with Concord Publishing and have since worked with artists and production houses all over the world. Emma, you play the piano on stage – is that an added challenge? One of the unique aspects of Once is that the music is played live by the actors. I’ve been playing the piano since I was seven years old and it’s always been a kind of outlet for me – so to combine the two is really special. There are so many different instruments in the show, especially for the swings who cover several parts, so the challenge comes with playing everything live. Daniel, are you excited to head out on tour? I’ve toured with the band but I’ve never toured with a theatre show before, I can’t wait! Emma, what’s your favourite part of the show to perform? I love ‘Falling Slowly’ because it’s the moment Guy and Girl connect with each other. I also love when the whole company perform ‘When Your Mind’s Made Up’ for the first time. Both scenes give me goosebumps every time! Why should people come and see it? E: Once really is the most relatable musical I have ever come across. When I did the show last year, so many of my friends and family came to watch – from my 80-year-old granny who loves crosswords and classical music to my 17-year-old brother who generally dislikes theatre and only listens to heavy metal... Everyone loved it. Once isn’t just a big emotional love story. It’s also hilarious. For a night out at the theatre it has everything you could ever ask for. Great music, laughter and a beautiful story that everyone can relate to.

‘ONE OF THE BEST MUSICALS EVER WRITTEN.’ S U N DAY T I M E S

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.

Lyn Paul returns for her last ever tour as Mrs Johnstone, which she first made her own in London’s West End. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End. It has been affectionately christened the ‘STANDING OVATION MUSICAL’, as inevitably it ‘BRINGS THE AUDIENCE CHEERING TO ITS FEET AND ROARING ITS APPROVAL’ – The Daily Mail. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.
